Chris Ash DC

Doesn't it feel kind of crummy that PSU got Knowles (the guy who lead the #1 defense in the country last year in defensive F+ and just won a national championship) and we got Chris Ash?

Besides that point I think im noticing a trend in Freeman's coordinator hires: He seems to like SUPER EXPERIENCED coordinators who have coached a lot of football in various roles at various levels and have shown they can climb to the top of the profession.

Al Golden
Mike Denbrock
Chris Ash

(his last 3 coordinator hires) all seem to have some combination of those qualities.

Hope this isn't another BVG situation. Ash's resume is not that great of late, but in the end I trust Marcus. If we get Ash and lose Mickens I will be pissed. But, what do I know!

Denbrock is overrated.

NDs offense in OF+ was 6th in 2024 with a bunch of 3 & 4 star talent. One of the best offenses at Notre Dame since 2015 lol

Seems like another Al Golden type mature failed as a head coach been in the NFL won a championship at Ohio State so knows what he is doing safe hire high floor low ceiling. I think Penn State overpaid by alot.

There's no such thing as over paying in college football.

Whatever the talent is making now is going to be twice as expensive in another 5 years.

The cost of talent is way below the speed at which revenues are growing.

In relation to how wealthy these organizations at the top of basketball and football in college are, college coaches and players (the talent) are basically playing for the equivalent of a 6 pak of beer. The entire system still way favors the universities. And ND is STILL seemingly penny pinching.

Ohio States Jim Knowls made 2.2 million Brian Hartline 1.6 million. Mike Denbrock 2.1 million Al Golden 2 million..

This is not how you respond when losing in a NC game … this is how you prevent yourself from getting to one before the season starts
One would think that with all your vast football knowledge and expertise you would have found a way to parlay that into a high paying coaching or player personnel position SOMEWHERE....How has everyone everywhere missed the boat ?

Are you implying you like this hire? Or just too scared to admit it’s a terrible hire?

Ash was not on anyone’s list as a potential good hire, for obvious reasons. He is/was in a massive downward trajectory. From power 4 head coach to scout in 4-5 years.

Did you call Pete Bevacqua and voice interest in the Notre Dame DC job?

Or concern about the direction the hiring process is going?

And are you suggesting that the lack of talent in the LV Raider defensive backfield is due to Ash? Do you think anyone could have made that an average backfield?

For the sake of ND football current trajectory, lets all hope this isn't a done deal and there's better candidates still in play.

As usual, one of the worst posters on here, only tells the partial truth. When the head coach is fired, the new coach brings in his own people which happened three times with Chris Ash. It was pathetic enough hearing him tear down Gray who did not lose the OSU game for us, but I guess some have to tear down players to try to justify themselves.

I thought the same thing. Did his head coach get canned and he was part of the house cleaning.

Some BVG or Corwin Brown-Jon Tenuta feels on this one.
It seems we can do better and this seems like a Freeman-OSU connection to Ash so I hope he is doing more searching than just looking at Ash. I also don't like the fact they share the same agent. If he hires Ash, then I will give him some benefit of the doubt because as other coaches have said, Freeman looks for a culture fit as well as a coaching fit. Ash seems to have more risks than some of the other possible candidates.

Golden is the most responsible for the game plan. He had 11 days to try and fix the run d that PSU exposed, and didn't. He made terrible calls during the game. But it's also true that Bowen and more so Gray had bad games and were responsible for game changing plays. It happened, it's on film, you can't hide from it. It's part of the game. There's reasons why teams win and lose, we lost, and we talk about reasons why we lost and also why it was almost a great game/comeback.

Ash was the head coach at rutgers and he got fired

Ash had a terrible defense at texas and that was a big reason the HC at texas got fired

Ash had a terrible secondary with the raiders, that's why he was let go.

Results matter, his have been terrible the last 8 years

Right. Don't trust Marcus Freeman, the coach who led this team to a 14-2 record and a birth in the NC game. Trust this poster, who knows way more about football than Marcus Freeman.

Lets see - Everyone and I mean everyone knew and said hiring Parker was a disaster hire as our OC. Guess what, everyone was right and freeman was wrong, and it crushed what could have been a really good year.

Freeman went and made a very good OC hire and we had a great year

Now, everyone knows ASH would be a terrible hire, lets hope history doesn't repeat itself. This isn't a me take, the only people that think this is a good hire just want to believe, or have to say "trust freeman" despite EVERYTHING saying this is a bad hire.

14-2 this season. Three playoff wins. A trip to the NC game. You do nothing but bitch.

was he in Freeman’s wedding party?

Since you know so much about how to coach defense, Call Pete Bevacqua today.

I wanted Mike MIckens! But I guess it's Chris Ash. Who I vaguely remember as a very unsuccessful HC at Rutgers.
This idea that Mickens should be the guy has no actual merit. Just because someone is a good positional coach, does not mean they’re equipped to scheme an entire defense.

Al Golden was fired from Miami so I’m sure you weren’t pumped at that hire either. Nobody on this board knows if this is a good or bad hire yet.

I’d say we should trust Freeman and see how things play out this season before having rash opinions that this is a terrible hire.

I thought Mickens would be the next DC. But obviously Freeman didn't make that move for a reason. Ditto on trusting Freeman. I imagine Ash is hungry and motivated for this opportunity. Like Golden, I could see Ash revitalizing his career. Excited to see what this guy can do!

Ad nauseum as you say........posting the same thing 40 or 50 times is just bizarre

Ash also has worked closely in co-coordinator roles with Aranda at Wisconsin and Fickell at OSU. So once again, hes been around some dudes that know football. I think the Ash hiring is more complimentary and an attempt to have continuance, as opposed to a complete overhaul. This might be why we're not seeing a splashy Knowles type of hire. After all, this defense doesn't need to have a lot of changes.
