BAS: Allowing 11 runs finally catches up to ND in game one loss to Virginia Tech

Notre Dame's offense overcame the pitching staff allowing 11 runs in a game twice last weeked in its sweep of Tennessee Tech. The Irish weren't that lucky Friday afternoon in Blacksburg, Va., for their ACC opener.

Virginia Tech cruised to an 11-3 victory with the help of eight strong innings from starting pitcher Brett Renfrow. The freshman right-hander allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits, one of which went for extra bases, and one walk. He struck out 10 in his fourth victory in four starts.

The Hokies (9-3, 1-0 ACC) quickly erased a 1-0 deficit in the bottom of the first inning with three runs on an RBI single, RBI double and RBI groundout.

Notre Dame starter Ricky Reeth allowed at least one run in all three innings of his outing. He gave up seven hits and five runs. An RBI double by Christian Martin in the second inning and a double steal that included Sam Tackett stealing home in the third inning provided the scoring.

An RBI single by Martin off freshman Jack Radel gave Virginia Tech a 6-2 lead in the fourth innning. Radel allowed a leadoff triple before Martin hit Clay Grady home.

Notre Dame (9-3, 0-1) cut the deficit to 6-3 in the fifth inning with a sacrifice bunt by senior center fielder T.J. Williams to score senior left fielder Brady Gumpf, but that's all the runs the Irish could muster. Notre Dame didn't register another hit for the rest of the game after Gumpf's leadoff double in the fifth.

Virginia Tech broke the game open in the sixth with a grand slam by Eddie Micheletti Jr. He was the first and only batter senior lefty Ryan Lynch faced after replacing Radel.

The two teams will return to the diamond Saturday at 6 p.m. EST (ACC Network Extra).

Recruiting 2026 OT prospect Carter Scruggs ready to experience Notre Dame this month

Notre Dame 2026 offensive tackle prospect Carter Scruggs has plans to visit the Irish on March 23. This trip comes after Scruggs met offensive line coach Joe Rudolph and defensive coordinator Al Golden at his school, Leesburg (Va.) Loudoun County, during the contact period.

The Irish only have one offer out to an offensive tackle in the 2026 class, Samuelu Utu, but that number is expected to grow this spring and summer.

Scruggs, who is listed at 6-foot-6, 280-pounds, has 13 offers including Alabama, Penn State, Syracuse, Pittsburgh, Virginia Tech and Duke. He is currently unranked and unrated by Rivals.

Inside ND Sports connected with Scruggs before he visited Alabama on Friday (when he received his Crimson Tide offer) to discuss his upcoming visit to South Bend, interest in Irish, early connection with Rudolph and more.

On his upcoming visit to Notre Dame:

"I'm super excited, it's a great opportunity to meet all the coaches [and] see the campus," Scruggs said. "When I first met him (Rudolph), he was a super cool guy. He's fun to talk with. I think he's someone I want to work with."

On Joe Alt's college career and status as a projected first-round draft pick:

"I'm a fan of Joe Alt so it's cool seeing that. I liked watching his game. He's a really good offensive tackle. I think that really shows how good of a program they are and how they can develop me."

On why he expects Notre Dame to be a contender in his recruitment over the next two years:

"What's great about Notre Dame, for me, is they're really good on academics [and] really good football. They check both boxes and it's really, really good."

Scruggs reports a 3.93 GPA and has additional visits lined up to NC State (March 29), Virginia Tech (April 5), North Carolina (April 6), Penn State (April 13), Maryland (April 20) and West Virginia (April 27).

Latest from Dellenger: With College Football Playoff format and future revenue in flux, here's what's on the table

Yahoo Sports' Ross Dellenger has a new story on the latest College Football Playoff discussions. This doesn't sound great for Notre Dame on first glance.

In a nine-hour meeting on Wednesday in Dallas, CFP leaders explored new playoff models that included granting multiple automatic qualifiers to the four power conferences in a 14-team format — an expected move in the SEC and Big Ten’s push to have more access. No final decision was made on a format, but a range of options to expand the AQ structure were discussed by the CFP Management Committee, the 10 FBS commissioners and Notre Dame’s athletic director.

The models are now expected to be further examined and socialized with league leaders.

Multiple iterations of an AQ structure were proposed, granting a varying number of auto bids to the Big Ten, SEC, ACC and Big 12, according to those with knowledge of the discussions. The Group of Five retained its singular automatic qualifying spot in several of the models. As many as 12 automatic qualifiers were discussed in a 14-team field, a playoff that would include byes to the Nos. 1 and 2 ranked teams.

As Yahoo Sports previously reported, the Big Ten was expected to seek as many as four automatic qualifiers for its league and, presumably, the SEC. The meeting was described by executive director Bill Hancock as productive — a sign of compromise and collegiality to modifications to the current format.

From und.com

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Karen and Kevin Keyes Family Head Coach Niele Ivey will serve as an assistant coach for the USA Basketball U18 Women's Junior National Team this summer, the organization announced on Thursday. It will be Ivey's debut as a USA Basketball assistant coach after she served as a court coach at the 2023 USA Women's U19 National Team trials.

Ivey will coach alongside Indiana head coach Teri Moren and South Florida head coach Jose Fernandez. Moren will serve as the team's head coach this summer. They will head to a to-be-determined location for the 2024 FIBA U18 Women's AmeriCup from June 17-23. Team USA is seeking its 11th-straight gold medal.

Ivey is in her fourth year at the helm in South Bend and has accumulated an 82-31 record. She has led the team to back-to-back Sweet 16 appearances over the last two seasons, led Notre Dame to a 2023 ACC regular season title, and was the 2023 ACC Coach of the Year. Prior to taking over the program, Ivey was an Irish point guard and assistant coach for Notre Dame. She is the common link to all nine of the program's Final Four appearances — two as a player and seven as an assistant.
