ACC on the verge of splintering

May not be a bad thing for the Irish. IMO the ☘️ should stay with the other 7 schools (Duke, Wake etc) because all other sports we can compete and win conference championships AND they should be able to cut down on how many ACC football games they have to play. Instead of 5 games make it 3 games and have better schedules.

I don’t think a seven school conference can survive in this day and age. The TV deal would be pathetic. Just more consolidation into fewer larger conferences. Interesting that this is portrayed as a seven vs seven dynamic. It is in terms of the support for changing the tv revenue sharing details. But the future of the conference will be determined by whether the Big and/or SEC come poaching. Clemson and Fl St and Miami may hate the deal they all accepted that imposes huge financial penalties for leaving, but that’s exactly what has kept the conference intact during this crazy period of consolidation. As for ND, I think the key for whether we cave and join either the Big or SEC or remain independent continues to be the size of TV deal that we can negotiate this time around.

It won't be 7 teams. I think they have to have 2/3s to break grant of rights. What they are exploring is the possibility of dropping the dead weight to increase the revenue per school to be more competitive.

I'm in Raleigh and NCSU alum, there are rumors of trying to get the grant of rights broken...convincing a couple northern schools to go to big 10 and possibly merge the remaining 9-11 teams with big 12 to make a coast to coast competitor with the other two big conferences.

It's all speculation at this point.

I’m interested to see what will happen if there is a massive realignment. Will the ACC allow us to do our pseudo-half football 6 game membership and half Indy schedule?

If the mega conferences go to a 10 conference game schedule, how does that impact our ability to schedule solid opponents?
Who knows.

If somehow we’re forced fully into a conference, I hope it’s the Big 10 and not the ACC, especially if their top teams leave (Clemson, FSU, Miami, etc.) The last thing we want is to be associated with the leftovers who weren’t invited into the mega conferences. At least the big 10 has Michigan, Ohio State, Penn St and USC. Makes more sense logistically as well as most of the teams are in the Midwest.

The biggest brand in college football won't have a problem landing a spot in a conference if it came down to that. Both the BIG 10 and SEC would give their left and right nut to land ND.

After reading your response I do agree. A 7 team conference won’t fly unless they can add more schools, but who can they get?

I agree but ND won’t get the same deal as they got now.

This has been brewing for many years. People can't stand the idea of a large number of equals. NCAA, CFA, BCS, P5, P4... everyone cares only about who is biggest.

The question is if the Big 12 will survive going forward. Take a look at their TV markets and that should tell you all you need to know

There are 60+ schools that play decent football without a good tv market. They will need conferences. Right now the Big12's problem is that they added a bunch of islands that don't fit for any reason other than a tv contract. I think UCF might be joining the Big12.

I agree, completely. Personally just hope it would be the Big 10 if we do have to fully align.
