Recruiting Notre Dame makes strong impression on 2026 OT Rico Schrieber

I spoke with Notre Dame 2026 offensive tackle prospect Rico Schrieber on Sunday. The 6-foot-7, 330-pound offensive tackle attended Saturday's game against Central Michigan. He is not yet rated or ranked by Rivals.

Schrieber attends Chicago (Ill.) Marist and has six total offers including four Power Five programs: Boston College, Miami (Fla.), Nebraska and Purdue.

He didn't have an opportunity to speak with offensive line coach Joe Rudolph but said he met and spent time chatting with quarterbacks coach Gino Guidugli. Before taking his visit, Schrieber already had connected with Rudolph, Guidugli and senior analyst Kevin Reihner through social media.

"My visit went overall really good," Schrieber told Inside ND Sports. "We got to see the players walk out onto the field. My favorite moment was seeing the players walk out while everyone was watching."

Schrieber and Marist faced Chicago (Ill.) Saint Ignatius College Prep, home to Ohio State 2024 five-star defensive tackle Justin Scott, on Friday. Marist lost 30-27 but Schrieber helped pave the way for a season-high 271 rushing yards.

Schrieber said he didn't have any major takeaways from Notre Dame's play on the field but said the crowd and atmosphere stood out. Being from nearby Illinois, Schrieber said he has a good understanding of Notre Dame's history and tradition as one of the biggest brands in college football.

He didn't leave campus with an offer but said he's excited to come back in the future. A return visit could happen in the winter or spring but Schrieber said he's focusing on his sophomore season for the time being.

"I am very interested in growing a relationship with Notre Dame they’re a great program for offensive linemen and I would be very grateful to get an offer," Schrieber said.

The Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy wide receiver is an Irish legacy. His father, Corny Southall, played cornerback at Notre Dame from 1985-88.

Southall reported two offers from Alcorn State and Brown.

Football Notebook: Ambitions haven't waned for Merriweather in Notre Dame's plans

Got into Notre Dame's heavy 12 personnel usage in the first item and the likelihood of diversifying that moving forward ... also items on the smooth re-entry so far adjusting back to the Eastern time zone, a thumbnail and fun fact about Tennessee State and a quick Eli Raridon update.

Wide Receivers?

I'll be curious to hear from your review on the play of the receivers. It seemed ND rarely had receivers running wide open. More often than not, Hartman was having to hold the ball way too long trying to find an open receiver. Were they just not getting open, were they running lousy routes or were the DB's on the other team that good?

Football Five defining plays from Notre Dame's win over Central Michigan

My five defining plays:

1. Tobias Merriweather’s 75-yard touchdown catch
2. Joshua Burnham’s roughing the passer penalty
3. Audric Estimé’s 17-yard touchdown run
4. Jack Kiser’s sack
5. Jase Bauer’s third-and-2 conversion

Here's why:
