What does this quote say about ND QB play under Freeman?

And we didn't have any head-scratching losses to completely inferior teams under Parker's offense. We blew those kinds of teams out. Our only losses were to Ohio State on a last minute touchdown, and on the road against quality opponents in Clemson and Louisville.
I count two head scratching losses there and three poor offensive performances. Parker's offense was inconsistent (at best) against good teams. That may not have been all his fault but he should not have been put in that position.

Leonard’s Shoulder Injury

So if Freeman and Denbrock didn't feel comfortable enough to sub in one of Angeli, Minchey, or Carr after seeing Leonard suffer a signficant injury, can't call run plays and didn't pass well. Then what does that say about the backups? I would hope theyhave the confidence that at least one of them could handle the task of beating NIU. This news isn't making me feel any better.
It usually means the backup is worse.

It's been said and I'll say it again the 2nd and 1 play call was absolutely HORRIBLE

Caleb Williams averaged 7 yards of offense per game more in 2023 than Leonard did in 2022. He didn’t suck at Durham and he didn’t suck at A&M.
Perhaps you're on the hook for his NIL money?
Or...
Perhaps...
Your passing game expectations are that low?

He's great for Bucknell. IUP.
William and Mary

He sucks for ND ...or any school with post season aspirations.

Riley Leonard before Notre Dame...

Do you know what these numbers mean?
44
40
48
54
55
45
64
53

Looking at Riley's healthy 2022 season these numbers are alarming...

His ranking among all QB's In 2022

#44 in completion %
#40 in passing yardage
#48 in touchdown passes
#54 in yards per attempt
#55 in touchdown percentage
#45 in adjusted yards per attempt
#64 in yards per catch
#53 in yards per game...

And possibly the worst one...
#48 in QB rating

I say again if Riley is playing QB for The Citadel he's doing OK.

The problem is he's playing for us and
this is NOT what we need.

Most QB's that are decent have a stat or two throwing the ball in the top 20 even if some others stats are in the 40/50 ranking area.

He's nowhere near that in any passing stat.

I guarantee you and would bet anyone that Angeli would crack the top 30 in at least one of the above stats and probably gets in the top 30 in a few categories.

If we get all punch drunk over a transfer QB with these numbers then that warrants immediate dismissal on many fronts of the head coach.

We have QB's on the roster that would do better than this.

Oh well...

maybe in 2028 we'll get this QB thing figured out.
Don't hold your breath

NIU head coach

The thing is... turn around from what? His own missteps and underachieving? ND may not have been able to take the last step under the previous staff, but the last 5 years the won all the games they were supposed to.
What did those who supported Freeman’s hire think?

That he would simply waltz in and outperform a guy who by that time had 10 double digit win seasons, 113 wins at ND, 3 undefeated regular seasons (two at ND, one at Cincinnati), and in his final 5 seasons at ND, double digit wins in each of them while winning at an 85.7% clip and appearing in two playoff games?

VERSUS WHAT FREEMAN HAD ACCOMPLISHED?

And just because he was a NICER GUY than Kelly and someone with whom recruits “identified?”

This was the guy who was going to take ND to the PROMISED LAND? And because Jack Swarbrick had some kind of “VISION?”

Whatever CRACK that was people were smoking, MAY I PLEASE HAVE A HIT?

NIU head coach

If the goal is to only win titles...or you're fired, then Ryan Day at Ohio St. should be fired, Lane Kiffin at Mississippi should be fired, Sark at Texas should be fired, Luke Fickell at Wisconsin should be fired, Lincoln Riley at USC should be fired, James Franklin at Penn St. should be fired, and many other head coaches.
My original criticism is u finally lost confidence in freeman as a head coach because he loses to teams he should not. Natty is a pipe dream that will never happen based on losing to teams that are sub par

Turn around from just that, beating the teams they should and getting embarassed by top 10 teams. BK should have been gone long before if the vision is to win national championships. Freeman was a high risk hire, 0 guarantees. I didn’t support the hire and thought Fickel should have been targeted. That being said, ND took a chance on a coach with 0 head coaching experience, bumps expected. The remainder of this season will tell if Freeman can corral the team. the verdict is still out.

Coaching from a chair, after the game, is the easy part.

In the stadium, in the moment, second and one, I do not fault Mike Denbrock at all.

And I won't tomorrow.
I will. We were all screaming about the call where I was watching the game. And about the throw

Everyone was like what the hell are we thinking going deep at that point. And what the hell kind of a throw was that

Both were ripped to shreds

So he's injured as you said later but you wanted him sitting in the pocket throwing a deep ball on 2nd and 1 at the 50 when we're trying to ice the game. Hand the ball off, use the clock, get your first down and let the defense get some rest

He sucked in College Station. Just didn't lose the game.

He sucked against NIU

He sucked at Durham

Riley is a lousy QB.

Period!

P.s.

He's the perfect QB for a school like NIU.

speaking of NIU...

I'd take their QB over Riley all day long and twice on Saturday

Totally disagree, he had 2 open receivers. It was an absolute misread and a terrible throw by an experienced QB. Both Collins and Mitchell were open, you take your shot, but obviously execute much better.

NIU head coach

Yeah. He offered genuine help as in looking at film together and understanding schemes, etc. It was offered with best intentions not as a rub. The guy is all class. Said he is so grateful to ND for scheduling the game and that freeman treated him as an equal n was a great guy n wishes freeman a natty
If our AD had any guts he would call him up and ask if he wants to coach at ND

That’s awesome. I’d hope Freeman would be able to figure a lot of this stuff out on his own but perhaps there’s some very technical pointers Hammock could give.

NIU head coach

He called him and offered to help him? That’s incredible. Tremendous class. Maybe this happens more than we realize but that’s really cool. I’m not sure how that goes over as Freeman is the head coach of Notre Dame. Like…did Freeman actually accept help? It was probably more gameplanning stuff or just a general, polite offer. Maybe a bit of networking.

I liked how he went nuts on the player that bumped Greathouse on the punt return though that should have been called. The man was crying after the win and it was genuine. I respect that. Yet people will say Notre Dame is irrelevant.

What an all-time doozy of a loss. I still think Marshall was worse but this one hurts more. I think NIU is a good team that should probably finish better than their 7-6 2023 season. Maybe 10-4 or 11-3 or better?

A bit of hope: NIU beat 7-6 Boston College last year and then turned around and lost to Southern Illinois the next week. Then BC almost beat FSU but for 20 penalties. Crap happens and you lose sometimes.

Uh - ND do I’d not win all the games they were supposed to the last 2 years. That’s the point

We lost games we should not have. And freeman’s blunders vd Ohio state lost that game also
