Recruiting Defensive positions ND needs to address the most on Pot of Gold Day

Inside ND Sports chose two defensive positions that make the most sense for Notre Dame to focus increased attention on when it sends out offers on Pot of Gold Day.

Recruiting Notre Dame's Pot of Gold Day produced commitments in three straight classes

In the flurry of offers Notre Dame will extend on Sunday, there will almost certainly be future Notre Dame commitments. Notre Dame's Pot of Gold Day has been more fruitful by the year.

Basketball MBB: Game Thread | No. 5 Wake Forest 72, No. 12 Notre Dame 59 (Final)

After holding on for a victory against Georgia Tech on Tuesday, Notre Dame men's basketball (13-19) returns to action on Wednesday afternoon in the second round of the ACC Tournament in Washington D.C.

The No. 12 seed Irish will take the floor against No. 5 seed Wake Forest (19-12), who ended its regular season with three losses in its last four games, including a 70-65 loss in South Bend on Feb. 27.

Freshman guard Braeden Shrewsberry, Micah’s son, is coming off a 23-point performance, which broke a program record for most points by an Irish freshman in their ACC Tournament debut. Meanwhile, Shrewsberry’s backcourt mate and fellow freshman guard Markus Burton poured in 21 points and eight assists.

Tae Davis and Kebba Njie also played crucial roles in stretches of yesterday’s win, and are expected to round out the starting lineup alongside forward Carey Booth.

In the first meeting, Burton exploded for a career-high 31 points. After trailing by five at halftime, the Irish outscored the Demon Deacons by 10 in the second half and held Wake Forest's leading scorer, Hunter Sallis, to seven points on 2-of-11 shooting.

Sallis, a 41% shooter from the 3-point line, finished the year averaging 18.3 points per game. Sallis was named to first-team All-ACC earlier this week. Kevin Miller, Cameron Hildreth and Andrew Carr are other talented scorers for Wake Forest capable of scoring 15-20 points.

Wake Forest committed 12 turnovers against ND in the first matchup while the Irish only had six. Georgia Tech ramped up its full-court pressure in yesterday’s second half and the Demon Deacons could elect to show similar defensive pressure, either in the full or half-court, and force Notre Dame’s other ball-handlers beside Burton (Davis, Shrewsberry, Logan Imes) to beat pressure consistently.

The winner advances to Thursday’s quarterfinal round, where No. 4 Pittsburgh awaits.

Recruiting 12 Midwestern 2026 offensive prospects that should be on Notre Dame radar

Inside ND Sports selected 12 offensive prospects within the Midwest region that don't necessarily need scholarship offers on ND's annual Pot of Gold Day recruiting event, but have done enough to be firmly on ND's radar and score offers either on Sunday or before their junior seasons.

Recruiting Four-star DE target Damien Shanklin names a top 12

Recruiting 2026 CB Joey O'Brien reflects on Notre Dame visit, inital bond with staff

When Notre Dame football began spring practice last week, one of the youngest recruits on campus was 2026 cornerback Joey O'Brien, a prospect out of Philadelphia La Salle College High School.

The 6-foot-3, 180-pound O'Brien reports early offers from Duke and Toledo and also has interest from Florida State, Maryland, Penn State and Rutgers.

Rivals hasn't assigned O'Brien a rating or ranking yet, but the Irish extended an invitation for him to visit after evaluating his sophomore season film, where O'Brien started at cornerback and wide receiver against some of the top schools in the Philadelphia area, including Malvern Prep (former school of freshman OG Peter Jones) and St. Joseph's Prep (where 2025 LB target Anthony Sacca attends).

Inside ND Sports caught up with O'Brien to learn more about him, how his visit went, why he's interested in Notre Dame moving forward and more.

O'Brien didn't hesitate when saying his favorite part of the trip was seeing the Irish go through practice.

"They set up drills and scenarios that would happen in actual games so the team knows exactly what to do when game time comes," O'Brien said. "Watching practice showed me how fast the game at the next level is. It does not wait for anyone so you need to be at your best every day or the next person is up."

O'Brien said he had meetings with head coach Marcus Freeman, defensive coordinator Al Golden and defensive backs coach/defensive pass game coordinator Mike Mickens. O'Brien said each coach made a strong impression and relayed a similar message.

"All the coaches were very cool and were big on starting a relationship with me. We were talking about how Notre Dame holds you to a high standard ... I can't wait to continue building my relationship with them."

As a defensive back, O'Brien said he plays aggressively and is willing to take risks based on what he's seen on film. He also added that he's a willing tackler in run support.

Moving forward, O'Brien said he's definitely interested in increasing communication with the Irish and returning either this summer or next season for a game.

BAS: Irish sweep Radford with seven-run rally

Notre Dame baseball completed a two-game sweep at Radford on Wednesday with an 11-6 victory. The Irish (11-4) scored 11 runs in Tuesday's win over the Highlanders (5-10).

Notre Dame trailed 6-4 through seven innings but scored seven runs in the eighth inning to avoid an upset loss on the road.

The Irish rally ignited with two outs in the top of the eighth. After center fielder T.J. Williams, who hit a solo home run in the third inning, struck out swinging with second baseman Estevan Moreno and pinch hitter DM Jefferson on third and second base, respectively, shortstop Jack Penney walked to load the bases with two outs.

Designated hitter David Glancy plated the first run of the inning with an RBI infield single. First baseman Connor Hincks walked to score another run. Another RBI infield single by right fielder Tito Flores gave put the Irish ahead 7-6 with three runs scored in the inning. Then third baseman Simon Baumgardt unloaded the bases with a grand slam to give the Irish a sizeable 11-6 lead.

No Notre Dame pitcher logged more than two innings of work with the Irish heading to No. 21 Florida State (15-0) for a three-game series Friday-Sunday. And no Irish pitcher was credited with allowing more than one run in the victory.

Starter Jackson Dennies gave up one run on a solo home run in the first inning. Hagan Ward allowed and RBI single in the third inning during his two innings of work.

Ryan Lynch surrendered a two-run home run in the sixth inning that tied the game at 4. He inherited one base runner from Will Jacobsen, who allowed one walk, threw a wild pitch and forced a fly out and a strikeout before being pulled.

Nate Hardman received his first win in a Notre Dame uniform for pitching the seventh and eighth innings. Two Radford runs scored in the seventh inning to give the Highlands a 6-4 lead. An RBI single by Cameron Pittman plated the first run. Then a sacrifice fly sent home an unearned run following the second out of the inning. Hardman escaped a bases-loaded jam with a fly out to right field.

Radek Birkholz allowed one hit but struck out three to close out the game in the ninth.

Recruiting 2025 DL Javeon Campbell updates relationship with Notre Dame football

Notre Dame football is working this spring and summer to make progress on landing a fourth defensive line commit, and 2025 defensive line target Javeon Campbell has emerged as one of the top options at the position.

Campbell, a three-star per Rivals, is listed as a weakside defensive end, but defensive coordinator Al Golden and defensive line coach Al Washington view him as a three-technique capable of playing inside next to 2025 four-star DT commit Davion Dixon.

As @Tyler James reported on Wednesday, Campbell has set a return visit to Notre Dame for April 13 after visiting on Feb. 1

Inside ND Sports has assigned Campbell a Medium rating on The Heat Index. He reports 14 total offers including Notre Dame, Louisville, Kentucky, Ohio State, Miami (Fla.), Michigan State, Vanderbilt and West Virginia. He is scheduled to visit Georgia this weekend and Michigan on Monday, neither of whom he reports offers from.

I spoke with the 6-foot-6, 230-pound defender out of Frankfort (Ky.) Western Hills to gain his latest thoughts on the Irish and what his priorities are during his next trip to campus.

First, Campbell said he's in daily communication with Golden via text, and added he speaks to Washington over the phone or through text every other day.

"The coaches are amazing ... and the program," Campbell said. "The facilities are more like ... not older but historical. They got a good combination of the historical part of it and the environment too."

Campbell, a two-sport athlete who also stars on the Western Hills boys basketball varsity team, had both of his parents accompany him on his first trip to South Bend and said academics and playing close to home are something in his mind throughout the recruitment process.

"That's just another great thing about Notre Dame," Campbell said."[The] academics are really good. That's what makes him stand out from other colleges."

When he visits in April, Campbell said he wants to see more of Golden and Washington's coaching styles and see how the defensive linemen practice and prepare.

"I'm excited to meet the players and just see how a daily routine is being a player," Campbell said. "Then really just seeing the behind-the-scenes of practicing and the connections with the coaches and players and stuff like that."

In 7.5 games as a junior, Campbell had 14.5 sacks. He is unranked nationally and the No. 33 weakside defensive end in the 2025 class.

Fencing: Irish crush NCAA Regionals

At the Midwest Regional Fencing Championships, ND dominated, winning 5 of 6 disciplines and placing 12 fencers in the top 4. There are no official team scores at the Regionals, but the Irish easily would have won if there were.

National Championships qualifiers are announced Tuesday. It would be a major surprise if ND does not send the maximum 12 fencers.

Notre Dame has won three consecutive National Championships and 5 of the last 6.

Recruiting 2025 DT target Javeon Campbell's visit schedule

The Irish are targeting the 6-foot-6, 230-pound Campbell as a defensive tackle. Campbell also received an Ohio State offer following a visit earlier this month.

Campbell shared the following visit schedule with me:

Recruiting Which 2026 recruits should Notre Dame offer on Sunday

Notre Dame's Pot of Gold event will take place on St. Patrick's Day once again. This year, the offer spree will happen in the 2026 class with close to 100 recruits expected to receive offers.

Notre Dame has only offered 25 recruits in the class at this point, so there's plenty of new targets to choose from.

Who do you want to see Notre Dame prioritize?

Here's the early Rivals100 for the 2026 if you need some inspiration, but I know some of you have great knowledge of the recruits in the areas you live.

BAS: Notre Dame knocks its way to 10-3 win at Radford

Notre Dame baseball took the first of a two-game series at Radford with a 10-3 victory Tuesday in Virginia.

The Irish offense allowed Notre Dame (10-5) to cruise to a comfortable victory with a balanced attack.

Seven players recorded RBIs with only two registering more than one. Both graduate senior third baseman Simon Baumgardt and senior designated hitter Brady Gumpf knocked in a pair of runs each.

Six Irish runners scored with three scoring twice: senior first baseman Connor Hincks, graduate senior right fielder Tito Flores and Baumgardt.

Baumgardt finished 2-for-4 with two doubles as his hits. Hincks hit 2-5 with a double, triple and RBI.

Freshman right-hander Jack Radel made his first career start on the mound. In his fifth pitching appearance of the season, Radel (2-0) completed three scoreless innings, struck out four and allowed one hit.

Junior righty Ricky Reeth pitched the next three innings and surrendered one run on two hits with one strikeout. Sophomore righty Caden Spivey finished the final three innings. He allowed two runs, two doubles, one walk and hit one batter. He also struck out four.

Notre Dame put the game out of reach with a five-run seventh inning. A Tony Lingwedel RBI single started the scoring. Then Lindwedel, a senior catcher, scored on a wild pitch. A Hincks double, Baumgardt double and Gumpf single each plated one run.

Notre Dame and Radford (5-9) will meet again Wednesday at 4 p.m. (ESPN+) at Sherman Carter Memoriall Stadium in Radford, Va.

Recruiting 2025 CB target Trystan Haynes includes Notre Dame in top 6

In a post on X/Twitter, Notre Dame 2025 cornerback target Trystan Haynes released his list of top six schools on Tuesday.

Haynes, a four-star recruit, cut his list down to the Irish, Alabama, Georgia, Miami (Fla.), Oklahoma and Texas A&M.

The 6-foot-2, 175-pound recruit attends Midwest City (Okla.) High, and was offered by the Irish on Feb. 5.

Per Rivals, Haynes is the No. 18 cornerback and No. 205 overall player in the 2025 recruiting class.

Haynes is listed at Medium on The Heat Index. He has not visited Notre Dame yet in his recruitment.

According to MaxPreps, Haynes had 51 tackles, seven pass breakups, three interceptions and three forced fumbles last season. Carl Albert finished 14-0 and won the state championship.

Basketball MBB: Game Thread | No. 12 Notre Dame 84, No. 13 Georgia Tech 80 (Final)

Notre Dame men's basketball (12-19, 7-13 ACC) opens up play in the ACC Tournament on Tuesday with a bout against Georgia Tech (14-17, 7-13 ACC) in the No. 12 vs No. 13-seeded matchup.

The Irish swept their season series against Georgia Tech, winning by a combined 10 points, including an overtime win in Atlanta on Jan. 9.

Freshman point guard Markus Burton, who was named ACC Rookie of the Year on Monday, comes in averaging a team-high 17.5 points per game. He scored 12 and 18 points, respectively, against the Yellow Jackets this season.

Freshman guard Braeden Shrewsberry, Micah's son, took his starting job back midway through the season and finished the regular season averaging 11.3 points per game. He shoots 41% from the 3-point line and scored a career-high 25 points in the first win over Georgia Tech.

Tae Davis, a sophomore forward, is averaging 12.2 points in his last seven games and figures to be an important piece offensively and defensively if the Irish want to make a run this week and advance. Head coach Micah Shrewsberry has previously said Davis is just scratching the surface defensively and believes he can guard all five positions on the court.

Notre Dame's team average of 63.5 points per game is tied with Virginia and ranks No. 344 (out of 351) in Division I this season. However, the Irish eclipsed that team average in five of their last six regular season games, only scoring less (51) at North Carolina.

ND held its opponents to 66.4 points per game, which is slightly over four points less than Georgia Tech's average of 70.7 points per game. The Yellow Jackets' offense is predicated on guard Miles Kelly and forward Baye Ndongo. Kelly scored 25 points and hit seven 3-pointers against the Irish in the first meeting, while Ndongo had 16 and 11 points, respectively, in each matchup.

Georgia Tech won three of its final four games in the regular season, with wins over Florida State, Wake Forest and Miami (Fla.). The Yellow Jackets are coached by Damon Stoudamire, who spent time briefly with Shrewsberry on the Boston Celtics coaching staff.

The winner advances to Wednesday and will play No. 5 Wake Forest at 2:30 p.m.

Basketball WBB: Another finalist nod for Hannah Hidalgo

Release from Notre Dame:

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — After one of the best freshman regular seasons in the history of women's college basketball, Hannah Hidalgo has been named one of five finalists for the Nancy Lieberman Award, which is given to the nation's top point guard.

Hidalgo heads into the 2024 ACC Tournament leading the league in scoring (23.8 points per game) and leading the nation in steals (4.9). She ranks third nationally in scoring.

The 5-6 floor general has had numerous great weeks this season, but last week was certainly one of her best. Hidalgo helped Notre Dame notch wins over No. 5 Virginia Tech and No. 22 Louisville. She averaged 24.5 points per game in the wins and led all players in points, rebounds and assists against the Hokies. She had 20 rebounds on the week, which was the second-most amongst all ACC guards.

The other four finalists for the award are Iowa's Caitlin Clark, Ohio State's Jacy Sheldon, South Carolina's Te-Hina Paopao and Virginia Tech's Georgia Amoore. Skylar Diggins is Notre Dame's sole winner to date (2012 and 2013).

ALSO:

For the third time this season, Hannah Hidalgo is both the ACC Player and Rookie of the Week, the conference announced on Monday. It is the 12th time this season Hidalgo has earned the freshman honors, which is a conference record.

Hidalgo and Co. are coming off of a 2-0 week during which Notre Dame beat two ranked opponents: No. 5 Virginia Tech and No. 22 Louisville. The 5-6 point guard averaged 24.5 points per game over the two contests and had an ACC-leading 9 steals. She also notched 20 rebounds, the second-most by any ACC guard during that span.

On the season, Hidalgo is pacing the conference with 23.8 points per game and the nation with 4.9 steals per game. She finished the ACC regular season with 24 20-point games, five more than anyone else in the league.

Hidalgo is also the only player in the nation averaging at least 20 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals every time she takes the court.

HKY: Drew Bavaro signs one-year deal with NHL's Boston Bruins

Release from Notre Dame:

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — After concluding his senior year with the Fighting Irish, including a career-season with the Irish that included 20 points off 10 goals and 10 assists, Drew Bavaro has signed his first professional contract with the Boston Bruins. The Bruins of the National Hockey League announced Tuesday that they had inked a one-year entry level contract with the blueliner.

“I couldn’t be happier to sign my first NHL contract with the Boston Bruins,” Bavaro said. “Thank you to everyone who has helped me achieve this lifetime goal.”

With his contract, Bavaro will spend the remainder of the 2023-24 season with the Bruins’ American Hockey League affiliate, the Providence Bruins.

In two seasons at Notre Dame, Bavaro appeared in 72 games and tallied 39 points. Most recently, the senior defenseman appeared in all but one game for the Irish and recorded three goals in their final weekend at Michigan. He boasted three game-winning tallies in 2023-24 and had five career game-winners in South Bend.

Bavaro joined the Irish in 2022-23 after a two-year career at Bentley of the AHA. In four collegiate seasons, Bavaro appeared in 124 games and registered 78 career points off 27 goals and 51 assists.

“The past two years at Notre Dame have been a dream come true," Bavaro said. "Playing for Coach Jackson and the rest of the staff is something I will cherish forever and this wouldn’t have been possible without their hard work. I’m excited to see what the future holds.”

Bavaro will report to Providence, Rhode Island, later this week.
