What would House v. NCAA settlement mean? A revenue-sharing model to end college amateurism

Story from Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports

The next evolution of college athlete compensation is on the horizon.

College leaders and plaintiff lawyers, in negotiations now for months, are inching closer to arriving at an agreement to settle the House antitrust lawsuit and usher into the sport a new model that features sharing revenue with athletes.

But it’s not here just yet, and plenty of hurdles lie ahead.

The negotiations have been no real secret within the college sports industry. In fact, discussions have grown serious enough that a potential revenue-sharing model has been socialized with administrators — something Yahoo Sports reported earlier this month.

On Monday, reporting from ESPN shined more of a light on the negotiations: They are heating up.

But what does a settlement of the House v. NCAA case entail exactly? What does it mean for your school? How does it impact the future of college sports? And are all of the school presidents on board?

We'll try to explain what is a very complicated — and fluid — situation.

The five head coaches of the men's lacrosse programs submitted votes for the All-ACC Team and the conferences awards. Notre Dame won four of the five major awards.

Football Update: Central Michigan RB Jake Tafelski commits to transfer to Notre Dame as walk-on

Notre Dame continues to evaluate ways it can improve the depth on its roster, and that even extends to the preferred walk-on running back/special teams contributor market.

The Irish hosted former Central Michigan running back Jake Tafelski this past weekend. Jeff Douglas captured a photo of him at Saturday's Blue-Gold Game.

Recruits Jake Tafelski 04.20.24 93rd Notre Dame Blue-Gold Game Presented By Meijer-195.jpg

Tafelski spent four seasons with the Chippewas but redshirted as a true freshman in 2020. The 6-foot, 220-pound product of Dearborn (Mich.) High played in 25 games at Central Michigan with most of his snaps occuring on special teams. He totaled seven carries for 21 yards and one touchdown and six receptions for 42 yards in his CMU career. He also recorded six tackles.

Tafelski is a graduate transfer with two seasons of eligibility remaining. As long as he gets into Notre Dame, I like his chances of ending up with the Irish.

MLAX: No. 1 Notre Dame beats No. 5 Virginia, 11-9, to finish regular season

Notre Dame men's lacrosse finished its regular season Saturday by completing a sweep of ACC opponents.

The No. 1 Irish capped a 4-0 conference record with an 11-9 victory over No. 5 Virginia.

Notre Dame (10-1) did so with a strong defensive performance. The Irish held Virginia (10-4, 1-3 ACC) to its lowest goal opponent since May 2022. The Cavaliers scored six goals in the first half but only managed six shots on goal in the second half.

Notre Dame goaltender Liam Entenmann saved 11 shots in the game. Virginia's Matthew Nunes saved 10, but he allowed 11 in a losing effort.

The 11 goals for Notre Dame are its second-lowest total of the season behind a 10-goal performance in an overtime loss to Georgetown in February.

Seven Notre Dame players accounted for goals in the win over Virginia. Devon McLane led the Irish with three goals. Pat Kavanagh and Jake Taylor both logged two goals. Chris Kavanagh, Jordan Faison, Jeffery Ricciardelli and Max Busenkell each put one in the net.

Faison scored the go-ahead goal at 10-9 with 9:12 remaining in the game. McLane beat the shot clock on an assist from Busenkell with 3:41 left to give Notre Dame a little breathing room.

Pat Kavanagh, a graduate student, added two assists to set Notre Dame's career points record with 274. He surpassed Randy Colley's 273, which was set in 1995. Chris Kavanagh, Pat's younger brother, and Busenkell also added tallied two assists on the attack.

The Irish picked up a season-high 50 ground balls. Entenmann and Will Lynch each picked up six ground balls.

Notre Dame's 10-1 record includes a 5-0 record against top-10 opponents this season. The Irish have won eight straight games in a season for the first time since winning 10 in a row during the 2012 season.

No. 1 seed Notre Dame and No. 4 seed Virginia will meet again Friday in Charlotte, N.C., at American Legion Memorial Stadium for the semifinals of the ACC Tournament. The game will be televised on ACC Network at 5 p.m. EDT.

No. 2 seed Syracuse (11-4, 3-1) and No. 3 seed Duke (11-4, 1-3) will play Friday at 8 p.m. The champonship game will be played Sunday, May 5, at 12 p.m.

BOX SCORE: Notre Dame 11, Virginia 9

Recruiting New 2025 WR offer in California

I mentioned this name in my recruiting notes thread earlier. Now an offer has happened.

2025 three-star ATH Dylan Robinson has received an offer from Notre Dame. The Irish are recruiting the La Verne (Calif.) Bonita product as a wide receiver. He attends the same school as 2025 LB target Noah Mikhail, so Notre Dame's had a chance to see him a few times now.

Robinson has been recruiting as a wide receiver or defensive back depending on the college program. Per MaxPreps, Robinson caught 22 passes for 514 yards and six touchdowns as a junior.

His relatively short offer list also includes UCLA, Utah, Washington, Arizona State, Penn State, Kansas and Boise State.

Need a little help: Knoxville restaurant recommendations

So my daughter has settled on the University of Tennessee. Being from Michigan, this is a little bit of a change, but my daughter and I will be in Knoxville May 13-15th so that I can check out the school since I was not able to make the trip when she did her tour. We are staying at The Tennessean, could anyone recommend some good/great restaurants to eat at on the 14th?

Much appreciate any help anyone can provide.

ESPN: College sports leaders in deep talks to settle NIL antitrust case vs. NCAA

New story from Pete Thamel and Dan Murphy at ESPN:

The leaders of college sports are involved in "deep discussions" to reach a legal settlement that would likely lay out the framework for sharing revenue with athletes in a future NCAA business model, sources told ESPN.

The NCAA and its power conferences are defendants in an antitrust class action lawsuit, House v. NCAA, which argues that the association is breaking federal law by placing any restrictions on how athletes make money from selling the rights to their name, image or likeness. The case is scheduled to go to court in January 2025. If the plaintiffs win at trial, the NCAA and its schools could be liable to pay more than $4 billion in damages, which has motivated many leaders across the industry to seek a settlement.

Sources indicated that a turning point in the discussions, which have been ongoing, came last week in the Dallas area, where the power conference commissioners, their general counsels, NCAA president Charlie Baker, NCAA lawyers and the plaintiffs' attorneys met. (They chose the Dallas area because they were already there for the College Football Playoff meetings, which were held in that area last week.)

While sources stressed that no deal is imminent, details about what a multi-billion-dollar settlement could look like are expected to be shared with campuses in the near future. There are myriad variables to get to the finish line and still some obstacles and objections at the campus level, but sources indicate that progress has ramped up in recent weeks.

Recruiting Rapid-fire notes ahead of tonight's Heat Index update

I'm working on fully updating The Heat Index tonight, which will be shared on the homepage tomorrow morning. But here's a quick rapid fire through some of the noteworthy updates for the 2025 class targets.

• Notre Dame has one cornerback spot remaining in the 2025 class following the commitment of Dallas Golden. I like Notre Dame's chances to land Mark Zackery for that spot better than Trystan Hayes.

• The defensive line name to know right now is Jalen Wiggins. The Irish checked in on the Florida commit last week and aren't pushing hard yet, but they're trying to create an opportunity there.

• A couple of linebacker targets have official visits schedule: Madden Faraimo for June 7-9. Gavin Nix for June 14-16.

• WR Talyn Taylor has an official visit scheduled for June 14-16.

• Notre Dame is also showing interest in 2025 WR Dylan Robinson. Irish are considering an offer there as they make sure they have options at the position.
