Recruiting 2026 DE Rodney Dunham talks Notre Dame offer, excitement for April visit

Notre Dame offered six total recruits out of North Carolina last Sunday during Pot of Gold Day, and one name to know from the Charlotte area is Myers Park defensive end and four-star target Rodney Dunham.

The 6-foot-5, 210-pound Dunham is ranked as the No. 10 weakside defensive end and No. 190 overall player in the 2026 recruiting class.

Dunham has set a visit for April 13 to check out Notre Dame for a spring practice, which will be his first trip to campus and first recruiting trip not to Duke or South Carolina. Dunham is also a right-handed pitcher and is open to playing both sports in college.

Inside ND Sports spoke with Dunham on Sunday evening to discuss his offer, which coaches he's connected with to this point, how he feels about the Irish prioritizing the Charlotte area and more.

On receiving his offer:

"I was really surprised and honored," Dunham said. "It really made me like reflect on who I am as an athlete and what I can achieve and who I can become in the future. It gave me a lot of confidence and I just felt really thankful."

On who he's spoken with and his relationship with coaches so far:

"I talked to coach Washington, Al Washington. I talked to coach Sebastian, Nick Sebastian, coach Brown, Dre Brown. The defensive coordinator and Freeman."

"It was good. They seem like we're good people and I know they wanted me off-rip but I was surprised that they asked to call. They offered me the second night after the first time we called. We've just been establishing a relationship ever since then."

On Charlotte area and recent recruits to sign with Notre Dame:

"I think it's really cool how they recognize the Carolinas and Charlotte as a main target. There's a lot of talent here. I think there's some good depth and I'm excited about it."

Dunham said Notre Dame's staff like his length, speed off the edge and willingness to never give up on plays.

North Carolina, South Carolina and Duke are standing out to Dunahm currently, and more programs like Clemson or SEC schools could garner interest if they offer this spring or summer. He visited South Carolina on Saturday.

Football Jason Onye keeps pushing for improvement in rotational role for Notre Dame

DT Jason Onye took a big step forward with his game in 2023. He may still be behind Rylie Mills this season, but he's finding ways to expand his game and his role.

"It's about me and coming into practice every single day, going into film sessions and proving my game and seeing me get closer to the gap and closing the gap between me and Rylie — that supposed gap," Onye said.

“That's my job and that's what I want to do. Just keep working, keep getting with Coach Wash and keep asking him those deep, hard questions about, ‘Where do you see Rylie? Where do you see me?’ Doing my job to close that gap."

BAS: Miami overcomes Glancy's power surge to edge Irish, 12-10 in 10 innings

David Glancy homered twice and drove in six runs, but Notre Dame didn’t have enough pitching Sunday to make it stand up as visiting Miami salvaged the final game of a three-game ACC baseball series to avoid a sweep, 12-10 in 10 innings.

Miami leadoff hitter Daniel Cuvet singled home the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th inning and later scored on a sacrifice fly to give the Hurricanes (13-10, 5-4 ACC) some cushion heading into ND’s last at-bat.

Glancy, a grad transfer from St. John’s, struck out, with center fielder TJ Williams on first, to end the game. Earlier, the Irish DH helped Notre Dame (14-9, 2-7) to a 7-1 lead with a fourth-inning grand slam. Then, in the bottom of the eighth, after Miami had scored nine consecutive runs for a 10-7 lead, Glancy followed Williams’ RBI double with a two-run shot to tie the game.

Williams went 4-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBIs. First baseman Connor Hincks had two hits and an RBI, while Tito Flores had a single, a double and a run scored for Notre Dame, which next plays Bowling Green in a non-conference game on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.

Bennett Flynn (1-1) took the loss in relief for the Irish, surrendering four hits, three walks and two earned runs over 2 ⅔ innings. He struck out three.

Recruiting Notre Dame's competitive culture stands out for 2026 DE Jarius Rodgers

In February, Rivals national recruiting analyst @John Garcia Jr. revealed six prospects out of Florida worth monitoring in the 2026 recruiting class. One name on that list was Jarius Rodgers, who Notre Dame football offered a month later during Sunday's Pot of Gold Day recruiting event.

Rodgers, who told me he grew up watching Notre Dame games on TV, visited the Irish on Saturday for his first trip ever to the Midwest as a recruit. Rodgers holds 10 total offers including Georgia Tech, Iowa State, Kentucky, Nebraska and South Florida, but has only visited UCF and Duke, neither of whom have offered.

Notre Dame views the 6-foot-5, 195-pound defender out of Fleming Island (Fla.) High as a vyper end. Per Rivals, Rodgers is a three-star recruit and the No. 14 weakside defensive end in the 2026 class.

I had an opportunity to talk with Rodgers following his visit to see how his trip went, conversations with the staff and more.

On his visit:

"I enjoyed my visit a lot," Rodgers told Inside ND Sports. "It's a really nice campus and the football team is all about competing. Everything they do is a competition in some sort of way ... my favorite moment was seeing the players going out and competing at practice to get better and better."

On the love he's received from ND so far:

"Being a priority at Notre Dame at such a young age is big, they will help me be a great student-athlete. Getting to know [defensive line] coach [Al] Washington and [defensive assistant] coach [Nick] Sebastian was amazing. They were able to build a bond with me and that was important to me knowing that they are the type of coaches you're able to go to if something is wrong."

Rodgers said he also met with head coach Marcus Freeman, defensive coordinator Al Golden and recruiting analyst Becca Sites. He said everybody he talked with stressed the importance of football but educated him on how the program is set up to have its former players find success off the field once their football careers end.

Next season, Rodgers said he hopes to visit Notre Dame for a game. He would like to see how practice translates to a game and receive additional feedback on how he can improve from ND's staff.

MLAX: No. 2 Notre Dame defeats No. 18 Michigan, 19-9, at home

No. 2 Notre Dame men's lacrosse hosted a nationally ranked opponent, No. 18 Michigan, on Saturday at Arlotta Stadium, and the Irish offensive starters proved too much for the Wolverines to handle in a 19-9 victory.

The Wolverines (5-3) built an early 2-1 lead, but ND produced a scoring explosion in the second and third quarters — where the Irish had seven goals in each frame to distance themselves on the scoreboard.

The Irish (5-1) were led by graduate student Jake Taylor's seven goals. Taylor came one shy of tying a program record eight goals, which he scored in 2022. Freshman Jordan Faison scored three goals while grad students Pat Kavanaugh and Devon McLane scored two goals each. Faison, a former walk-on football player (since put on scholarship), enrolled at ND on scholarship for lacrosse and has scored in all six games during his first season under head coach Kevin Corrigan.

Pat's brother, Chris Kavanagh, had a team-high six assists. That performance marked a career-high for the junior who was an All-ACC Team selection in 2023. Pat finished with four assists, while grad student Fulton Bayman and senior Eric Dobson each had one assist.

Grad student goalie Liam Entenmann recorded 14 saves, which is tied for his season-high (had 14 at Maryland on March 3). Entenmann's performance helped him reach 608 saves in his career, making him the fourth player in program history to have 600 or more saves.

ND's victory marks the fourth consecutive win in the head-to-head series. The Irish haven't lost to Michigan since the 2017-18 season.

The Irish return to action on March 30 against No. 6 Syracuse at 2 p.m. EST in South Bend, Ind. It is ND's conference opener.

Box Score: Notre Dame 19, Michigan 9

BAS: Notre Dame earns first ACC series victory of season with 5-2 win over Miami

One day after Notre Dame baseball won an ACC game for the first time this season, the Irish clinched its first ACC series victory Saturday with a 5-2 victory over Miami.

For the second day in a row, Notre Dame's pitching staff keep the Hurricanes in check. Starting pitcher Jack Radel allowed one run in the first inning and pitched three scoreless innings before giving way to junior Ricky Reeth. The right-handed Reeth allowed one run and five hits in five innings to close out the game and earn his first victory of the season (1-2).

Notre Dame tied the game at 1 in the bottom of the first after outfielders TJ Williams and David Glancy were both hit by pitches. A sacrifice bunt by first baseman Connor Hincks moved the runners over, and a sacrifice fly by third baseman Simon Baumgardt scored Williams.

The Irish took the lead with a three-run fourth inning. An RBI double from designated hitter Brady Gumpf plated shortstop Jack Penney. An RBI single from catcher Carson Tinney knocked in right fielder Tito Flores. Then an RBI single from Williams scored Tinney after second baseman Estevan Moreno grounded into a double play.

Miami scored its final run with a solo home run by Edgardo Villegas, the first batter Reeth faced when he entered the game. The Irish added an insurance run in the eighth with an RBI double by Moreno.

Notre Dame (14-8, 2-6 ACC) will attempt a three-game sweep of Miami (12-10, 4-4) on Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. EDT on ACCNX.

Recruiting 2026 OLB Cincere Johnson loves Notre Dame trip, competitive energy from LBs

Notre Dame football hosted 2026 outside linebacker target Cincere Johnson on a visit Wednesday. Johnson, who is not yet ranked or rated by Rivals, was offered by the Irish Sunday during Pot of Gold Day.

The 6-foot-3, 225-pound Johnson attends Cleveland (Ohio) Glenville Academic Campus and holds other offers from Central Michigan, Cincinnati, Kentucky and Toledo.

Louisville, Michigan State and Ohio State have shown interest, and the Buckeyes expect to host Johnson on an unofficial visit Saturday.

I caught up with Johnston to get his impressions of the Irish, time spent with linebackers coach Max Bullough and more.

On his trip

"It was great to be able to go down and visit Notre Dame, it's a great college and a great program," Johnson told Inside ND Sports. "The moment I enjoyed was to go over, watch them practice and see how the coaches work, how the players respond to the coach. And also just being able to talk to the staff and see their philosophies and things like that."

On what the Irish see in his game and their evaluation:

"I had a meeting with Max, we sat down and just talked about football and my film, They see me as a hybrid. I can play the linebacker. I can also rush the passer, play the defensive line and do all of those things ... be an athlete. That's where they see me. They love my aggressiveness, the player I am and how I play the game, how smart I am and how I can recognize things."

On his biggest takeaway from watching spring practice:

"Every player wants a teammate that when you mess up, they'll tell you what you what you did wrong and say, 'Come on, let's go.'"

"Everybody wants a coach that'll work for you and tell you what you did wrong but at the same time they love you. That's something I liked about Notre Dame. They had the competitive aspect and even if they did mess up or get beat, it was just the small things like timing that the coach went over, talked to him, fixed it and got better."

Johnson also raved about head coach Marcus Freeman and said it was easy to connect in person because of his Ohio connection and similar mindset as a former linebacker.

Recruiting A coach's angle: How 2026 OG Tyler Merrill became early Notre Dame target

Notre Dame football has three offensive tackles committed in the 2025 recruiting class and the Irish are making headway at the interior line position in the 2026 class with four-star offensive guard target Tyler Merrill.

Merrill is ranked as the No. 120 overall player and No. 1 offensive guard in the class, per Rivals. He has visited Notre Dame twice in his recruitment, including last October for the USC game, and is scheduled to return to campus on April 6.

ND pulled the trigger by offering Merrill on Sunday during Pot of Gold Day. The 6-foot-5, 305-pound Merrill reports 20 offers including Ohio State, Penn State, Michigan, Nebraska, Pittsburgh, Rutgers and Syracuse, and has taken seven unofficial visits to the Nittany Lions since 2022.

I talked with Josh Oswalt, head coach at Mechanicsburg (Pa.) Cumberland Valley, to learn more about Merrill. Oswalt spoke about coaching Merrill, his competitive drive, offensive line coach Joe Rudolph's early impact and more. Below are a few standout quotes from our conversation:

Q: What's the process been like coaching him and having him inside your program?

A (part of a larger quote): "His work has gotten way better," Oswalt told Inside ND Sports. "He's light on his feet. He's quick. He's intuitive. He's instinctive. He's smart on the field but also off the field. He does a lot of those things that you can't coach a kid to do. And his aggression ... usually I get a big man and he's soft. He's just a big old teddy bear. Tyler is that but he's not that on the field. He's an aggressive, angry human being out there on the field."

Q: Why would Tyler be a good fit at Notre Dame?

A (part of a larger quote): "Now, what Notre Dame has for it is an unbelievable head coach, Marcus Freeman, who is a great figurehead. Coach Rudolph has been tremendous in the recruiting process, being a Pennsylvania guy and recruiting [in] this area. I think that gives them a leg up."

"Tyler enjoyed the visit when he came out for a game this fall. That's important knowing what I know about South Bend. You don't want to go to South Bend in the summertime and try to think what this place could look like. You gotta go experience a game day in the middle of the school year to experience the full effect of what South Bend can do and what football can bring to the area."

Q: What's a moment that describes Tyler's football character the best?

A (part of a larger quote): "We're in a unique area. There is another incredible offense and defensive lineman in the same class that we compete against in our league. Tyler's not the guy who feasts on the underlings. He likes that competition between guys that are going to be at his level. The young man plays in Harrisburg High School and his preparation for that week, again, every week he's focused but his preparation for that week was uber-focused. To see it in his eyes going into that game [and] competing throughout that game, and in my opinion, dominating the line of scrimmage anytime he was going up against that guy or anybody else was impressive."

The player Oswalt was hinting at above is 2026 offensive tackle target Kevin Brown, who also scored an offer on Pot of Gold Day.

Merrill is expected to visit Alabama, Michigan and Penn State this spring. The Crimson Tide have not extended an offer yet.

Basketball MBB: Update | 2025 five-star SF target Jalen Haralson includes ND in top nine

Notre Dame 2025 small forward target Jalen Haralson posted a date on his X/Twitter account Monday that could hint at a commitment date or a cutdown to a list of final schools.

Haralson, a five-star recruit and the No. 8 overall player in the 2025 recruiting class reports 25 offers including ND, Auburn, Duke, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan State and Purdue. He is the highest-ranked target on Micah Shrewsberry's board in the class.

The Irish hosted Harlason on unofficial visits on Feb. 14 (Georgia Tech game) and Oct. 14, 2023 (USC football game).

Earlier this year, Haralson, who attends La Porte (Ind.) La Lumiere School, told Rivals basketball recruiting staff member Jason Jordan he plans to be one-and-done in college.

“Relationships and style of play are two big things for me,” Haralson said. “I just want to be somewhere that I’ll be able to play my game and win. I have a lot of great options, so I’m confident I’ll make the right choice when the time comes. Right now, though, I still have a long way to go with my recruitment. I’m just taking it day by day at this point. I’m not in any type of rush or anything.”

Story on Haralson from last summer.
