Basketball MBB: Irish hosting portal forward Tae Davis

Inside ND Sports has confirmed with a source that Notre Dame is currently hosting Seton Hall forward Tae Davis on a visit.

The 6-foot-9, 204-pound Davis entered the transfer portal following his freshman season at Seton Hall. He played in 32 of Seton Hall's 33 games while averaging 13.4 minutes, 2.8 points and 2.8 rebounds per game.

Davis signed with Seton Hall out of Warren Central High in Indianapolis, where he averaged 22.0 points and 10.0 rebounds per game as a senior.

Rivals ranked him as the No. 28 shooting guard and No. 149 overall in the 2022 class, but he was only listed at 6-6 at that point.

When Notre Dame head coach Micah Shrewsberry was an assistant at Purdue, he recruited Davis and his older brother Dre Davis. Dre signed with Louisville and transferred to Seton Hall last offseason.

Recruiting 3 stars/ Player development

First, I would love to have all 4 and 5 star/ top 250 players. But I found something pretty interesting when looking at the 2019 class and those who have contributed.

Here are some Irish contributors who were only 3 star recruits. None were in the top 250 Rivals recruits.
• Kyren Williams - 3 star; obviously a stud at ND/ 5th round pick
• JD Bertrand was a 3 star; at one time top 180 (8/8/17); by signing date not rated at all. His career- multi-year starter.
• Jack Kiser 3 star; Multi-year starter
• Cam Hart - 3 star, but was recruited as WR; now a top notch college corner; multi-year starter.
• Marist Liufau - 3 star; multi-year starter
• NaNa Osafo-Mensah - 3 star; not yet starter but has been and should be solid contributor.

In this same class, there were two other players who ended up being 1st and 2nd round picks, but who would have projected?

• Kyle Hamilton - When he committed on April 24, 2018 he was not rated at all by Rivals. On 8/12/18 he got a 3 star rating. Entered the top 250 as of 8/15/18; Final ranking on January 16, 2019 was ranked 75th best in country and 4 star. Nice job by coaches in getting him before he exploded. First round pick
• Isaiah Foskey was a 4 star but was not in top 250. In fact he was 42nd in state. Second round pick who set Irish sack record.

MLAX All New to Me

I recorded the NDMLAX National Championship Game. Had never before watched a lacross game. The announcers were a little bit helpful, but to appreciate what I am looking at, I will have to learn a ton more. I took my time, like 3 or 4 days to watch the whole game. The drama after Duke tied it was all athletic competition. No need for the announcers. ND's dominance after the tie, again, all athletic competition. And then the win. The team's awesome reaction! The ND fans reaction! The coach and his wife. Man! Was I ever glad I watched it to the end.

For newbies like me. 10 players: 1 goalie, three defensemen,, 3⃣ midfielders, three offensemen. Defenders stay jn their zone, same with offense. Midfielders play both O and D and must be crazy fit. D and O remind one a bit of basketball with more contact. Defenders can use their sticks to disrupt the O player, hit his stick. It appears the stick can hit the O player as incidental contact. Big difference with basketball is how physically the defender can play. Subtle rules with blocking v. pushing. Hits to the head rules are similar to football's.

Great game to watch and will be interesting to learn more about, especially O concepts, strategy, and matchups.

Recruiting New Rivals FutureCast prediction for Notre Dame

This one seemed obvious even while I was away on vacation, but I wanted to triple-check things as I got back in the mix this week.

With four-star DT Owen Wafle out in the 2024 class, the Irish want to replace him with three-star DT Sean Sevillano Jr.

As @Charleston Bowles covered, Sevillano's ready to make a commitment announcement Friday at noon EDT. I'm predicting Notre Dame will be his pick.

Like several of my Rivals colleagues, I'm predicting Wafle will end up at Michigan.

Recruiting Hard work starting to pay off for 2025 S Ethan Long after Notre Dame offer

I just got off the phone with Notre Dame 2025 safety target Ethan Long. The 6-foot-2, 180-pound prospect from Greenwich (Conn.) Brunswick received an offer from the Irish earlier today after a phone call with defensive coordinator Al Golden and safeties coach Chris O'Leary.

Long visited the Irish in April and has made trips to Notre Dame for the last six years. He's cousins with former Notre Dame walk-on and captain wide receiver Austin Webster (2014-18).

"I always loved Notre Dame and when they said you have an offer, it just brought back all those memories of visiting," Long told Inside ND Sports. "I knew all the hard work will pay off [and] it was just truly a blessing. It's really one of my dream schools."

Long had three interceptions, three fumble recoveries, and no catches allowed last season. He helped Brunswick win a state championship last season and plans to repeat as a junior. According to his Twitter, Long has just over a 75-inch wingspan and said he's comfortable using his size to his advantage.

"On top of the way I see the field, I think my length is just another factor," Long said. "Also, my explosiveness and ability to cover, come down and fill the gap."

Rivals has not assigned a star rating or ranking to Long. He reports 17 offers including Notre Dame, Boston College, Duke, Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State and Pittsburgh.

He told me he's planning to camp at Notre Dame this summer.

"I don't want to give anyone any hints but it's definitely a top school," Long said. "My heart is still pumping from it and I can't wait to get back up there."

Recruiting 2024 RB target Kedren Young eager to learn during Notre Dame official visit

I just spoke with Notre Dame 2024 RB target Kedren Young. He's one of five uncommitted running backs Inside ND Sports has listed on The Heat Index. The Irish are searching for a second running back to join four-star all-purpose back Aneyas Williams in their 2024 recruiting class.

Young has his official visit to Notre Dame this weekend, starting Friday and running through Sunday.

The four-star running back attends Lufkin (Tex.) High and has been in contact with running backs coach Deland McCullough since landing an offer from the Irish in January. Young said he appreciates every conversation with McCullough because it's steered toward family and success beyond football. He said it also doesn't hurt that McCullough has NFL coaching experience.

"That's very tight and it's what stuck out to me," Young said. "He already has experience, not even in college but in the NFL, the biggest stage. If he's been a coach in the NFL and won a championship at his position, man ... I just imagine what all he knows about the game."

Young told me academics, offensive scheme and relationships are his three biggest priorities.

After holding initial conversations with McCullough and offensive coordinator/tight ends coach Gerad Parker, Young believes his skills fit Notre Dame's scheme and he'll have plenty of opportunities running the ball and contributing as a pass-catcher with the Irish.

He's also eager to meet head coach Marcus Freeman for the first time.

"Relationships are a big thing," Young said. "Being a player's coach is really going to stick out to any player, honestly. It's going to be exciting to see how he is in person. Not even just football, but outside of football."

Young is ranked as the No. 16 running back in the 2024 class. The 5-foot-11, 210-pound recruit rushed for 1,666 yards and 19 touchdowns last season.

He holds 26 total offers and has official visits set for Texas Tech June 9-11 and Texas A&M June 16-18 following his trip to Notre Dame.

Recruiting 2025 DL Matthew Johnson could be latest in Notre Dame, De La Salle pipeline

I caught up with Notre Dame 2025 defensive end target Matthew Johnson tonight. The 6-foot-5, 220-pound recruit is rated as a three-star prospect by Rivals. He attends Concord (Calif.) De La Salle. Notable De La Salle alumni include Aaron Taylor, Derek Landri, Isaiah Foskey and 2023 tight end signee Cooper Flanagan.

"I was super excited," Johnson told Inside ND Sports following his offer. "Notre Dame is one of the winningest programs in college football of all time so I was honored. We’ve been watching Notre Dame on the big stages, playing for championships and bowl games for as long as I can remember."

Johnson is listed as a weakside defensive end but has experience playing 3-tech and said he can play across the defensive line.

"I’m long and I know how to create separation with my arms and I can work moves off of that in the interior," Johnson said. "On the edge, I can close the distance between me and the tackle in a couple of steps. I can go through you or around you. If I catch you leaning expecting a bull rush, I can go around you and if I catch you sitting back looking for a speed rush, I can just as easily run you over with a long arm or a bull rush."

Although he's never met Foskey, Johnson watched his college career from afar and said his development is indicative of the defensive talent at Notre Dame and other Midwest schools.

"Notre Dame and a lot of those Midwest schools are about as good as it gets as far as the defensive line," Johnson said. "Seeing that a school has produced many great players at my position before me is super important, especially if they also are from the bay and went to De La [Salle]."

Johnson is planning to be the third member of his family to get a college degree and said academics are a huge factor in his recruitment process alongside joining a program with a proven track record of winning.

Johnson holds 11 offers including Notre Dame, Arizona State, California, Oregon, Oregon State, USC, Washington and Washington State.

"I would love to get up to Notre Dame," Johnson said. "I have never been personally but I have heard that it's one of the craziest gameday atmospheres in college football."

Basketball MBB: Report says Micah Shrewsberry interested in Indiana showcase

According to CBS Sports college basketball analyst Jon Rothstein, Notre Dame men’s basketball head coach Micah Shrewsberry is interested in participating in an annual showcase with Butler, Indiana and Purdue.

The Crossroads Classic served as a four-team basketball event featuring Butler, Indiana, Notre Dame and Purdue from 2011-21.

Recruiting Emerging 2025 RB Justin Thurman feeling 'blessed' after Notre Dame offer

I just got off the phone with Notre Dame 2025 running back target Justin Thurman. The Irish extended an offer last Thursday. Thurman spoke with running backs coach Deland McCullough over the phone.

"I was excited and blessed to have the opportunity to play at the University of Notre Dame," Thurman told Inside ND Sports. "He went into conversation about his philosophy and how they run the program there and how he, as a running back coach, runs the running back group."

The 5-foot-11, 183-pound running back attends Tampa (Fla.) Jesuit and had 19 carries for 169 rushing yards and two touchdowns as a sophomore.

Thurman said McCullough's NFL experience is something that stands out about Notre Dame early in the process.

"I would say that's definitely a great part of Coach McCullough," Thurman said. "Being that he has that experience and has that background being in the NFL, overall I think it benefits the players. They're able to learn from his experiences so that they can put themselves in the best position for success."

Thurman hasn't met head coach Marcus Freeman but believes he has the Irish moving in the right direction and said being able to relate to a coach from the same ethnic background is crucial. He also mentioned academics as a priority during his recruitment.

"They're very important in the process," Thurman said. "That's one thing I pride myself on is having high academics and keeping my grades up ... showcasing I'm a guy who can not only perform on the field but also in the classroom too."

Although Rivals has not assigned Thurman a rating or ranking at this time, he holds 11 offers including Notre Dame, Florida, Iowa, Kansas, Kansas State and Tennessee.

He visited Kansas this past weekend and plans to visit Notre Dame for the first time on June 15 for camp.

Recruiting Notre Dame 2025 DT target Christopher Isaiah Campbell rose from adversity

I chatted with Notre Dame 2025 defensive tackle target Christopher Isaiah Campbell last evening. He reported an offer from the Irish Tuesday.

Campbell said he was blown away by the Irish in-person last season while on a game day visit to North Carolina.

“Notre Dame is a very prestigious school and I'm just amazed by getting offered from them,” Campbell told Inside ND Sports. “I’ve been hearing very good things. I went to their North Carolina game last year and I saw that tight end for Notre Dame … he was real good. I saw some of their defensive line, they were putting in work. I felt like, ‘’Man, Notre Dame is a great team.’”

The 6-foot-5, 265-pound defender attends Snow Hill (N.C.) Greene Central. He had 61 tackles including 17 for loss and five sacks last season.

Prior to high school, Campbell played outside linebacker. As a freshman, he only weighed 200-pounds and played defensive end. Now, Campbell pencils in as a defensive tackle.

Growing up, Campbell also played basketball. However, he said the physicality and defensive opportunities football offered meant something more for him.

“I liked how physical it was … in basketball, I never really got that,” Campbell said. “That’s really where my love for the game came from. I’m able to hit somebody and put my hands on somebody and I can just be physically violent with somebody, which I couldn't do in basketball.”

Campbell told me he’s willing to leave North Carolina for college and said academics and how transparent coaches are will be major factors in his recruitment.

Rivals rates him as a four-star prospect in the 2025 recruiting class. He is ranked as the No. 11 defensive tackle in the 2025 class.

Campbell reports 16 offers including Notre Dame, Colorado, Duke, Georgia, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Penn State and South Carolina.

After his recent offers from the Bulldogs and Irish, Campbell’s had to adjust his summer schedule and doesn’t have anything finalized but visiting Notre Dame is on the table.

“About 95% of it is done,” Campbell said. “I'm trying to go to Indiana. I'm trying to see what’s up there. I've been there a few times when I was in AAU basketball, but I'm trying to see Notre Dame. One of my close friends, [2025 defensive end target] Gus Richey, went there for a visit he's been telling me how nice it is and how wonderful it is to be at Notre Dame.”
