Coach Freeman and Coach Stuckey need to put a stop to this

“I see all the [social media] posts, everything I'm tagged in,” the 6-foot-4, 205-pound sophomore wide receiver said Friday after practice of the outside expectations. “And I'm just like, ‘You know, it's in God's hands at this point.’

This is a quote attributed to Merriweather, and no good ever comes from diving into social media. If I was his coaches, I’d direct him to stay away from it.

Recruiting On 2025 TE commit Nate Roberts

I wanted to get some more information before bringing this to the board, and now we've reached that point.

I don't anticipate 2025 tight end Nate Roberts staying committed to Notre Dame much longer. It's pretty surprising that it's gotten to this point less than two months after he verbally committed to the Irish, but here we are.

Oklahoma has been continuing to make a big push for him, and he started reporting other scholarship offers from Nebraska and Florida recently.

Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables even name dropped Roberts' high school as one that uses multiple tight ends in formations during his Aug. 1 press conference. Roberts was also working out with Oklahoma 2025 QB commit Kevin Sperry recently. The two live within an hour from each other and Norman is about in the middle of them.

I'm not certain that Roberts will immediately flip to Oklahoma. My guess is he backs off his commitment and does some re-evaluating.

Notre Dame shouldn't struggle to replace Roberts as ND legacy James Flanigan is someone the Irish are in good shape for as well. But Flanigan isn't as highly ranked as Roberts.

Once Notre Dame was unable to get two tight ends in the 2024 class, it seemed like the Irish would definitely go for two of them in the 2025 class. Maybe that's rubbed Roberts the wrong way. We'll see if he wants to address that at some point. I found it interesting that in the last couple months Flanigan was being referenced as an athlete rather than a definite tight end in Notre Dame circles. Given the situation, it seems like maybe that was an attempt to appease to Roberts.

As always, please keep this premium information here.

Marcus Freeman Transcript following Notre Dame football Saturday scrimmage

Scads of info from head coach Marcus Freeman today. His availability needs to be more frequent during camp, though I love the access to the assistants. ... My game plan it to post a notebook later, than update the depth chart this evening. I'll be on this evening to answer any questions that don't involve math higher than an algebra level.

Recruiting Garcia Jr. lists Irish legacy and 2025 LB target in IMG Academy Football Recruiting Notebook

Rivals National Recruiting Analyst @John Garcia Jr. was on hand for IMG Academy's media day and has notes on a handful of 2024, 2025 and 2026 recruits including Notre Dame 2025 four-star outside linebacker target Nathaniel Owusu-Boateng, the younger brother of former Irish linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah.

"Moving forward, he is looking to continue to get first impressions of new programs, mentioning South Carolina and Notre Dame -- where his older brother starred -- as potential destinations given that IMG has a trio of bye weeks in the 2023 season. The electric linebacker is in no rush to make a final call, though, projecting a college decision closer to his senior season compared to this fall."

Not ringing alarm bells here, but trying to give you an accurate picture of his growth process. Keep in mind he practices against one of the best pair of cornerbacks in the country, which will benefit him in the long run. Still has all the tools to be elite.

Football Quick takes from Notre Dame's 13th preseason practice

After a day off Wednesday, Notre Dame football resumed preseason practice Thursday morning in the Irish Athletic Center and LaBar Practice Complex.

The Irish started practice with some up-tempo 11-on-11, so we got another look at the first-team units for the time being.

The offense lined up with QB Sam Hartman, RB Audric Estime, WRs Jayden Thomas, Tobias Merriweather and Jaden Greathouse, TE Mitchell Evans, LT Joe Alt, LG Pat Coogan, C Zeke Correll, RG Rocco Spindler and RT Blake Fisher.

The defense lined up with DE Nana Osafo-Mensah, NT Howard Cross, DT Rylie Mills, VYP Jordan Botelho, MLB JD Bertrand, WLB Marist Liufau, NB Thomas Harper, CBs Benjamin Morrison and Clarence Lewis and S Xavier Watts and Ramon Henderson.

The special teams drills included ball security/strip attempts and a blocking/coverage pursuit one-on-one setup.

WR Rico Flores Jr. did a nice job of blocking CB Christian Gray in the final segment when special teams coordinator Marty Biagi handpicked matchups. RB Devyn Ford evaded a block from LB Jaiden Ausberry. TE Cooper Flanagan yanked down S Antonio Carter II for a holding penalty on his block attempt.

The rest of the individual drills were fairly uneventful in the first five periods media members were allowed to watch.

Three injured players were working on the sideline: TE Kevin Bauman, WR KK Smith and CB Chance Tucker. Previously sidelined RB Chase Ketterer was back in action.

The suspected knee injury to DE Aiden Gobaira suffered Tuesday night kept him sidelined with a large wrap/brace on his right leg.

A big contigent of scouts were at today's practice with the Washington Commanders, Denver Broncos, Cincinnati Bengals, Houston Texans, Pittsburgh Steelers, Buffalo Bills and Green Bay Packers represented.

We will be speaking with Biagi and specialists in a little bit.

Recruiting Notes on 2025 four-star WR target Derek Meadows before his junior season

Notre Dame 2025 wide receiver target Derek Meadows is gearing up for an expanded role this year at the Las Vegas (Nev.) Bishop Gorman. Last season, Meadows had six receptions for 97 yards and two touchdowns. Now, he's planning to see more targets and see an uptick in production.

I caught up with the 6-foot-6, 179-pound wide receiver to learn about his offseason since he participated in Irish Invasion earlier this summer — where his Irish offer had him jumping up and down after.

“My summer’s been great … on that grind for football season as usual," Meadows told Inside ND Sports. "I practice Monday through Friday with the team and on Saturdays, I've also been training with my coach Marcus Nash.

At the time of Irish Invasion, Meadows was unrated and unranked. Now, Rivals has Meadows as a four-star prospect and rank him as the No. 5 player in Nevada for the 2025 recruiting class.

Since the contact period began Aug. 1, Meadows has been in contact with wide receivers coach Chansi Stuckey. He called Notre Dame one of his dream schools during our conversation and highlighted Stuckey's NFL background as a strong driving force.

“Coach Stuckey has been to the top level with the best of the best players and that makes him part of the 1%," Meadows said. "I appreciate the time he spends trying to get to know me.

Meadows reports eight offers including Notre Dame, BYU, Colorado State, Hawaii, Nevada, UNLV, Utah and Washington. I expect him to try and schedule a game day visit for this season.

Meadows' athletic gifts were evident during his workout in June. You can watch those highlights shot by @Tyler James here. He's also a track star and won the Gatorade Nevada Boys Track and Field Player of the Year award this summer. He won the NIAA Class 5A state championship in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 36.73.

Reading between the lines

In the analysis that we were given this week viewing ND’s full practice, you could not help coming away with the impression that this defense may be really good.
The offense? I defy anyone to view the critique of that unit in an overall positive light. Of course now the day after , the spin starts to roll. We’re not fooled .
ND really needs to bank on freshmen wide receivers. Again ?!
Seriously? The guards are a “work in progress “??
Somehow , I’m guessing that’s not THE message being conveyed at OSU or USC
