In the obligatory read, Official Weather Thread (https://notredame.forums.rivals.com/threads/official-weather-thread.160248/#post-3155737) you asked about the ND-BC Rivalry. It may not be a rivalry in the truest of senses and it may not be one to ND fans, but it's a big deal to BC fans and to people in New England. Here's a little background as I remember it growing up:

The two teams first met in 1975 in a game at the old Schaeffer Stadium. It wasn't much of a game with ND winning 17-3, but in a heavily Irish area, it was a thrill that mighty Notre Dame had come to town.

Now here comes the rub. It actually started before the 1975 game but it continued through the 70's and early 80's. Boston College was largely a commuter school with financial issues, nothing like the multi-billion dollar endowment school it is now. In fact, there were points in the 70's where the school almost went bankrupt. To help with finances and recognition, BC made a conscious decision to emulate ND in football. It went okay until a guy named Flutie came along.

Flutie led BC against ND in the 1983 Liberty Bowl. It was a much more competitive game, but ND prevailed 19-18 and Flutie was the MVP of the game. The next year Flutie and BC beat Miami, 47-45, on the Flutie "Hail Mary" to Gerard Phelan. Well, college football was never bigger around here than it was then. It likely never will be again, either. That win leads to the "Flutie Effect" and transforms BC from a nearly insolvent commuter school (with an excellent academic reputation, nonetheless) into a internationally recognized university (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flutie_effect). Mission accomplished using the Notre Dame model. For all those folks that want to diminish football at ND, keep that in mind.

Even with that, BC was still the little brother of the only 2 Catholic schools in the FBS. Another regular season game is scheduled in 1987 and again, it's competitive but ND wins it 32-25. After that though, the two schools get to talking about being regular opponents and in 1990 I believe they sign a deal to play regularly each year. In Boston this was big news and I remember a TV sports host saying that he couldn't believe ND would agree to regularly play another Catholic school because it diminished their brand. It was also looked at as a great deal for BC on one hand because of the regular national recognition they would get but but bad on the other hand because it was David vs. Goliath and it would almost certainly be a loss you could pencil in every year.

That's exactly what it turned out to be in the first meeting in 1992 with ND crushing BC 54-7. If you watched the game on Saturday you saw the infamous fake punt that greatly offended the Eagles and had them hell bent on revenge.

That leads us to the 1993 game. At that time, Boston sports absolutely sucked. Larry Bird retired the year before and Reggie Lewis died earlier in the year. Bill Parcells was the next coach of the James Busch Orthwein-owned Patriots and his record was 1-8 at game time. The Red Sox were dreadful and the Bruins were a decent team but destined for an early out in the playoffs. Anyway, I'll omit the game save for David Gordon's (fixed with thanks to @Silent Banjo ) 41 yard FG. David felled Goliath and New England rejoiced. I remember it like it was yesterday. The euphoria of New England college football fans was something that I had only seen in that 1984 BC-Miami game.

Never mind Under the Tarnished Dome, Monk Malloy, Kevin White, George O'Leary, Ty Willingham, many people I know think that that was the downfall of ND football. Not me, though. No, that came the next year.

IN 1994 ND went to Chestnut Hill where Lou Holtz told his players that, "This team and this team only prevented you from winning a National Championship last year." The motivation didn't work and ND lost again, 30-11. Goliath might have stumbled the year before, but he died there. If you kip a few years, BC owned ND for a stretch there as well, most notably beating an 8-0 Ty Willingham led squad in 2002 14-7 in South Bend. This series has greatly benefited BC. ND not so much.

Things have never been quite the same for ND football since then and in that way it's kind of a rivalry. Well except that maybe Brian Kelly has it trending back, both for ND and dominance over BC. For the firs time (really over the past couple of years) we have a good, balanced team with a solid defense and I think you're really going to start seeing some great football moving forward.

This was pretty much all from memory so if somebody finds a mistake or knows more of the story please correct me.

Stat: "Winning Ugly"

Just heard this stat, and I wonder what BK's record is in this scenario at ND. Maybe @Patrick Engel or @Lou Somogyi can help me out.

Since Pat Fitzgerald took over at Northwestern he has won 103 games. 48 of those were one-score games. Style of play and having a less-talented team in a lot of cases is the reason for that, but that's crazy that a coach would be in his 15th season (10 with a winning record) and nearly half of those wins would come with such margins.

Can you name the other program that NW is tied with for one-score victories in that span?

Recruiting Lucky Charms: Update On Rivals100 CB Ceyair Wright

Here are tonight's Lucky Charms...

*** Notre Dame is involved in some big recruitments down the stretch of the 2021 class, and none is bigger than Los Angeles Loyola cornerback Ceyair Wright. He visited Michigan over the weekend and loved his time in Ann Arbor. He told Rivals.com's Adam Gorney that Michigan's on the field struggles don't impact him, but what I would imagine could play a major role is whether or not there are major coaching changes for the Wolverines. If I'm Notre Dame, Michigan isn't my biggest concern right now.

*** The bigger concern is whether or not Wright makes it back to South Bend. He's planning to come in for the Dec. 5 weekend, which is when the Irish take on Syracuse for its home finale, but I don't believe his plane tickets are booked just yet. A few months ago, Notre Dame was in a logjam with about a dozen other programs on his list. As time has gone on, Notre Dame has been a constant, and I'm gaining much more optimism in the Irish's chances here.

*** Trips to Nebraska, Utah and Oregon are being discussed as well by Wright, but I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't take any of those trips and only heads out to Notre Dame before making his decision. Currently, the three schools I think that have the best chances here are Michigan, Notre Dame and USC. I never really bought into Stanford for Wright, and they're fading. If Wright makes it to South Bend Dec. 5 which would potentially be his final visit ahead of a Jan. 2 decision date, then watch out. You can be assured that Blake Fisher and the gang will be on campus too.

*** Moving on to a couple of 2022 targets... Naples (Fla.) High defensive back Devin Moore will be a difficult land for the Irish considering his location and schools on his offer list, but the 6-3, 182-pounder feels very valued by the Irish coaching staff. He hears regularly from Irish safeties coach Terry Joseph and was impressed with Notre Dame's victory over Clemson. "It definitely shocked me and reinforces how top tier Notre Dame is," Moore told me after the Irish's big win. Florida, Florida State, Stanford and Virginia are some of the top schools on Moore's list.

*** Hammond (Wis.) St. Croix Central offensive lineman Carson Hinzman was one of Notre Dame's first two O-line offers in the 2022 class and has built a close relationship with position coach Jeff Quinn. Hinzman is not close to any major decisions in his recruitment. He mentioned Iowa, Alabama, Oregon, Notre Dame, Wisconsin, Penn State, LSU and Michigan as schools doing a good job in his recruitment in an article with our Wisconsin rivals website.. At the end of the day, I do not see this kid going far from home. I think Wisconsin is the team to beat but Notre Dame will give the Badgers a run for their money.

My Two Cents- BC 2020

Well, the dreaded “hangover” that so many feared didn’t materialize. For the 2nd time in 3 years, ND has started the season by going 8-0. The beginning of the game caused some heart palpitations on the game thread, but honestly the outcome was never in doubt to me. The secondary had some issues, but overall this was just a dominant win by ND in every facet of the game. Johnny had a good early outlook:

This may not be very fun... their passing game is an issue to deal with. Get pressure on PJ and it should help a lot. They have 2 very good WRs.

Welles Crowther- The man the Red Bandana Game honors each year. Such an inspirational story. Thank you for your service, Welles! A foundation in his name creates and teaches training on leadership and character for young people on topics such as “Lessons on Leadership, Caring for Others, TEAM, The Power of One, Bridging Divides, Forgiveness and Carpe Diem.” https://www.redbandannaproject.org/

Brian Kelly- Congratulations on your 100th victory at ND! Geek Stat: BK is 6-0 against BC… since he’s been at ND. He lost the season opener to BC in his final year at Central Michigan, 31-24 in 2006. Login to view embedded media
Broadcast- Again, ABC/ESPN sucks. It’s an empty stadium and I can barely hear the announcers, and at times I couldn’t hear them at all. And what was up with that high pitched sound? Very annoying.

Hot Potatoes- Between all of the fumbles drops, interceptions, crazy on-sides kicks and just plain sloppy play it seemed liked nobody wanted to hold on to the ball.

Mkjd.gif

Book/PJ- I learned what I always learn in matchups between 2 QBs: One guy’s team is better than the other. In this case, Book’s team was clearly better at every level. I’m happy with Book as our QB and his performance was clearly better than PJ’s in this game. Some of PJ’s completions were terrible throws that his receivers made happen. He’s coming back from a separated shoulder, had no run game and the ND defense was all over him all game. That said, PJ is a good, talented, QB and he’s going to get better. Had he stayed at ND he’d probably be starting next year. I was him luck moving forward. That said, you can’t overlook Book’s performance or his stat line:

Book and Skowronek- The stats on both were impressive (Book-ends of the 3 ND passing TDs), but let’s take a look at a few of the standout plays that they were involved in:

Book alone up first. How many times do you see a QB lower the boom on a LB to get 1st down yardage? He’s tough and he’s a leader-

If that’s taunting at the end then my ex-wife gets flagged every time!

Book-Skowronek #2

Book-Skowronek #3

giphy.gif

I showed those 3 plays in particular because they highlight what I’ve said about Book in the past: He puts the ball where only his receivers can get it. When he throws an incomplete pass it always seems like a tactical decision to throw where nobody can catch it because he doesn't have an open receiver. This is why he throws so few INTs. I’m always going on about passing efficiency so here’s the big stat from Saturday: Book completed 71.4% of his passes in this game.

On the 2nd TD, before the pass look at Book move. He runs backwards and off-balance better than anyone I’ve ever seen. It looks like a skit from the Benny Hill Show.

Of course nothing’s perfect. Skowronek did have a fumble in the 2nd half that didn’t lead to any points and I think Book was mainly responsible for the fumble involving Tyree in the 1stQ

Shaun Crawford- I can’t get enough of this guy’s story, coming back from all of those injuries and having such a tremendous impact this year. He led the team with 9 tackles, 1.5 for loss, but none was bigger than this early sack. He looked like Spiderman going after a criminal. He must have read @ToledoJohnny ‘s post about pressure and let PJ know it was going to be a hard day.

This>
Nice reunion between Crawford and Phil

I believe he also had an INT negated by a penalty, as well. Sure, he missed on a couple of plays but solid overall.

He Said It Best- RE: Game Thread:
The overreaction in these threads is always worth the price of admission. 🤣

Mayer- Only 1 catch for 12 yds but this guy is a real weapon.

giphy.gif

O-Line- Defensively, BC had no sacks and only a single tackle for loss. In addition to Book’s 283 yards passing, ND rushes for 274 yards. That’s as impressive a line of statistics as you’ll find in a football game. Sure, Book’s ability to escape in the pocket and scramble helped put a shine on the line’s effort, but watching a few replays, particularly on the TD passes, Book had plenty of time with solid protection throughout the game.

Defense- Only 1 sack but 7 tackles for loss and held BC to 85 yards rushing. They kept good pressure on PJ all day and had some good hits on him when he scrambled. As always though, it was about the big plays, like Hayes’ fumble recovery. PJ and another BC player should have recovered this but Hayes is so athletic and strong he just bulled his way past them and recovered the ball. Not only did this deprive BC a chance to put more points on the board, it led to another TD just before halftime putting ND up 31-16. The fat lady was warming up.

It Was Over When (Part 1)- Kiser- He picked off PJ setting up ND on a short field. Flemister sealed it by punching in a TD a short time later to go up 38-16. Like the USF game (although not to the same degree) Kiser had a great game.

giphy.gif

It Was Over When (Part2)- Flemister - We’ve ben pining for that power, short yardage running game here for a while, well now you have it. Look at the 2nd and 3rd effort that C’Bo gives on his 2nd TD here. Geek Stats: He had a 1 yd TD and a 2 yd TD and still racked up an additional 50 yds on 8 other carries for a 6.25 ypc.

giphy.gif

Tremble- 0 catches for 0 yards = a huge impact. He was crushing defenders with his blocks. Look at his smoke the defender on the TD above.
Tremble is just a beast. He brings the fkn nasty on every play. Love that dude’s attitude.

Avery Davis- Is a unique talent. Whether it’s big play receptions, timely possession receptions, or one of the few reverses that I’ve seen ND pull of successfully, this guy does it all and he’s only getting better.
giphy.gif

giphy.gif

Analyst of the Game- With regard to the Davis GIF above, I missed this very important block until @Tilion80 pointed it out. I love it when someone shows me a subtle nuance of the game that I missed.
McKinnely deserves a helmet sticker for that play. Incredibly to know when the ball was out and 3 cleared coverage. Finds the next man immediately and makes an incredible block in space

Post of the Game- The final score was yet to be decided when this was posted, but the outcome surely wasn’t. Nothing’s perfect and there’s always room for improvement, but you have to feel really good about this team:
you wanna know how good ND is.... today we saw a team shot themselves with penalties, 3 turnovers, phantom class from the refs and still to this point muster up 38 points with a 15 point going into the 4th quarter. This game has to sides... of course the bright side but also have to be disappointed with the mistakes. ND left some points out there and still is a dominate team. I guess if they are going to play with mistakes today is that day. Learn, improve and get better as a team..

Moving On-
So I’m 53 year’s old and this is the best ND team since 1993.

Yeah. It is. And BK has helped exorcise another demon that has plagued ND for the 27 years since then, namely that loss to BC after beating #1 FSU.

Notre Dame Finishes No. 1 Again In Overall NCAA Graduation Success Rate (GSR)

Per the data released Tuesday afternoon (Nov. 17), Notre Dame has claimed the 2020 national championship for graduating student-athletes in all sports — thereby posting the top NCAA Graduation Success Rate (GSR) figure (98) for the 14th straight year.

The GSR number for all Notre Dame student-athletes rates the Irish first among the football-playing institutions (tied with Northwestern and Duke) in the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly Division I-A). The 2020 NCAA figures are based on entering classes from 2010 through 2013.

Other NCAA-issued GSR and federal figures released today:

  • Nineteen of 22 Irish athletic programs analyzed posted GSR figures of 100 percent, and 11 produced federal rate scores of 100.
  • For the 15th time in 16 years, Notre Dame ranks first on a percentage basis in terms of number of GSR 100 scores, among all FBS schools.
  • Nineteen of Notre Dame’s 22 men’s and women’s programs posted GSR numbers that rank best in the nation within their sports – and 11 produced federal graduation rates that led all FBS institutions.
  • All 11 of Notre Dame’s women’s athletic programs posted perfect, 100, GSR scores. Notre Dame is one of only two FBS schools that can make that claim.
Whether measured by the federal government in its Department of Education report or by the NCAA through its GSR numbers, graduation rates for Notre Dame student-athletes once again rank among the national leaders in a variety of categories.

For the 13th year in a row Notre Dame leads the nation in GSR categories both for all student-athletes (at 98) and female student-athletes (100). Notre Dame’s GSR figure for male student-athletes has ranked number one in eight of the past 11 years (second this year at 96). Using the federal formula, Notre Dame graduated a four-year average of 92 percent of its student-athletes, behind only Stanford at 93.

In addition to its number-one GSR ranking for all student-athletes (98), Notre Dame finished tied for first among female student-athletes at 100, third among male student-athletes at 96 percent.

Ian Book leaving the pocket early?

He seems to have fixed this fatal flaw. The throw to Avery Davis was an interesting example. He stayed settled down, locked in, and made the play when it would’ve been reasonable to have bailed.

I don’t think I’ve seen him abandon the pocket early going on a few games now. The fact he held up against Clemson is probably proof enough.

Book has just about fully arrived. He’s exceeded my expectations.

Go Irish!

OT: NBA off season sees wild trading spree

On the first day of free agency a flurry of dealing occurred.

Among the transactions:

Suns get Chris Paul and Abdel Nader from the Thunder for Rickey Rubio, Kelly Oubre, and 2 first round swap picks

Bucks get Jrue Holiday from the Pelicans for Eric Bledsoe, George Hill, and 3 first round picks

Bucks also get Bojan Bogdonavic and Justin James from the Kings for Donte DiVicinzo, D.J. Wilson, and Ersan Ilvasoya.

Lakers get Dennis Schroeder from the Thunder for Danny Green and a 1st round pick

Plenty more deals, and more coming.

Thoughts? By all means lets also hear from the professional NBA haters.

Revisiting BC Game Thread

what is wrong with this offense ? FG? after 1st on 6ydline? Defense looks like they have no clue, no rush, backs out of position is this Clemson II for BC
DId Lea make the trip not sure the D did
ND looks awful on Def. they actl ike they have no clue what BC is doing and act like they are sleeping
1993 all over again. SMH. Pathetic.
We are trouble. Buckle up.
At this moment... this is the most uninspired, undisciplined, raggedy team that we have seen in ND unit’s in a long time.
Man he is Mr fing fumble. Good god Kyren.
Our pass defense isn’t very good. Holy crap.
Fumbleitis. We are lucky to be winning. We could be up by 4 TDs now
Buckle your seatbelts I think we’re in for a bumping ride the way this game is playing out
Another turnover and we will be in Big Trouble!
Our reserves got destroyed.
The defense needs to run some laps during the bye week. Now a straight up pathetic performance.....nothing left in the tank.
Total lack of discipline in this game, penalties on both off. and def., fumbles (3), missed turnover chances (at least 2), personal fouls and how many of those unsportsmanlike conduct (3). Ridiculous! So is it coaching? Is it "showing off as Clemson beaters"? Lack of focus? They are scoring and winning, have generally stopped BC, but pretty ugly and BK better get these guys heads on straight, playing good football is one thing but the rest is unacceptable for a potential Playoff team. What is the deal with Williams on the bench? Why are these starters in the game, unbelievable.
You should be trying to score on the last possession, not run out the clock. It's not our job to keep the score down, it's their job to do it. Again the shows a lack of Killer Instinct

November 17: This Day In Notre Dame History

The Irish are 12-4 on this date, and today's feature includes the two most recent such games, plus a Notre Dame legend who left this world last week.

Bronze Medal, 1956: In his final home game amidst the throes of a 2-8 season, Paul Hornung scores all 21 points on three touchdown runs and three kicked extra points — the last seven with 1:16 left — in a 21-14 victory versus North Carolina. HIs four completions total 103 yards, and he adds 91 on the ground. The student body carries him off the field on their collective shoulders.

Silver Medal, 2018: At Yankee Stadium for the Shamrock Series, unbeaten Notre Dame moves to 11-0 when it plays its best all-around game of the year in a 36-3 route of No. 12 Syracuse, which came within the final minute of defeating No. 1 and eventual national champ Clemson earlier in the year (the Orange would finish No. 15).

Gold Medal, 2012: On a picture perfect fall afternoon, the No. 3-ranked Fighting Irish leave Notre Dame Stadium for the first time ever with an 11-0 record on Senior Day, headlined by Manti Te'o, after a 38-0 rout of Wake Forest. This on the heels of a school record-tying five straight seasons with at least five losses. That evening No. 1 Oregon loses in overtime to Stanford, and No. 2 Kansas State is routed by Baylor — and Notre Dame gets all 60 votes in the AP to move up to No. 1 for the first time in 19 years. The longest previous drought from the top spot since the start of the poll in 1936 was 10 years from the start of 1954 into November of 1964.
