OT- the angels took my mother tonight

May the Lord bless her, keep her and hold her in the palm of his hand.

She was tough as nails so don’t cross her. She was as sharp as a tack so don’t try to fool her. But she had a heart of gold and knew how to treat others with respect. A true humanitarian.

She was truly the best and she taught me so much. For that... I’ll be forever grateful for her teachings.

I also believe that she fired up the troops at halftime. She knew how much our family loved ND so I’m sure she played a part. Obviously that’s just my emotions playing tricks on me tonight but it’s easy to think that way when I’m in this type of state of mind. She passed about an hour after the final whistle. It was a tough day but we were blessed to have her pass with loved ones instead of strangers in a home.

GO IRISH and God Bless

BYU vs ND, Bama, O$U, Clemson....

Hypothetical lines..

ND -2 BYU
Bama -17 BYU
Clemson & OSU -9 against BYU

Still no respect .. I honestly could care less, just thought it was worthy of posting. I could see us beating them by 2-3 touchdowns.

Also, random thoughts..

When Ade Ogundeji committed to us After flipping from Western Michigan, I always thought he was going be to an impact player. He was Just a low ranked 3 Star that need a couple years in the S&C nutrition program.
He started coming on as a RS Soph and has been an impact player on defense the past 2 seasons.
Great find by the staff and glad this young man who seems full of energy and passion is going to be an NFL draft pick this spring.

I can’t say enough about our 1-81 Scholarship athletes and the depth Brian Kelly and staff have built up over the years. Next man in, in most position groups doesn’t seem to be a drop off.
In earlier years it was a huge drop off and we were basically screwed at that position.

Remember when our DT situation 3 or 4 years ago was Jerry Tillery, then after that you had Micah Dew Treadway, Elijiah Taylor as 2nd & 3rd string behind him. Same could be said for examples at others positions too, just was thinking about this and how we keep fresh.
Kudos to the whole 2016-2017 overhaul and change that Bk made to the staff and himself.

Still 2 games to go then the ACC Championship game but I feel something special about this team.

Thoughts on Zeke and Lugg (Sorry it's Long)

I just finished watching the game again, and started to grade the 2 of them out, but stopped just shy of halftime due to time constraints. I finished off the second half without grading and made some notes on each.

Lets start with Zeke. I mentioned yesterday that I felt that Zeke was a 2019 version of Jarrett Patterson. What I meant by that was I thought he had all the tools, but didn't quite have the butt behind him to out-muscle people.

Where I think Zeke needs some work: It was pretty obvious in some pass protections that he was put on roller skates (much like Patterson in 2019). This happened when he was man-to-man with the NT. Part of the problem was him setting up properly because he seemed to be too high and was trying to catch someone that had a full head of steam coming.

For the entire game the NT was shaded off of him, and when we were running the ball to that side he allowed too much penetration. Granted this is probably the toughest block to make for any lineman, and your center has got to snap it first. The problem wasn't getting there, it was allowing the DT too much depth in the backfield. Our RB needs to cut it back behind this block, but he loses momentum when he has to come to almost a complete stop.

I've always made the comment that the center has to get the ball to the QB first, and he had a couple hiccups which is a couple too many. I'm giving him a mulligan on the 2 bad ones, but what I noticed early on in the game while Book was in the shotgun was the ball didn't have any pace on it getting back to him. You could see Book leaning back and waiting for the ball to get there. Zeke cleaned it up later, but the QB needs a crisp snap as to not throw off the timing of everything.

What I thought Zeke did well: Pretty much everything that I listed that he didn't do well, at times he did do well throughout the game. For starters pass protection. There were times where I saw him with a wider base, and in more of a football position, and it worked for him. Right now, Zeke needs to be perfect in his set-up because he's not going to get away with things that Patterson can.

Zeke gets off the ball well! His combo block on Tyree's long run was THEE block that made it happen - perfect execution. There were also a couple plays where he beat the NT shaded to the play side, and he just didn't stop penetration, but he took him out of the play completely - extremely tough to do even for an elite center.

I didn't notice many assignment mistakes where you just said he blew it.

On to Lugg. I did concentrate on Zeke more than I did Lugg, and I'll be brutally honest. He looked a step slow to me, and at times was catching people and allowing too much penetration. I think where that is coming from was he just wasn't quick enough to block a guy in the gap, and he would just step and catch. He didn't do it the whole game, but he did it enough for it to pop out to me. Overall he was pretty assignment sound, but there were times where I felt that he should have gotten off his block with Zeke on the NT and went out to block #21 Surrat. There was one play in particular that had he done this Kyren would still be running. I'm guessing this will get worked on this week, and it wasn't through lack of effort, but rather recognizing what's going on in that split second where he needs to make a decision.

Lugg has talent, and he's proven that, but if you're not 100% confident in what you're doing it's going to slow you down. I'm hoping that he's healthy enough to take more reps at guard this week because he needs to settle in.

It was tough sledding for any team to get a run game going because as I had thought they were going to sell out to stop it. For most of the game they played a tight man with 10 defenders within 7 yards of the LOS. On passing downs they were sending 5 and 6. I did think it was a great effort to get 199 yards on the ground. Zeke and Lugg both had a baptism by fire yesterday, and a good game to learn from.

Before the game started, I wondered which of Patterson or Kraemer we would miss more. Kraemer seems to be the guy that is picked on around here despite him grading out as one of the top guards in college football per PFF at almost an 80 grade. I'm not sure about the lack of love for Kraemer, and how some wanted him replaced with Lugg a few weeks ago, however I will say that my initial impression was that we missed him more, and that goes against everything I had thought coming into the game because I think your center is so important.

One last word on Zeke. He was a favorite of mine watching his HS tape. I then wondered once he got to college, and seeing him in person, if he'd ever be big enough to play. I can say that I'm pretty confident that he's going to be holding down the position in the near future.

Football Column: Forget Damage Control. Notre Dame’s Defense Was Dominant

Final word from yesterday’s game. On Notre Dame’s defense locking down an explosive offense for three quarters:

More and more depth=. We can play with anyone

We have all discussed it.... watching multiple D-line units and LBs and dbs coming On and off the field is what we have been missing for the last 15-20 years. It is a big part of competing as a championship team. Every team has injuries. The ability to win during these times of adversity is key. Might be worth an extra win per year.

yesterday- two new lineman start and gain Valuable reps and experience Lugg and Correll will now be able to step in if needed.
Even more exciting is two more defensive players stepping up- Marist- showed some great instincts and played fast. This is a sign that the game is slowing down for him and his abilities are coming out.
Another player flying under the radar, but making plays every game is Justin Ademilola.
If watch games a 2nd and 3rd Time like I do, you will see that this kid is a baller and will start in the future. might have more upside that his brother.

so fun to see how deep we are.

Zeke

Overall, not too bad. First start in a big game and seemed to improve throughout. My concern, as ive seen others also mention, is his size. He couldnt be more than 6'1" or 6'2" and maybe 270 lbs? He is a center, i get that, but looks tiny beside the other guys. Hopefully he can put another 10 or 15 lbs on and keep his skillset as we move forward into 2021 with him as our likely starter.

One of the most impressive defensive plays for the Irish in a long time

This was talked about in another thread, but I thought it would be a good discussion. And needs to be honored.

Was when UNC sealed our DE, and the RB bounced it outside and got the edge. It looked like a easy first down on 3rd if not much much more. But Ogundeji read it, pursued down the line and somehow ran down the RB in the open for little to no gain.

The speed and athletic ability to make that play is something the Irish have lacked in recent years. This was one of the most impressive plays I've seen all year.

What are your underappreciated or overlooked plays by the Irish yesterday. I have one more. But I'll hold it.
