I don't "expect" it. I just said that IF they gave up only 7, I would have been fine. My expectation is for good fundamental football, and not giving up huge plays that aren't one on one coverage. That's not what's happening with the defense. If they played with better fundamentals, they would be giving up a lot less points.

Don't take this for me being a Kelly basher or unhappy with the team. Its just the defense lacking in fundamentals and giving up big plays.

FUN-da-MENTALS. Fundamentals are something that happen regardless of who you're playing. A bad team can take advantage of bad fundamentals too. You donmt need to be a condescending prick dude. The talked about Max Redfield last night and joked he wanted to get a doctorate in Van Gorder's defense or something like that, which leads me to believe it is just too complicated for our players.

The offense continues to have RZ gaffaws! There are an inordinate # of blunders inside the 10.
ND left at least 17 points off the board in the 1st half!
If execution/discipline is not part of coaching, then what the hell is?

(348, had mentioned that ND needed to stay close till late 2nd half when the cold weather might get to the California kids. was weather a factor?)

God, you are a dick, 24-7. If you didn't notice, the ability to run the ball last night was crucial to our success.

And I'd add the rushing attack was never Davie's problem. Willingham is the guy who who tried to incorporate more of a passing offense and Weis's teams were notorious for their lack of a running attack.

Oh, as for my OP. I do believe if this team lost last night, that they would have wasted the best opportunity they would have,for years, to beat SC. And recruits would have thought the same. You do not lose to a team with significant injuries, off sanctions less than 1 recruiting session, and having an interim coach for 5 days on the job, and you are playing at home, If you cannot beat them then, then....
So, this was an exceptionally important game!

But, my long attitude and criteria for a success as a ND coach is BEAT USC; under any circumstances.
Whatever the disadvantages (sactions, coaches, injuries) SC has/had I give a R-A!

Kelly has a 4-2 record! for me, W: that is a winning season! WELL DONE!

Defense was out of position at times and missed tackles. I'm not crazy about van gorders scheme but man is it better than diaco's scheme. Something to remember, referred set this game up for the offense it's part of the reason there isn't a dominating d out there. Kessler is one of the nations best qbs unless you pressure him. Second half he got happy feet when the game got tight.....ball game

Tackling on USCs last drive was pretty good ... lots of 5 yard passes and 0 YAC. The 4th quarter interceptions were nice too.

The total lack of football knowledge here is amazing. USC recruits some of the best players in the country and will and should give Notre Dame a struggle every time they play. A win over ND's biggest rival is always a good thing and Brian Kelly control I use to show he gets it and may well be doing his best job in a very successful coaching career at Notre Dame.
