Clemson Post Game Observations

It’s 7:05am I just got to work I’m exhausted but man does it feel good! A few things that stuck out to me.

This team has a heart of a champion. Kelly said in the pregame he wanted players to make plays and so many guys across the board made plays. Book, Williams, Simon, Hayes, McKinley, Davis and the list goes on. A true team victory.

One of the things that impressed me the most was how this team dug down facing adversity. You gotta think they had a handful of people at the game but they never gave up after the Book fumble, after the PI flag was picked up, after the Ben drop with 2:06 to go, and with 91yds between them and a statement, they answered the bell. It was all them, no raucous packed house, they had to find a way to change momentum.

Speaking of Book, hats off to him. I’ve said before I didn’t think he could lead us to a championship but he’s just a flat out winner. He’s still going to have games that he struggles or gets happy feet in the pocket but I will give him his just due, he’s a baller. He’s not a 6’5” 5* but what he is, a winner. He played an absolutely fantastic game last night.

Kyren Williams played lights out. Finishes every run and showed the same things he’s been doing all year. His blitz pickups were crucial. No half hearted effort, he flat brings it at the point of contact. The kid is 100% the definition of physical.

Speaking of physical, you think Clemson knows they played a football game last night. 🤪

Jeff Quinn, I apologize for doubting you. The OL was flat $$$ like they’ve been all year.

Kelly I love the swag you’ve shown over the last couple weeks please continue to coach to win and not playing it safe. I said last week I thought they’d come out sharp, that they had a swag or air about them that was different and last night I saw a bare knuckle fist fight. This team knows theyre good. The stage isn’t to big anymore. I will say now, if this team gets beat it won’t be because we are unprepared and I haven’t felt that way since Holtz. We looked like we belonged last night and that hasn’t been the case in a long, long time.

I have plenty more that I won’t bore you with and I’m guessing my employer would probably like it if I actually got to work but I will leave you with this, HOW BOUT OUR IRISH!! Man doesn’t this feel good! ☘️🏈

November 8: This Day In Notre Dame History

I know this is so impertinent this morning, but I started this on September 1 and have to see it through to the end. The Irish are 12-3-1, most recently a 55-31 defeat at Arizona State in 2014.

Bronze Medal, 1947: Army, which never lost from 1944-46, visits Notre Dame Stadium for the first time after almost all the previous games had been held in New York, specifically Yankee Stadium. Terry Brennan returns the opening kickoff for a touchdown in the 27-7 Irish victory en route to their second straight national title. In fact, from 1943-47, Notre Dame (3) and Army (2) had won all the national titles.

Silver Medal, 1952: The first meeting ever between Notre Dame and Oklahoma results in what many old-timers have classified as one of the 5-10 most exciting games in Notre Dame Stadium, a 27-21 Irish victory. Heisman winner Billy Vessels rushes for a record 195 yards against Notre Dame, but Dan Shannon’s thundering tackle on the kickoff after tying the Irish tied the score at 21-21 leads to a lost fumble that sets up the go-ahead TD. Notre Dame would finish No. 3 while defeating the champs of the Big 8 (OU), Southwest (Texas), Pac-8 (USC) and co-champ of Big Ten (Purdue).

Gold Medal, 1975: Jerome Heavens sets a Notre Dame freshman single game rushing record with 148 yards during a 24-3 victory versus Georgia Tech on Senior Day, but the show — or movie, in this case — is stolen when 27-year-old walk-on Dan “Rudy” Ruettiger is inserted in the final seconds to fulfill a life-long dream, and records a sack to end the game.
Personally, the '52 Oklahoma game would be my choice for the Gold from a sheer excitement standpoint, but the effect of the movie is more everlasting and impactful through the decades.

Comebacks and Grit

The individual comebacks during the game were an illustration of what Brian Kelly calls grit (his favorite expression) Mayer after looking like a Freshman on the first 2 drives, has a monster 2 nd half. Avery Davis just misses a third down TD pass, then makes two huge plays on the tying drive. Ian Book after the fumble, then the non interference call and dropped pass on the next to last drive.

A lot of character was shown in the 4th quarter and the overtimes
