Recruiting Intel: Where ND stands with 2025 targets following Grill & Chill visits

Notre Dame turned up the creativity for its Grill & Chill recruiting event Sunday on campus. The Irish made a push for some of its top targets in the 2025 class by giving them more than a typical campus tour and meetings with the coaching staff.

In addition to a grilling competition, the Irish recruiting staff organized a number of different games from more traditional — dodgeball, knockout, home run derby — to more unique — a blindfold donut game, a balloon cup game. Don't ask me the rules on the latter, but I've heard the games added a nice wrinkle to the event and created some competitive scenarios with a light-hearted feel.

Before I get into the visitors on Sunday, I'd be remiss if I didn't include some intel on four-star QB Deuce Knight, the top-dual threat quarterback in the 2025 class and Notre Dame’s top priority at the position. Knight spoke with Charleston Bowles following visits to Notre Dame on Thursday and Ole Miss on Friday, so don’t miss that story.

Coming out of the weekend, there’s some confidence coming out of Notre Dame that the Irish may have taken the lead in Knight’s recruitment. I’m not ready to make a Rivals FutureCast prediction for Notre Dame, but I’ve started to at least consider doing so for the first time.

There were so many recruits who visited, so I don’t necessarily have a lot of information for each individual. But in gathering intel, these are the recruits I feel Notre Dame leads for at the moment:

RB Justin Thurman

I still like my previous FutureCast prediction for Notre Dame with Thurman.

OT Owen Strebig

I still like my previous FutureCast prediction for Notre Dame with Strebig.

OT Matty Augustine

Notre Dame’s really surged for Augustine since he received an offer following his Lineman's Challenge performance at ND in June. The Irish are still sitting in a good spot following recent offers from Alabama, Florida and Miami.

WR Jerome Bettis Jr.

It’s unclear who Notre Dame’s top competition is for Jerome Bettis Jr. as the Irish still appear to be the frontrunner for the son of the legendary former Irish running back.

WR Talyn Taylor

Notre Dame has a proximity connection to Taylor, but I don’t think that’s going to be the biggest pull. The Irish are battling the likes of Georgia and UCLA, so how he can be used in ND’s offense will need to be a big selling point.

ATH James Flanigan

Notre Dame’s evaluating Flanigan as both a tight end and defensive end these days. The Irish would be glad to have him and figure out his position later. Notre Dame continues to be in a good spot with the son of former Irish defensive lineman Jim Flanigan.

LB/DE Dominik Hulak

The Irish have always been a top contender for Hulak, who Notre Dame started to consider as a potential vyper recruit. ND’s coaching staff gave him a look at the defensive end spot during an evaluation camp in June and liked what it saw. He’s high on the Irish too.

S Ethan Long

Long made his third visit to Notre Dame since the start of April. He impressed at a Notre Dame camp in June and did so again during this past weekend’s visit. Notre Dame would love to have Long and Greenwich (Conn.) Brunswick teammate Matty Augustine both in its 2025 class.

Recruiting Cam Williams on return trip to Notre Dame: ‘It’ll never really get old'

Notre Dame 2024 wide receiver commit Cam Williams was on campus Sunday for Grill & Chill.

Williams, a four-star according to Rivals, is ranked as the No. 49 overall player in the 2025 recruiting class. He’s currently listed as the No. 20 wide receiver and No. 2 player in Illinois.

Before his senior year starts at Glen Ellyn (Ill.) Glenbard South, Williams told me he plans to wrap up in December and arrive as an early enrollee at Notre Dame in January. He believes the opportunity to earn a head start is too good to pass up.

“That’s what’s important,” Williams told Inside ND Sports. “Coming in June, obviously you’re eventually going to learn, but why not get ahead and learn what you can and become more acclimated to the school.”

During Sunday’s cookout, Williams said he spent plenty of time answering questions from visiting recruits’ parents. He talked about his decision process and why he believes Notre Dame is building something special with this coaching staff.

“They hear this from everyone but, ‘Everybody’s journey is different,’” Williams said. “When it comes to why Notre Dame it’s kind of hard to describe that true feeling to them because its like I was there [and] I pulled the plug.”

Talyn [Taylor], Jerome [Bettis Jr.] and those guys, they all have offers from here so it’s kind of just reminding them don’t be so quick to not acknowledge or consider a place like this, everybody knows it has a lot to offer.”

The 6-foot-2, 180-pound wide receiver is set to begin his season on Aug. 25. He plans to be at Notre Dame’s game against Ohio State and other home matchups throughout the fall. He told me it’s a big year for the Irish because of the fanbases’ expectations.

Below is Williams pictured inside Notre Dame Stadium with Taylor, Notre Dame 2024 quarterback commit CJ Carr and wide receivers coach Chansi Stuckey.

Recruiting Catching up with 2025 four-star QB Deuce Knight after visits, transfer

I spoke with Notre Dame 2025 four-star quarterback target Deuce Knight on Sunday evening. The 6-foot-4, 190-pound quarterback visited the Irish earlier this week and also visited Ole Miss on Saturday.

Knight said the Irish made him feel welcomed during his campus tour, practice and individual meetings. Head coach Marcus Freeman, quarterbacks coach Gino Guidugli and offensive coordinator/tight ends coach Gerad Parker reassured him he's their No. 1 priority.

"They said they're not taking anybody until I'm ready," Knight told Inside ND Sports. "That's one thing I like about them ... Coach Gino and coach Freeman let me know I've been the guy ever since they offered me."

Thursday was Knight's first visit to campus with his mother. He said his mother really enjoyed her conversations with Freeman and recruiting coordinator Chad Bowden. Knight said family is very important in his decision and his mother said Notre Dame's the best university she's ever seen. Knight echoed the same sentiment.

"It's the best campus I have ever seen," Knight said. "They definitely made me feel at home. You can tell how successful they want to be. I noticed they were showing me different people, not even football players. I got to meet teachers in the Mendoza College of Business and Chad put me on FaceTime with Tom Mendoza. They definitely want you to be successful after football. I will do that right there."

Knight said his Ole Miss visit went well and said he feels like head coach Lane Kiffin and the Rebels' staff is very like-minded to himself.

Before he makes a decision, Knight plans on waiting to watch his top schools this season.

"That's a big thing," Knight said. "I want to see how Sam [Hartman] plays, how they respond to all the adversity they might have and see how coach Gino coach them up when they mistakes."

Knight is also transferring to Nashville (Tenn.) Lipscomb Academy for his junior season.

Keep in mind, Knight told @Adam Gorney at OT7 Nationals in June that Tennessee and Notre Dame had separated themselves as his top two schools. This moves puts him closer to the Volunteers and head coach Josh Huepel.

“I’m very excited to prove why I’m one of the best in the nation," Knight said on the move.

Recruiting 2025 DE Israel Oladipupo enjoys camaraderie at Notre Dame’s Grill & Chill

Notre Dame 2025 defensive end prospect Israel Oladipupo had all positive things to say about the Irish's Grill & Chill recruiting event when I spoke to him on the phone Sunday night.

The Noblesville (Ind.) High is newer to football than other recruits but caught the attention of defensive line coach Al Washington at June's Evaluation Camp I.

Oladipupo was very transparent and clear with Washington's message to him on Sunday.

"He was talking about how well I did during the camp in June and that's what got me the invite to come back today," Oladipupo told Inside ND Sports. "They're looking forward to seeing me play this season because since last year was my first real season playing football, I don't have that much film. I was able to like put myself out there at all these camps and now all he wants is for me to show myself on that football field and make it show on film."

After working out for Washington and defensive assistant Nick Sebastian last month, Sunday offered Oladipupo more time with them. He learned about their competitiveness and personalities through dodgeball and knockout games.

"They're basically player's coaches ... somebody you can go up to either with football or something else you're going through," Oladipupo said. "They're willing to coach you and tell you anything about life. Their somebody that I know I can go to in case I have questions regarding either football or something personally."

The 6-foot-3, 220-pound weakside defensive end said his favorite moment of Sunday was cooking with his assigned group of recruits on the grill. Oladipupo was in charge of the corn and mushrooms while others handled the steak.

"At the end, the recruits got into a little competition on who knows how to grill the best," Oladipupo said. "Personally, I think my team got snubbed because ours was the best out there. All the judges believed our food was good but somehow we got snubbed."

Oladipupo, who is currently unranked by Rivals, reports six total offers from Akron, Ball State, Bowling Green, Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Miami (OH) and Western Michigan. He's also receiving interest from Notre Dame, Penn State and Purdue.

"It was really fun out there," Oladipupo said. "It was a great experience being around all that talent and all these four-stars and three-stars ... [it] made me feel better about myself."

Recruiting Notre Dame 2025 DT target Jarquez Carter raves about Grill & Chill

During Notre Dame’s Grill & Chill recruiting event on Sunday, Irish 2025 defensive tackle target Jarquez Carter was one of many in attendance.

I spoke with Carter following his trip to see how his first visit to campus played out. The Irish offered in May and Carter had his first opportunity to meet the coaching staff and see the program atmosphere.

“It felt great, I like the campus a lot,” Carter told Inside ND Sports. “It felt real good just walking around the campus for the first time … and just how big it was. It was a beautiful campus.”

Although he’s currently unranked by Rivals, Carter is planning on a big junior season at Newberry (Fla.) High. The 6-foot-2, 266-pound defensive tackle had 78 tackles and 10 sacks last season.

Defensive coordinator Al Washington is Carter’s primary recruiter and this weekend was their first time around each other. The two played their fair amount of competitions but also made time to sit down and discuss his recruitment and what Washington wants to see on tape this season.

“He was fun and entertaining because he played some games with us today,” Carter said. “We talked a lot of football. He was telling me what he liked about me and is trying to get me to come back down.”

Visiting for a game this season is something Carter is interested in, but no date is set. He could return with close friend and Notre Dame 2025 defensive tackle commit Davion Dixon.

Another person Carter made time to discuss was head coach Marcus Freeman. With several recruits present, Freeman made sure to chat with Carter who described Freeman as a people’s person.

The Newberry (Fla.) High reports 10 total offers including Notre Dame, Miami (Fla.), Penn State, South Florida and UCF.

He visited UCF on Friday and Florida State on Saturday but was pretty honest in our conversation that Notre Dame felt different because it involved the entire university including football and academics. Carter said his trips to UCF and Florida State were strictly football.

Recruiting Notes on 2025 four-star S target Ivan Taylor after Grill & Chill

I just got off the phone with Notre Dame 2025 four-star safety target Ivan Taylor. It sounds like the Irish knocked it out of the park with Taylor during Sunday's visit at Grill & Chill.

The 5-foot-11, 170-pound recruit attends Winter Garden (Fla.) West Orange and is ranked as the No. 125 overall player in the 2025 class.

"It was definitely special," Taylor told Inside ND Sports. " We had great one-on-one conversations."

Taylor said safeties coach Chris O'Leary spoke about using him a little bit of everywhere and maximizing his versatility. Head coach Marcus Freeman also spent a lot of time with Taylor and according to Taylor, Freeman has already separated himself from other head coaches in Taylor's recruitment.

"A lot of head coaches, they'll talk to you every once or twice and then they have to go on to other people," Taylor said. "Coach Freeman treats me like one of his own. He talks to me as much as he can ... he gives me a whole bunch of love. I talked to him not only just about football but about life as well."

Taylor holds 12 total offers including Notre Dame, Alabama, Florida, Florida State, Michigan, Penn State and USC. He said he plans on majoring in business.

Although he's just entering his junior season, Taylor said he already plans to schedule an official visit to Notre Dame when the time comes. He said the Irish are in his top three schools.

Basketball MBB: Rising 2025 SF prospect E.J. Walker schedules unofficial visit for Aug.

Notre Dame men's basketball plans to host 2025 small forward prospect E.J. Walker on Aug. 26. I heard directly from Walker on Monday afternoon and he confirmed that date.

Walker, a 6-foot-7, 225-pound small forward, is currently unrated and unranked according to Rivals. However, he's up to 20 total offers including Arizona State, California, Minnesota, Ohio State, Purdue, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Xavier and Virginia Tech. He’s also receiving interest from Cincinnati, Indiana, LSU, Louisville, Michigan State, Missouri, Texas and Virginia.

Walker’s primary recruiter thus far has been Notre Dame associate head coach Kyle Getter. The Irish monitored him this spring and summer and now plan to further their relationship when he steps foot on campus. He may receive an offer during his visit, or head coach Micah Shrewsberry and his staff may wait and evaluate him into his junior season this winter.

This spring, Walker competed on the Nike EYBL grassroots basketball circuit with Brad Beal Elite. In July, Walker played on the Adidas 3SSB grassroots basketball circuit with Midwest Basketball Club. He attends Erlanger (Ky.) Llyod Memorial.

He told me he's set up additional visits to Minnesota on Sept. 9 and Missouri on Oct. 7. He's already visited the Gophers once this summer. Wisconsin also hosted him on a visit in June.

Recruiting First Notre Dame visit an eye-opener for 2025 safety target JaDon Blair

After picking up an offer in the spring, Notre Dame 2025 safety target JaDon Blair made his way up for a campus visit this weekend. Blair actually told me he was on site inside Notre Dame Stadium on Saturday for Notre Dame's practice.

Safeties coach Chris O'Leary told Blair at the beginning of his trip he sees similarities between his game and Kyle Hamilton's. At 6-foot-4, 180-pounds, Blair is taller than ordinary safeties. He looked thin up close on Sunday morning but he's only entering his junior season and has ample time to add weight.

Blair said the visit was a great introduction to the university. He learned a lot about the football tradition but also the academic prestige he'd heard about Notre Dame from afar.

"Notre Dame was amazing," Blair told Inside ND Sports. "Getting to view the facilities and the campus a little bit and see the competitive nature of Notre Dame and see what they have to offer."

The Winston-Salem (N.C.) Mount Tabor product said director of recruiting Chad Bowden had an excellent slate of competitions, games and different events to help each recruit bond with one another and the Irish coaching staff.

One of the recruits Blair said he connected with was 2025 safety target Ethan Long. Blair said the two met briefly at Wake Forest earlier this year but really spent their first actual time with each other on Sunday.

"I can just feel like [a] connection between me [and] him and like in our games is similar,' Blair said. "Me and Ethan, I feel we could be really good together and just talking to him, he's my dude. I feel comfortable talking to him and discussing things."

Although he's only made one visit, Blair said the Irish uniform felt different than others he's put on.

"It was something special I got to do because not everybody gets to do that," Blair said. "Not everybody's in the situation that you're in. I felt very blessed to be able to do that. I could feel it when I walked onto the field and the uniform I could feel the atmosphere [and] the crowd, even though there wasn't anybody there. I could just feel the energy."

Blair holds 15 total offers including Notre Dame, Louisville, Miami (Fla.), Maryland, Penn State, Virginia Tech and West Virginia. He told me he's setting up a date now to return for a game this fall.

Recruiting 2025 RB Daniel Anderson on Notre Dame visit: 'It was really amazing'

I chatted with Notre Dame 2025 four-star running back target Daniel Anderson Sunday evening before he headed back home after Notre Dame's Grill & Chill recruiting event.

Anderson, now a four-star according to Rivals, received his Irish offer as an unranked prospect in June after Irish Invasion. He is currently ranked as the No. 2 player in Arkansas and No. 15 running back in the 2025 recruiting class.

The 5-foot-11, 195-pound recruit attends Bryant (Ark.) High and said his return to campus went well. Anderson was a little caught off guard by his offer last month, so this visit he came in more prepared to speak with running backs coach Deland McCollough.

"I really enjoyed having a talk with him because he explained a lot about his running back style and how he likes to set up his program and the way he does things," Anderson told Inside ND Sports. "I really enjoy getting to know that side of him and see how like [and] what I will be getting into."

Anderson told me head coach Marcus Freeman gave a speech to all the visiting recruits and their families earlier in the day that focused on the 4-for-40 plan. Anderson, who holds a 4.0 GPA, said Freeman's presentation truly resonated with him.

"It would set me up for success in my future," Anderson said. "He really went into depth and explained the percentage of graduates and the money that could be made going to Notre Dame as a graduate and the money that could be made leaving Notre Dame and the opportunities that it could bring."

Like many recruits I've spoken to so far, Anderson credited recruiting coordinator Chad Bowden for his setup and leadership throughout the day.

"It was really amazing," Anderson said. "I had honestly a great time there with all the games they had out and it was so organized getting to play all of them and make [a] connection with other recruits."

Notre Dame is one of three Power-Five schools on Anderson's list of offers. He also has offers from Arkansas State, Long Island, Mississippi State and Tennessee. He also is receiving interest from Ole Miss and visited the Rebels on Saturday.

Football Quick notes on LB Jack Kiser

Just got back from post-practice interviews with the Irish linebackers, DC Al Golden and grad asst/LBs coach Max Bullough. I spent most of my time with Jack Kiser. ... I'll have a full story on him later this weekend, but a couple of nuggets. ... He already got his undergraduate degree and master's in four years. Had no classes this summer and will take non-degree-seeking load in the fall, so he can focus more on football. If you read my story on my projected breakthrough players, you know I'm high on Kiser for this season. ... He's playing much more of an inside role this year, but has some outside roles in various packages. ... He's very excited about the schematic and philosophical tweaks Al Golden has made this offseason. ... He mentioned the reason he didn't play in the Blue-Gold Game April 22 was a broken toe suffered in a scrimmage the week before the BGG. Wasn't cleared until mid-June and initially had to wear a protective boot. Has been 100 percent since then. Said the extra time to focus on football this summer helped him put on the good weight he needed to be primarily an inside linebacker. ... Lots more content to come later this afternoon, including our Inside ND Sports Podcast. ... If you have any questions you'd like to hear us answer all the while mispronouncing your name (maybe), you might still be able to sneak one in.

Football Transcript: Al Golden's interview session after Friday's practice

Notre Dame defensive coordinator Al Golden spoke to writers for 16 minutes following Friday's practice, the third of preseason camp. Here's a transcript of the conversation that's been lightly edited for clarity. Questions may be paraphrased.

AL GOLDEN

JD Bertrand, Marist Liufau and Jack Kiser: that’s as knowledgeable a LB trio as you can get, isn’t it?

“Sure is. It’s a blessing to work with them. I know Max [Bullough] feels the same way. Coach [Mike] Moon feels the same way. You can challenge them every day, not just in terms of the assignments and alignments but also to improve their technique. All of them have done that. Marist, we’ve been challenging him in zone coverage. Because we know he can rush the passer and we use him to do that a lot on third down. But just to be a better zone player, and he’s really responded. He’s gotten better. Just one example, but it’s a very mature group. When you’re not telling them where to align and what their assignment is, then you can really drill down. That’s the biggest difference. The NFL, you’re drilling down constantly because most of those guys come ready. They know if you don’t know the assignment, you’re gone.”

Have Liufau and Kiser flipped roles?

“No, they’re all interchangeable. They have different roles whether it’s base, nickel or third down. So they all have different roles based on that.”

But is Liufau playing more outside as opposed to last year?

“I don’t know if that’s true. Maybe because of where we are in the installs you’re seeing that.”

But they’re flexible enough to move them around?

“No doubt. I don’t even ask anymore. They’ll sometimes do it by themselves. I don’t worry. I want them to make sure they’re comfortable in it, that we can handle it. Now the younger guys, we kind of slot. We’ll slot them, so if the opportunity arises where we need them to start, they know exactly what to do and how to do it.”

Who is emerging among the young guys?

“There’s three groups. Clearly Zig [Nolan Ziegler] and [Jaylen] Sneed in the spring were like, ‘Let’s go.’ I know they’ve been dinged up a little bit. Those questions are for the head coach. It was good to get Sneed back out there today, because I was like, ‘Whoa, OK. Now he’s where he was in the spring.’ Those guys are right there. To us, it’s not like the starters. It’s who’s playing? Who’s going in the game? So those guys are going in the game. And then you have the freshmen that are fighting to be in that group. I’m pleased with them as well. Hopefully we’ll just keep improving and we’ll have three levels of depth.”

Where would you like to see Sneed settle in?

“He’s the rover in base. He’s natural at that. He’s the will in our 4-2 nickel. Then he has the ability to pressure or to line up on the edge on third down. That’s really what he does. We’re trying to get him going in those things, and really at the end of the year that’s what he did for us. It was awesome.”

What does the challenge from Freeman to get more reps for young reserves look like to you?

“Sometimes the guys are like, ‘Well how come I’m not out there?’ You always have to tell them the why. It’s a long season, and I talk to you guys all the time about vertical and horizontal depth. Vertical depth, yeah, we want to have two deep. But we also need horizontal depth. We need defensive linemen that can play a 3-technique or an end. We need linebackers that can play different spots. Thank goodness for guys like Harp [Thomas Harper] and C-Lew [Clarence Lewis] that can play nickel safety, nickel corner. We have to build depth, because you can’t take 100 guys on the road. That’s one thing. The other thing is just we are preparing for those moments. We don’t want it just to be Rylie [Mills] talking to Howard [Cross III] all the time. We need Rylie talking to Jason [Onye]. We need Howard talking to Gabe [Rubio]. I can go on down the line. We have to make sure that we’re really strong no matter who is in the game at a certain point in the game, if there’s an injury that has occurred or if you have an extended period of time where you had some attrition.”

What have you seen from the vyper candidates?

“I think you guys know how I feel about Fosk [Isaiah Foskey]. I love him, love his family. But I think the biggest thing is these guys have made us excited about them. That’s probably the best way to say it. You can dwell on the loss or you can turn your attention to, ‘OK, let’s see what these guys do.’ Jordan Botelho in the 260s now. When I first got here, I think he was transitioning from a 215-pound rover. You guys that have been around probably know better. 260s now. What Junior [Tuihalamaka] has done. You’ve got [Joshua] Burnham. And obviously we’re working some of the younger guys, Boubacar [Traore] and those guys. What they’re doing excites us. I know a guy that’s off the beaten path who’s made so much progress is Josh Burnham. Just physically and the commitment that he’s made. We’re excited about his progress.”

Burnham’s had a full year to transitioned, right?

“Yeah. You ever see him, though? That is a physically great-looking kid. And now he’s in the (2)50s and he’s still lean and can run. He can play some end. He can play some vyper. So that’s exciting.”

Basketball MBB: Notes on 2024 PF target Garrett Sundra, conversation with AAU HC before his OV

Notre Dame men's basketball is expected to host 2024 power forward target Garrett Sundra on his official visit next week. Sundra is expected to arrive Monday evening and spend Tuesday and Wednesday on campus.

Sundra is down to Notre Dame, Butler, Miami (Fla.), Providence and Virginia Tech. He took an official visit to Butler last November and has also taken an unofficial visit to Virginia Tech.

The 6-foot-10, 200-pound power forward attends Fairfax (Va.) Paul VI and was upbeat in May when talking about the Irish, head coach Micah Shrewsberry and Catholic connection between his family and the university. He projects as a stretch four in Notre Dame's offense.

“Coach Shrews is a great coach and I enjoyed watching him throughout the season,” Sundra told Inside ND Sports previously. “I think everyone saw how good of a coaching staff Penn State had because of their success towards the end of the season.”

I sat down with Sundra's Nike EYBL grassroots basketball head coach, Bryan Hogg, earlier this week to learn more about his time coaching Sundra on Team Takeover.

"First and foremost they are getting a great kid who’s also a very good player and student," Hogg said. "They’re getting a team-first guy who also has the ability to open games up with his shooting and decision-making. A player that will continue to get better and better every year he’s on campus."

Hogg first met Sundra during his eighth-grade year. Sundra started playing for Hogg that next year at the 15U level and Hogg said he's one of the most coachable players he's ever come across.

"You could see the potential then," Hogg said, "He had nice size, a good feel for the game and a nice touch from the perimeter. You knew once he got to high school and hit the weight room he [could] be a Division I prospect ... he is the true definition of a team guy. Whatever he needs to do to impact winning he would do."

Sundra is not currently rated or ranked by Rivals.
