1) 4-1 start at a minimum.
(A huge home win vs Georgia would go a long way).
2) 9-3 or better record. Not asking for the world but with the 2018 schedule being the toughest in years and years. You need great momentum.
3) Great excitement/ Recruiting for 2018
4) Being the tougher team- week in and week out.
5) No in game mistakes from Kelly- two point sheet stuff. Etc etc.
Basically, great physicality and relentless effort by the players and coaching staff.

I'd like to add no pre game mistakes by Kelly also. When winning the coin toss, I'd like to see him do what 90% of coaches do, excluding Weis, and that is defer to the second half (Except against Navy).
I also prefer 5-0 start and finish undefeated.
Looking over the roster (w/o rose colored glasses on), the composition of this team, on either side of the ball, is just not a 'physical' team; nor have the defensive or offensive schemes over the recent season emphasized 'physical' football. Teams cannot suddenly become something they are not.
On the whole roster the only players who are thought to be 'physical' by disposition and instinct are Nelson and Morgan. A few of the newer DB's come in with reputations for being physical but even those guys are not really 'big' guys and the question becomes would they hold up for during the course of the season.
Expecting something that probably is just not part of the team makeup is heading for disappointment. And, so far, career wise, Kelly's teams have never been 'physicsl'. So if you want that: wrong guy is your H.C.! (but we are sure of that already!)
But the team can still learn to 'pursue' the play in an aggresive style. That would be a great improvement.

Defense sounds kind of like the 2012 defense at this time of year. I believe that defense had six new starters.
And they had TE'O
And they had Tuitt
And they had Smith
And they had KLM
you got 4 like that?
You can't really count Smith going into 2012. He was a freshman who we thought would be good, but you never know.

I wanted Kelly gone this year but since I found out he was staying and they got Elko I am very excited about the Irish in 17. ---I2 and 0 baby !! Zorich...I don't hate Kelly, nor do I consider myself anti Kelly. That said, I believe Kelly deserved to be fired for his inexplicable support for BVG, and the disastrous impact this had on the program. He put friendship before the best interest of the program, and should have been fired for this. He wasn't, and after the disaster that was last season, he has acted like a man on a mission to salvage the program and his reputation, and I like literally every move he has made. Despite believing he should have been fired, I want Kelly to be successful, as this equates to ND being successful. That's not drinking koolaid; it's being a realist in accepting he is the HC, and it's being a ND fan in supporting the team and objectively reacting to the many changes he has made this offseason, and acknowledging that he has addressed nearly every shortcoming that has been debated here endlessly for the past few years. Kelly will rightfully deserve credit if we have a 10 win season and we see significant improvement in overall team performance, and he will rightfully deserve criticism and being fired if we don't see marked improvement across the board, including his in game decision making. The vast majority of Kool aid drinkers here, as you refer to them, will be calling for his firing if we see poor team performance; but the question is will you and Perse etc al acknowledge his leadership and HC abilities if we have a successful season?
First of all, you will have to define what a successful season is, for a coach that is nearing a decade at a school and has yet to win a major bowl game.
Since we're discussing whether you would come on here and acknowledge Kelly and give him credit, it's more appropriate for you to define this.
This is how it all begins. People forget how bad a job this coach has done outside one or if you want two good regular season. Kelly will get this team to 9 wins and then you'll hear, but we are on the right track, blah blah blah. Fast forward a couple years and the team is sitting at 5-7 and arguing about going to a bowl game.
If anyone has any evidence that this teams only hope of even sniffing 9 wins this year, is to have Wimbush or Book turn out to be a stud then you're kidding yourself. I guess maybe the new SC coach and position coaches will turn out to be the right fit and a couple DE's emerge, but it's not something I'd bet on.

You say he has never won a big game but how many of these top coaches can say they went to a National Championship and possibly 2 more if it weren't for close losses to tough teams. FSU loss, Clemson loss, Stanford loss which i believe were all on the road at night. Kelly has not been perfect but it is not easy to win at ND with all the restrictions. He made some bad hires with some people but it seems that he has made the change and it looks like he made some good hires. He is not a bad coach. JS sees that and that is why Kelly was retained. I am not saying he is Saban or Meyer but those are 2 of the best coaches of all time you are trying to compare him to.

And so the Irish went 4-8. BK and his staff did a bad coaching job. Things may or may not get better. What are any of you going to do about it? Not much, other than start threads on various message boards and post talking points day after day about the same thing. You guys are powerless no matter what. There is nothing any of us can do about any of this, so, naturally, the next best thing is to attack fans who are willing to support the kids and new staff. Attacking BK didn't work. Attacking Jack and Jenkins didn't work. "Letter writing" campaigns had no shot. Having friends in high places is nothing more than your fantasy. Bk has been attacked on all fronts, from the ridiculous to the factual. He's still standing. What is all this daily crying and bitching to other strangers sitting behind a keyboard supposed to accomplish? This is so idiotic that one of "yours" swore off posting here and watching any games in 2017 in protest, only, he was quickly back under a new name after realizing none of his family and friends wanted to hear about it anymore either. Perse I'm glad you didn't start off with fire Kelly and for the record I agree with your statement. What I am hoping for is a couple breaks here and there we go undefeated and make the playoffs. I'd like to think I'm a realist and with our location, admin, acedemic, and campus rigors it's tough for ND to be contending year in and out. I'll accept 9 win seasons with a title run 1 out of 5 years. Heck I'll settle for 1 out of 10 year if I knew we would win one.

You made my point when you said 'IF' it weren't for close losses. A big time coach would not have an 'if' in that sentence. Big coaches win big games. Kelly has coached in some big important games for ND. You named them in your post. However, the outcome is always the same.
lets's face it Bodi's 12-0 prediction is just 'tradition'; if he really believed that they should take away his right to operate machinery, handle sharp objects, vote, be in public unescorted...and interact with general society.
