Rebuilding is a thing of the past with the quality of the last few recruiting classes and the quality of the Coaching staff.
This year is a very manageable schedule for the Irish with the tougher opponents being at home.

I think the real reason I am so optimistic this year is the quarterback situation with all the talent and experience and Coach Kelly, Denbrock, and Sanford having their backs. The Irish have plenty of playmakers on offense and a potentially great Oline to make the QB's job easier.
I also like the depth and experience on the Dline with seniors Isaac Rochelle and Jarron Jones leading the way.

*** I apologize to the board for all my fighting with other posters (I am going to cut that down)

*** This board has a lot of knowlegable football fans and I would rather read their posts and not get caught up in all the trash talking.
Spring football is here and all is well.

*** We may get to the playoffs this year---We need to get the positive vibes going !

Go Irish !!
Beat Texas!!

One of the fundamental changes between this regime and the previous three is that we are now redshirting kids as part of roster management versus redshirting kids because they are not ready to play at this level. We are too used to lamenting every great kid we have that moves on because we were trained by experience to believe we will obviously take a step back at that position. But starting with the 2012 defense which had five or six new starters, we need to now understand that we have a lot of depth in our program, and we have kids to step in and do the job, even if it's a kid you've never heard of or never seen play. It certainly won't always work out, but there's reason to be optimistic and excited to see the new kids get their chance each year.

Huh? Isn't the excuse as to why our defense has stunk for 2 years that we had injuries?

Please note that '14 was the worst ppg against us in school history.

'15 was the 5th worst in school history. That made the last 2 years the worst back to back season's ever.

If we have depth then something's not working....

I think what he is trying to say is that when you can red shirt guys for 2-3 years and play them when they're ready you won't see much of a drop off. Injuries forced many guys into action before they were ready: Morgan, Cage, Blakenship, Trumbetti, Hayes. These guys all played as freshman when none (maybe Cage) would have and none were physically ready. Ideally would have been red shirted and 2-3 years waiting for your time doesn't mean you aren't the real deal, just developing in the system along as physically.

Thanks for the feedback. The issue is we are heading into year 7 and I haven't seen depth being a strength at all on D.

imo The complex scheme is the biggest problem, not talent.

When you couple the arguably best coach in CFB with the most storied program in the sport and then look at the promise of an NFL future or/and one of the nations finest degrees you can bet that ND will be in a reloading period for years to come. Great stuff, Go Irish!

You said ND was going to the playoffs last year too. I fear for some people in here. Y'all might jump off bridges because you don't get how far off ND is from the elite teams.

Injuries didn't cost ND the Northwestern, Clemson and Stanford games. The idiot head coach and his mismanagement did.

Your delusional thoughts are entertaining at least. Best coach? Lmfao!!!!!!!!!! Yea, he's so much better, light years better, than Meyer and Saban. What a clown.

There is no question ND doesn't have the depth on defense that they do on offense. But quality depth is built on offense and beginning to on defense. When you lose your starting QB/RB/TE for the season and their back-ups for the season and can still make a fiesta bowl run and compete with the best teams in the nation (Clemson/Stanford) I think you can say this program is farther along than it has been in a long time. I only mentioned three positions of offense, the injury thing has been well documented, it is not an excuse but rather a testament that ND could still compete with the best in the nation with their 2nd and 3rd string guys.

Too many clowns and nowhere to hide them. What a shame to hate something so good.

Imagine what a sad exsistence a guy like cgvr must have.

Fair points, but don't discount the competitive games against lesser competition. The inconsistency of our on field performance is baffling. We can look like world beaters then poof it's gone. imo oklahoma, fsu and Texas were the best games of kelly's tenure. (Stanford '12 as excellent too.) Every time I think we've arrived we regress. I'm glad Lyght is in there to throw blocks for the secondary. I'm sure he'll be vocal against things that are over the athletes heads....

Your a nitwit. Go away. Stop embarrassing yourself.

Yep, we have shown that at times we can be competitive in big games.

On a similar note, I don't know the full roster shift for Clemson, but they also were missing key players (Isaiah Battle supplemental draft, DJ Reader personal, Korrin Wiggins injury, Mike Williams injury).

In additon, they had 5 guys drafted into the NFL including 2 first rounders and still made the NC game.
2015 1 8 Vic Beasley LB Atlanta Falcons
2015 1 31 Stephone Anthony LB New Orleans Saints
2015 5 137 Grady Jarrett DT Atlanta Falcons
2015 5 165 Bradley Pinion P San Francisco 49ers
2015 6 188 Tony Steward LB Buffalo Bills

My point being that every year teams loses players to injuries, defections, the draft....

Our defense is a train wreck and we lost a ton of experience there. On O we've lost approx 2/3 of our receiving production. Losing Prosise in the rushing game hurts too. Kizer had a phenomenal year completing almost 63% of his passes. His 21 TD to 10 int and 150.1 QB rating are solid. He's also pretty stout running with the ball. I'm hoping Sanders has a full and quick recovery. He's a play maker. The O line has to remain intact. McGlinchey has always stood out to me. He plays the game with bad intentions.... I don't see us being further along at all. Texas is a huge statement game and imo we'll know better by the end of the first half where we're at.
