CFP Rankings

I think it’s unfortunate that the playoffs are getting expanded, especially so soon. 12 seems to create a good amount of drama. Only Oregon really feels safe right now and I like that. You have some good teams that will be left out and are sweating right now. A 9-1 #1 or #2 team can probably lose their last two and not worry too much about making it with 16 teams. Boring.

There are around 25 fan bases that are gonna watch every week for the next month like it's do or die because it is. Sign me up for that.

Well stated.

When the final top 12 are picked, I wonder if there will be any 3 loss teams on it?

There will have to be some 2 loss teams on it

I saw what I needed to about PSU against OSU last week. They are not worthy of a 6th in playoff rankings. They were my wildcard and I couldn't make them out tbh. Only thing I can think of is the rankings people put more weight on the BIG10 vs someone like BYU out in Pac12 land, which we all know is a shell of a conference at this point.

Nonetheless, we'll all know exactly who is who by the end of the month. lol. We just need to finish strong and win out... thats it.. simple.

I agree that they seem high at 6th. When you just compare blind resumes, I think undefeated BYU and Indiana should be above them right now.

I was also disappointed the Committee had the same top 12 as the AP. In past years, they had some differences. This year, they seem to be just copying the AP.

I think BYU has an easy path barring they get by Utah, which in recent years is never an easy out when they play at home. Indiana, I hate to say it, is going to get clobbered by OSU at the horseshoe. Usually by end of season teams weed themselves out, but this year there are several that have cake walks on paper to close out the year. The committee doesn't seem to be overly concerned by SoS when making this first ranking. Hopefully that is a factor with their subsequent rankings in the coming weeks.

BYU's toughest game left looks like their road game at 6-2 Arizona State. Utah's really struggling this year, although I suppose it's a rivalry game and anything could happen.

But if Indiana goes 11-1, they'll probably make the Playoff.

I hope they do

We would be ranked higher than them if they lose and I would like to matchup with them in the 1st rd

I could get my head around 16 teams, no first week bye's......Drop the silly "auto" for a conf winner......maybe drop 1 game from everyone to 12 including the conf championship.....so ND plays 12 RS, conference teams play 11 plus a championship / bowl....

Utah can win. The BYU and Utah fan bases despise each other on the level of Michigan and Notre Dame.

I don't understand how Ped state is ranked 6th with 0 top 25 wins.

Way over ranked
Some day you might understand how the beauty pageant continues right into the playoff rankings.

Think about this...
If you have a room that is supposed to be tone deaf to the media...but always has someone among that voting group get on the TV with ESPN to answer question like, why did you have this team ranked xyz.

If these people watch one game, let alone a bunch of games there is no way they can't hear the bias opinion of announcers, talking heads before, during and after the game driving home just how good some team is...

when in fact this is nothing more than a trendy beauty contest JUST EXPANDED TO 12 TEAMS.

The only difference now is there are more teams included....
so there is no doubt they will have the seedings wrong but having 12 versus 4 of the prettiest teams is much better. When this gets to 16 and ultimately 24 teams all of this bias and talking head nonsense will mean very little. Again the seeding will be out of whack but the inclusion will be better.

As long as humans are choosing bias will always have an impact inclusion or seeding.

Impressed with himself.

I just don't see them getting to 24. I think they will settle in on 16 and Im good with that. It should have never been 12 with this first round automatic bye BS, however I will take it over 4.

When you have to win a conference title game, why do you have a problem with the SEC or any conference champion for that matter earning an automatic bye?

Because in some years the conference champ in one of these major conferences won't deserve a bye. Go to 16 teams, 1 plays 16, 2 plays 15 etc..... The top seeds get rewarded with an easier game plus they are at home in the first round. Seems fairer to me

Fair enough.

They'd have to abolish conference championship games for that to happen.

Chitown, seems like these expansions represent a subtle nuance change in what the championship represents. College football with a four team playoff used to crown the team that was best over the entire course of the season. College basketball in contrast, with the 64 team tournament crowns the team that is playing best at the end of the year. I think College football with a 16 team playoff format is clearly moving to the basketball model. I have mixed feelings about this. Adds excitement and extends playoff hopes throughout the season, and overall a plus for fans. But it does lessen or cheapen the importance of each and every game in that a ND, for example, can lose two games and still make the playoffs. Your thoughts?

I think 16 is the sweet spot. If you arent one of the top 16 then you don't deserve to be in it. That just couldn't be said when there were only 4 teams in it(seemed like 6 or 8 teams could be deserving). I don't think it cheapens the season at all, you still have to win as many games as you can, plus you are playing for seeding. Much easier to be a 3 seed(home) and play 14 then it is to be a 8(home) playing a 9. I am SO looking forward this 12 team playoff, 16 is even better. Its going to be exciting. By the way, nothing more exciting then NCAA mens BB tourney.

I dont know if i have a "problem" with it because of the championship, i have a problem with it automatically seeding them. Yea, SEC might be an outlier but you have 3 other conferences that might have an auto seed and home game and be outside of the top 4 for sure.

I don't think in March Madness you auto get a #1 seed because your in a conference. Its selected based on how you performed over the year and the opponents. Maybe the top 2 teams in the SEC should both be number 1.

16 feels right, and it creates the same number of rounds. Its hard to grind through a season and moving beyond 16 would create another round instead of just eliminating the bye.

Cant see them having 5 games tacked on to a college season.....

Should be a 10 game regular season for Conf teams, 11 for independents and a 4 round playoff.

@ftnfan62 Here’s a good start and all of this isn’t necessary nor does it guarantee a two loss ND in the playoffs.

1) Penn State loses two more
2) LSU beats Alabama
3) Texas A&M wins the SEC. That gives ND a strong card to play to get them in at 10-2. That would mean there are no one loss SEC teams and ND beat the SEC winner.

Each of those could reasonably happen.

PSU plays Wash, Min, Maryland and Purdue.....i dont see them losing...1, let alone 2
I think LSU will beat Bama
AM has a very good shot, i am not as high on TX as everyone else.....but i dont think they beat UGA

So i will give you 2 of 3. ;)

Right, but you said “no way” could a two loss ND get in. Those are ways. There’s still other help available.

I won’t be shocked if PSU loses two. Hopefully we won’t have to worry about it but these same events can also help ND get to a 5 or 6 seed.

Here’s to 11-1.

True, that would be a way. But, I would bet they would just slide Ole Miss, Boise and Wash State in and still dump us out. I feel they are already trying to get us out with the "But NIU". Even the ESPN selection show you had Reese saying "The only win was A&M and Navy and they both got destroyed last week". It took Galloway to say "No, they have a great win against Louisville as well and still play Army". The will not talk about PSU or IU yet to play a top 25 team. So I just don't see them giving any quarter to a ND team that has 2 losses to unranked teams that will finish outside of the top 25. If we lose, hope you guys are right but I dont see it.

That’s why A&M winning the SEC helps a lot. My issue is saying “no way”. You’re saying probable reasons for which ND would be kept out. Ole Miss can lose to UGA this week and be out. I highly doubt 11-1 WSU gets in over 10-2 ND. They need Boise to lose and then they take Boise’s place.

A&M beating Texas (they play in College Station) would really help us, too. And that would likely put them into the SEC CG.

Tend to agree with your overall take. However, I do think it lessens the importance of winning each and every game. In a 16 team playoff format, we can afford two losses and probably be guaranteed a spot…much less likely in the current 12 game format, etc…. And yes, the NCAA Tourneys are exciting as hell, and the same would be true of a 16 playoff format for football.

Oh i know but I have some inside sources on this and the ultimate goal is to get to 24 teams and have more quality regular season cross conference games.
This is driven by the networks. The huge sums of money they're shelling out to get these games...
They want less of Rutgers vs OSU at noon and more of the Michigan's versus Texas games at night.

It's easier to get money from Dr. Pepper when you've got nice presumptive high profile matchups.

We will see where this goes but 12 is better than 4 and truthfully it needs to be more.
Unless we go to a 8 division of 16 teams NFL style and get playoff teams that way it will always be based on assumptions and prettiness.
At least with more teams the inclusion will be less wrong but they'll never get the seedlings right.

Nothing special? Lincoln Riley qualified Oklahoma for three 4-team CFB playoff berths in 5 seasons. What would have been special in his 5 seasons in Norman, Ok.? You tell me.
Great offensive QB whisperer. Not elite HC. His defense sucked.

He is the head coach, so you measure him that way. Loved the Big12 when he had the horses…
AND THEN WHEN THEY ANNOUNCED THEY WERE JOINING THE SEC, he couldn’t get out fast enough. Then poor Lincoln went to USC and they joined the Big. So now he wants to lobby for making the OOC schedule easier

Who are current head coaches in CFB that you consider elite?

Just curious...

Do you still consider Norvell elite?

10 losses in his last 11 games. Just got embarrassed by the guy who lost to NIU

Tough business
Deion won again last night. Can’t mock him today like you have done in the past and all of last season.

Gotta find someone.
