I get where you are coming from, but you keep obfuscating the point...ND would do a great social good by providing a remedial path to an easier degree that wouldn't at all dilute the academic brand.

I know and work with many ND graduates in hi-tech. They would never take such a program and still would have gone the STEM degree path. Obviously.

And just like my Jesuit alma mater, the tuition is appalling. This wasn't what higher education was meant to be. Never mind the Catholic mission.

Finally, the point stands about hypocrisy around ND reaping a lot by participating in the sordid competition that is NCAA football. Let's be real here.

Let me distill it this way...decision are typically made by:

1) plotting a curve through N dimensions in a graph for best fit...gives odds of outcome.
2) so called neural network...paths of outcomes based on how many factors in each layer.

Another way to explain it is you can use statistics to record throwing a football and where it will land. Get the variables on each throw. AI will do a solid job of predicting where the ball lands.

But statistical confidence factor is not the laws of physics. The laws of physics will predict EXACTLY where the football will land. The usual correlation vs causality.

Of course, AI can use the laws of physics...but without the laws, well, you use regressions or neural networks.

I know I'll get flak for my comment. But there is an air of hypocrisy here. As an immigrant myself, we had affordable Catholic education as an option. I went to Catholic grammar school, HS (run by the Congregation of Holy Cross that runs ND), and a Jesuit university.

The current tuition and elitism are appalling. Slowly eroding the Catholic identity. And yet they quibble over taking in marginalized students that could stand a remedial program, as they help build and maintain a binding football brand?

Are his numbers bad? He had basically the same yards in 2022 as Caleb Williams did in 2023. Is he as good as Williams because his yards are the same? Obviously not.

Statistics are nice but don’t tell the whole story. Just looking at his completion percentage: He’s ranked 44 in 2022. Out of how many QB’s? There are 134 teams so he’s at least 44/134 which is good for top 33%. Without any context, I’d probably take that. More than 134 QB’s obviously played so does that stat include all QB’s or just starters or just guys with 100 passes? What if he’s 44 out of 188? Now that’s top 24%. With no context I’d take that.

I could use Denbrock’s #1 offense in 2023 to argue that he’s overrated (and I do think he’s overrated but I’m still happy he’s here.)

Stats are overrated. He was definitely the MVP of that Duke team. Maybe ND goes 12-0 if he comes to ND in 2023? That’s very realistic.

Agreed Game 1 was solid (he also had 12 carries for 63 yds). But if the struggles continue Saturday, I hope they're willing to make a QB change at halftime, if needed.

Looking at Riley's healthy 2022 season these numbers are alarming...

His ranking among all QB's In 2022

#44 in completion %
#40 in passing yardage
#48 in touchdown passes
#54 in yards per attempt
#55 in touchdown percentage
#45 in adjusted yards per attempt
#64 in yards per catch
#53 in yards per game...

And possibly the worst one...
#48 in QB rating

I say again if Riley is playing QB for The Citadel he's doing OK.

The problem is he's playing for us and
this is NOT what we need.

Most QB's that are decent have a stat or two throwing the ball in the top 20 even if some others stats are in the 40/50 ranking area.

He's nowhere near that in any passing stat.

I guarantee you and would bet anyone that Angeli would crack the top 30 in at least one of the above stats and probably gets in the top 30 in a few categories.

If we get all punch drunk over a transfer QB with these numbers then that warrants immediate dismissal on many fronts of the head coach.

We have QB's on the roster that would do better than this.

Oh well...

maybe in 2028 we'll get this QB thing figured out.

If everything's clicking and he's at his best he's definitely the best QB, and that includes of course running the ball on a regular basis. His passing is not great I guess, but he can hit throws. But he's probably not going to carve up a defense. Any injury to a running QB that limits him isn't ideal at all, obviously. And puts the even more pressure on the passing game, when what he needs is the opposite. So maybe you're right and that's really the big thing with RL. His health.

Completely irresponsible to keep an injured player like that in the game and trotting them out the next week to play as well. Leonard is also culpable as he is the one ultimately who needs to know his own limitations/abilities but players generally think they can achieve more than they are able to. Blows my mind that the coaches really were trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. A QB change after Leonard's injury probably wins that NIU game.

Yes agree, QB's have played with this same injury to the non throwing shoulder, apparently it has no impact on their ability to throw the ball.
