Football CB Benjamin Morrison wants to prove freshman season wasn't fluke

I spent some time one-on-one with Benjamin Morrison in June. He opened up about the turning point in his breakout freshman season, the impact Mike Mickens has made on him, his drive to get better and refusal to get complacent.

I think you'll enjoy this one.

“I get frustrated," Morrison said, "when I hear someone say, ‘Yeah, next year you probably not going to get as many interceptions just because they won't go at you.’ But I think that's kind of a slap across the face, because it's possible.”

Football Notre Dame ranked No. 13 in preseason AP poll

Notre Dame's position in the preseason AP poll is the same as its position in the preseason coaches poll: No. 13.

Three of Notre Dame's 2023 opponents were placed in the top 10 of the AP poll: No. 3 Ohio State, No. 6 USC and No. 9 Clemson. No other opponents made the top 25 but four received at least one vote: Pittsburgh, Louisville, Duke and NC State.

Calculating Notre Dame's uptick in physicality into a poll position

There's insight into my poll methodology as I return to submitting a weekly ballot. ... Also insight into why I voted Notre Dame at No. 10, both for the intangible and the tangibles. ... And some interesting stuff from Marcus Freeman on the uptick in trash talk and physicality in practices this training camp.

Basketball MBB: 2026 F Shane Pendergrass excited to follow Notre Dame, Micah Shrewsberry

Notre Dame men’s basketball is showing interest in 2026 power forward prospect Shane Pendergrass. I spoke with the Brandywine (Md.) Gwynn Park recruit to learn more about his connection to the coaching staff and gauge his interest in the Irish.

The 6-foot-8 prospect visited Penn State twice last season while head coach Micah Shrewsberry was with the Nittany Lions. He told me Shrewsberry and director of recruiting Brian Snow have been the coaches that have reached out this summer.

"I’ve spoken with the coaching staff previously at Penn State on a few visits and they were telling me to always work hard and continue to get better every day," Pendergrass told Inside ND Sports. "I am excited to see how coach Shrews is [in] a new environment."

Pendergrass played on the Under Armour Association grassroots basketball circuit with DC Premier and believes his skills fit as a back-to-the-basket and perimeter player.

He recorded several 20+ point performances including scoring over 35 points in a game earlier this month at the Hoop Group Future All-American Elite Camp.

Rivals has not ranked any prospects in the 2026 recruiting class, but Pendergrass holds four offers from Bryant, Norfolk State, NJIT and St. Bonaventure. With three years of high school remaining, his offer list is expected to expand and Notre Dame has built an early relationship.

"With Notre Dame being in a Power-Fve conference, it is very exciting and it would mean a lot knowing that they believe in me to pursue my academic and basketball future at their school," Pendergrass said.

Notre Dame 2025 four-star running back target Tory Blaylock released his top 13 schools list on Saturday.

The Irish made the cut along with Alabama, Georgia, Florida State, Miami (Fla.), Penn State, Ohio State, Oregon, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Texas A&M and Wisconsin.

Blaylock, a 5-foot-9, 170-pound prospect, is listed as an all-purpose back by Rivals. He is ranked as the No. 2 all-purpose back and No. 82 overall player in the 2025 recruiting class.

Notre Dame running backs coach Deland McCollugh offered Blaylock in January. The Humble (Tex.) Atascocita product and four-star recruit has not visited campus during his recruitment.

According to his X (Twitter) profile, Blaylock has visited Alabama, Oklahoma and Tennessee. Blaylock's brother, Travian, is a graduate student safety at Wisconsin.

The Irish already have one running back committed in the 2025 class with four-star Justin Thurman.

Football Inside ND Sports' Notre Dame football training camp depth chart projection

Inside ND Sports' Notre Dame football training camp depth chart projection

I made some slight updates to the depth chart today reflecting the season-ending injuries to Aiden Gobaira and Kevin Bauman, as well as making some tweaks based on info from Marcus Freeman on Saturday and some of the assistant coaches through the week leading up to today's scrimmage. The linebacker depth is most difficult to portray, because it's not linear, but I TRIED to explain it in today's notebook.

Recruiting Notre Dame 2026 LB prospect Tatum Evans ready to excel at new position

A name to know in the 2026 recruiting class is Tatum Evans. The 6-foot-1, 210-pound linebacker has already visited Notre Dame twice — in April for spring practice and for Irish Invasion in June. He's also planning to visit this season even though an official date has not been set.

As a freshman for Grapevine (Tex) High, Evans played defensive end and had 15 tackles, three quarterback pressures, two forced fumbles and one sack.

"I love it," Evans told Inside ND Sports on Notre Dame. "I got the opportunity to talk [defensive coordinator] coach [Al] Golden and he's really great. I love talking with him. I had a great experience. I love the campus and everything. I performed well in the camp."

At Irish Invasion, Evans went through drills led by defensive graduate assistant Max Bullough. He also spent time with defensive line coach Al Washington and defensive assistant Nick Sebastian. Evans, who also camped at Baylor and Texas A&M in the past, said the Irish defensive staff gave him coaching he’d never experienced.

"It's not really something I'd seen before," Evans said. "You can tell the coaches are just like genuine people. I was talking to coach Sebastian before and he's just making jokes, but it was really intentional and personal with coach Bullough and coach Washington."

Rivals has not given ratings or recruits to prospects in the 2026 recruiting class.

Evans doesn't hold any offers and reports interest from Notre Dame and Baylor. His father, Ross, played for the Bears, and Tatum told me he's built a good relationship with the coaching staff early in his recruitment.

Football Transcript: What Chansi Stuckey said following Friday's practice

Notre Dame wide receivers coach Chansi Stuckey spoke to local beat writers following Friday's preseason practice No. 14 for the Irish. Below is a transcript of that conversation. Questions may be paraphrased.

CHANSI STUCKEY

How much deeper is the wide receiver room now compared to 18 months ago?

"It's remarkable. We send out two and a half groups right now, when everyone's healthy, that play at a high level. You have Rico and JG that's come in and they're running with the second team right now because of an opportunity and they're taking advantage of that opportunity. They're going against Ben Morrison sometimes, you know Christian Gray's are really good young corner, and Cam and you know they're holding their own so that's encouraging to see in the slot and outside. I think that builds volumes for our room, and it gives Tobias a break when we need to. There's less of a fall off than there has been in the past. JT, if he needs to come out, and Deion and Matt, who's had a great camp, can go in the game. Chris and JG are getting body types and they bring different things to the offense. So, I think it's cool to be in (Gerad Parker's) shoes with so many different elements that we can do on offense."

What kind of competitiveness has that created?

"I think firstly, it speaks to the culture that the players themselves have built here. The culture of accountability, a culture of competitiveness, and knowing that us as coaches love them and we're going to push them to be great. We have to continue to let them know that hey, we're doing this because I want you to be great. You know, when we get on you it's because the details really, really matter and coming from great programs that our young guys come from they have the mentality to work. So that adjustment there is not huge like at some places. So, I think that identifying the right guy with the right mindset from the right places is so great when they get here in the spring."

What has Jordan Faison done to be able to work with the No. 2 offense the last two days to start practice?

"Jordan just has to continue to develop. Some guys we're holding out for practice to rest and guys have to take reps. He's doing a good job of learning and getting better. That's what I told him, you just need to learn, between learning (the) position, for him to learn the details and just continue to work hard and get better."

He’s unique as a walk-on who has a lacrosse scholarship. Could he contribute this year?

"I mean, he's just a different body type. Not that as unique, as you would say, but he has some great gifts. An elite short area quickness and he comes from a lacrosse background, so he's he used to be in shifty. But again, he just has to keep working."

How deep is this group in terms of guys who can play?

"We have the guys that I have in mind and we're about seven deep right now, which is a great, great luxury and our top seven guys can play anywhere. Our second group can probably push for starting time at another place and that's what you want to create, that lifeline of multiple, multiple guys coming in year-in, year-out that are competitive that can play and that deserve playing time. No matter if you start or not, you still need to warrant putting you on the field and that's what a lot of our guys have done, so that's a great problem to have."

What’s the biggest development in Chris Tyree in the last six months?

"Just understanding football. You know, he's so used to seeing everything out front, back there with the quarterback and now a lot of times his back's turned to the defense. Understanding what a nickel was trying to do a safety's trying to do, recognizing his own man, understanding the details of a split, what kind of route I'm running, what am I trying to sell? Also just understanding concepts and where it needs to be and being there on time has been the biggest thing and there'll be another jump once he starts playing games of understanding what people are trying to do to him and what's the scouting report on him and how can I break those things and get away with tendencies."

Where has Tobias Merriweather grown and where does he still need to improve?

"Just maturity. Just his mindset is different from last year. He's matured so much. He's taken a leadership role. We had a great summer and like any receiver, even ones who are playing the NFL, there's always room for improvement and route running and understanding there's always, we want guys with a mindset to learn all the time and he has a deep mindset to learn, urge to learn, understanding why and how detailed can I be and that's all I can ask for. The rest will take care of itself. It's the truth of who he is. The work and then results will take care of themselves."

How important is it for you to be able to share the details and technical aspects you learned as a player?

"It's insurmountable. Like I always tell my guys, I'm trying to teach you how to think. It's whatever you had in high school when you come to come to this place, how to think about football. I'm not just running to the line just to get lined up, I have 'this'. Okay, why do I have this route? What are we trying to accomplish? What is the DB doing? If he's outside or inside, head up? What's my near safety doing? Like you have to see all of this stuff in hundredths of seconds and process it and it has to be like that (snaps) and everything has to be on the move. So, if you don't train and think that way, the game is never going to slow down for you, so the goal is to teach them how to think so that the game can slow down, that everything is moving in slow motion. So, that takes time and it takes a willingness but when the guys get it, they get it and it's just like that and then it's beautiful."

Update: Jim Harbaugh's suspension deal with NCAA breaks down

Story from Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports:

For Harbaugh, the negotiated resolution is a signal that the coach acknowledged some sort of dishonesty. The NCAA considers lying to investigators as a Level I violation, the most serious on the organization’s scale. A Level I violation could carry with it a six-game suspension and significant recruiting restrictions, according to NCAA statutes.

Harbaugh’s alleged initial cover-up was worse than the crime itself from the NCAA's perspective. In a notice of allegations sent to Michigan last year, the association cited four Level II violations, including meeting with two recruits during a COVID-19 dead period, texting a recruit outside of an allowable time period, having analysts perform on-field coaching duties during practice and having coaches watching players work out via Zoom.

NEW: Dan Wetzel of Yahoo Sports is reporting that the suspension agreement has fallen apart and will move further into the NCAA disciplinary system, likely in 2024.

The deal still needed approval from the NCAA’s Committee on Infractions. Many believed that would be a formality.

However, hurdles arose and the deal is now off, sources said.

Football Quick takes from Notre Dame's 14th preseason practice

Notre Dame football was back in action Friday for its 14th preseason practice. The Irish swapped out shoulder pads for spider pads for a lighter day of hitting.

Like they did yesterday, the Irish ran through a handful of 11-on-11 plays with first-team and second-team offense and defense.

First-team offense: QB Sam Hartman, RB Gi'Bran Payne, WRs Jayden Thomas, Tobias Merriweather and Jaden Greathouse, TE Mitchell Evans, LT Joe Alt, LG Pat Coogan, C Zeke Correll, RG Rocco Spindler and RT Blake Fisher.

TE Holden Staes also worked into the rotation. RB Audric Estime and WR Chris Tyree were dressed but not called upon.

Second-team offense: QB Steve Angeli, RB Devyn Ford, WRs Rico Flores Jr., Matt Salerno and Jordan Faison, TE Cooper Flanagan, LT Tosh Baker, LG Billy Schrauth, C Ashton Craig, RG Charles Jagusah and RT Aamil Wagner.

First-team defense: VYP Jordan Botelho, NG Howard Cross III, DT Rylie Mills, DE Javontae Jean-Baptiste, LBs JD Bertrand and Marist Liufau, NB Thomas Harper, CBs Benjamin Morrison and Jaden Mickey and S Xavier Watts and Ramon Henderson.

CB Cam Hart was back dressed today but not used for this. LB Jack Kiser wasn't used due to the nickel look.

Second-team defense: VYP Joshua Burnham, NG Gabriel Rubio, DT Jason Onye, DE Boubacar Traore, LBs Drayk Bowen and Jaylen Sneed, NB Micah Bell, CBs Christian Gray and Clarence Lewis, S Antonio Carter II and DJ Brown.

Notre Dame then did a quick strip drill before working on kick returns. The first kick return unit was as follows.
Front line: Watts, Gray, Thomas, Bowen and Bertrand
Middle group: Davis Sherwood, Burnham, Flanagan and Estime.
Back line: Ford and Payne

Ford was the primary return guy. Tyree backed him up. Price and Love as well.

Next the defense worked as a group on interception returns before breaking into individual drills.

During offensive individual drills, the line was working on double teams and outside zone.

The injured players working out on the sideline remained TE Kevin Bauman, DE Aiden Gobaira and WR KK Smith. LB Nolan Ziegler remained away from the team for a personal matter.

We'll scheduled to talk to Chansi Stuckey and several wide receivers in a little bit.
