How are you ranked ahead of Northwestern?

I have a great idea, ND needs a 13th game every year at the end of the season to help their chances at making the playoff. Why don't you call your AD and good old Pat F. See if they can set it up for 2016 and beyond. Only problem is 9 times out of 10 you will be hovering around .500 so don't think it will do much to help ND's cause.
Or we could just beat you like the last 2 times we played which would pretty much kill your chances.

Do you sit at home in mom's basement staring at your glory shrine of the big Northwestern victory over Notre Dame? In the world full of few big victories that you reside I'm sure it's nice to have one meaningful accomplishment to cherish with such glee. What's scary is you probably watched both games in said basement. And they are what 20 years apart? Congratulations.

You're going with quality of loss? I like quality of wins. Your best win 8-4 USC or 10-2 Temple. Our best win 10-2 Stanford.

We're ahead of UM because they lost 3 times while we lost 2 times. 10-2 is better than 9-3.
It's not quality loss - it is how well each team played. ND got jumped by three teams after winning a game against BC because score matters. If you think getting the shat kicked out of you by big boys doesn't matter then go back to preschool where everyone is a winner.

Looking at overall resumes, ND's is better despite the one common opponent. NW got blown out twice, whereas we lost by 2 on the road twice, to top 10 teams.

We beat you last year.
We beat Stanford this year and completely dominated them
Your best wins are Navy, USC, and Temple.
We play in the best conference in the country.
You lose to Stanford.
We have the same record.

Isn't the team that beat Stanford better than the team that lost to Stanford?

The fact that you think last year's results would matter at all in a discussion of this year's rankings is a very good indicator of your intelligence level.

Yes, same argument lots have made on here, but margin of victory/defeat isn't supposed to be in the committees decision.

Stanford actually got in Thursday so they could adjust to the time difference. They weren't in school yet so this could happen without an issue with their academics. Any more stuff you just want to make up?

Wrong. Florida couldn't score on Vanderbilt. You think they'd handle the #1 scoring defense in the country? Any more stuff you'd like to make up?

Oh ok. If you say ND and Stanford is better, than they must be. Let's not go off of results on the field. Let's just say Notre Dame is better. My argument is we beat Stanford, you lost to Stanford. Your argument (and everyone on the board) is Notre Dame is better because no reason other than we are and the committee says so.
Must we go back to the 'Texas beat OU' or would you rather go to 'Ole Miss beat Bama'? Should Texas be ranked ahead of OU for winning? Should Ole Miss be ahead of Bama? If you say 'no' to either one of those then how do you say 'yes' to common opponent? I will say that NU should be below UM - who solidly beat the daylights out of NU - should be ranked higher. Go ask yourself why your team is ahead of a team that stomped the daylights out of you and quit acting like beating Eastern Illinois means something.

The committee does use style points. They use something they call "game control," which is basically the same thing.

No because OU has a better record. Common opponent is only a tie breaker when the records are the same.

Should Ole Miss be ahead of Bama?
No see above.

Because record matters more than common opponents.

NU (btw thanks for saying NU not NW. I appreciate it) has a better record than Michigan so we should be above them. Michigan has a great win over Northwestern and are a very good 3 loss team like Ole Miss who has a great win over Alabama. So I would put those two teams as the best 3 loss teams.

and quit acting like beating Eastern Illinois means something.

I only said Eastern Illinois gives us less SOS points than Umass because Umass is FBS, but Notre Dame should not get any points for beating UMass because that victory is meaningless as EIU and they're the equivalent of an FCS team.

WHY THE FK DOES IT MATTER WHERE EITHER SCHOOL IS RANKED??????????????? Is there a frigging cash reward? Nobody's season is affected one iota. NU would be 4th out of the Big However Many in either scenario

I would love for ND to get you guys in a bowl game this year and embarrass y'all to the high heavens. Not going to happen but getting Iowa is a possibility and beating them will take care of this ignorant argument.

Oh, I see, you get to make the rules as you go along. Now the rule is common opponents matter if their record is the same. Head-to-head does not matter if the losing team has a better record. And, last year matters but only because...well, because...it just should.

I finally figured this out - YOU ARE THE DR. PEPPER GUY FROM THE COMMERCIALS!!!

Please elaborate on what this measure is.

Jeff Long has referred to it many times when he's been interviewed. It's basically their way of using style points, without calling it style points.

Personally, I don't like that they use that. To me, a win is a win, period. But they do use it.

I've been saying that record matters for the entire thread. Obviously, record matters.

The Northwestern kid is just looking for validation of his team. He's too dumb realize that there's a reason why Northwestern is ranked behind ND. As I stated earlier, it's because those on the committee (and those not Northwestern/Big Ten fans) not only think ND is a better team, but also regard Northwestern's victory over Stanford in the first game of the season as a fluke. His whining and moaning is nothing more than the typical Northwestern inferiority complex. I love how it eats away at him.

So you're better because you say so. Cool beans Hansel.

We beat Stanford but it doesn't count because it was a fluke. How many of our other 9 wins were flukes? Can I say our 2 losses were flukes? Was it a fluke that Stanford beat you? How about when we beat you last year? How does this make up fluke thing work?

We played the game. We won. I don't need validation. I saw it on the field. The NU defensive front dominated that game. That's no fluke. I'm just wondering if anyone around here is willing to man up and say, "You beat Stanford, we didn't. Yes, you should be ranked higher."

Are you mentally retarded? Did you finish eighth grade?

Let me spell this out one more time: ND is ranked ahead of Northwestern NOT because I say so. BUT OBVIOUSLY THE PLAYOFF COMMITTEE THINKS SO!!! And that's all that matters. So you can whine and cry until you're blue in the face, but it won't make one bit of difference.

Oh, right, you don't need validation of your team but then come up with this gem: "just wondering if anyone around here is willing to man up and say, "You beat Stanford, we didn't. Yes, you should be ranked higher." Um, that's looking for validation, half-wit. And nobody here (nor on the playoff committee) is foolish enough to say that because clearly you shouldn't be. You can think that Northwestern should be in the top ten, but what you think doesn't amount to a hill of beans. Get it now?

Wow. More attacks on me. No, I'm not mentally retarded. I have a degree from Northwestern. I did also complete 8th grade.

Yes, the playoff committee says that Notre Dame is ranked higher which makes no sense because based on the Stanford game that you lost and we won, we're the better team. Sadly, my opinion doesn't matter because I'm not on the committee. I'm also not in Congress, so my opinion on Congressional legislation doesn't matter. Do I not get an opinion? I do and if you don't like that then you can get out of America.

I don't need you to say that Northwestern is the better team for my validation of the team. I've seen them all year. I want you to say it to validate your own fan base as smart intelligent fans instead of people that follow their team blindly like sheep. Michigan State is a better team than Northwestern this year. If they lose to Iowa and are 11-2, they'll still be better because Michigan State beat Michigan and Northwestern lost to Michigan. I have no problem saying that.

The problem Northwestern and all other BIG teams in the western division have is that their division is, hands down, the worst division in any of the Power5 conferences. That is why Iowa was the last unbeaten added to the top 4. I hope that helps you figure out the answer to your original question.
The Big 10 West, The ACC Coastal and the SEC East are all pretty weak divisions. Much weaker than their conference opposites.

It doesn't matter what anyone here says, it's what the committee says. Maybe they have a message board or a chat room where you could argue with them over why they think ND is better.

Yeah, the ACC is the worst. Clemson is the only good team in the whole league. The SEC East is terrible too. I mean Florida is the winner of that division.
Not true. The BIG West is by far the worst division of any power five conference. Again, the committee made that clear in their rankings. Argue with them. ND has three wins over top 25 teams. How many does Northwestern have?

1. I know it's totally embarrassing for Nebraska, Minnesota and Illinois. I love it.
2. I hope you see Wisky in the pinstripe bowl or something. They'll surprise you.
3. Harbaugh didn't call of the dogs. Does it really seem like a Harbaugh thing to do to call off the dogs? I mean he did take a knee at the end of the game, but that was it. They were blitzing all day. Northwestern is a front runner. We don't play from behind very well. When we got behind against Iowa and Michigan, we had to pass the ball, run a 2 minute offense and it was disaster. Not making excuses, we lost the game. Would it have been better to play a ball control offense and limit the damage rather than trying to win? We tried to win, and it spiraled out of control
4. Weather, time of day, and timing of win are the reasons you're a head of us. Doesn't sound like that's in the committees mandate. Record, championships won, strength of schedule, head to head. Not time of win, time of day or weather excuses.

I'm just telling you the facts. You can choose to ignore them all you want.

The holes in your argument would make you lots of dollars on the street corner though

I want you to say it to validate your own fan base as smart intelligent fans instead of people that follow their team blindly like sheep. .

Now this is just pathetic. Please consult your phone directory for the number of a psychiatrist. Wow, just wow.

OMG, that one really made me laugh. I do love watching the Big ten getting creamed almost every bowl season because of comments like that one.

I'm not flaming. I'm asking a legitimate question about Notre Dame football. How is it possible that you're ahead of Northwestern when the common opponent test implicates that Northwestern is a better team.
Did you go to the scUM board and ask why Meatchicken is ranked ahead of Utah? I bet you didn't. Move along troll.

Northwestern what? Usually the little directional schools have state names to identify themselves.

This Northwestern Dude is being beaten like a Red Headed step child on here - funny how stupid he is to keep coming back for more.

Is that your boyfriend? Don't worry you secret is safe.

I like how the overbite folks are all willing to hunch down to fit the little fella in the picture. I also like how he confidently claims to be #93. Let me guess, he took the field right after posing for pix with his fans.
