Leonard’s Shoulder Injury

The backups are fine. Angeli has proven he can play. I trust him in any situation.

Leonard stayed in because he was "hurt". He wasn't "injured". Leonard could play, so the staff stayed with their QB1. It was a miss, a mistake. But I get and understand the decision.
Yes agree, QB's have played with this same injury to the non throwing shoulder, apparently it has no impact on their ability to throw the ball.

Football A collection of the greatest hits of quotes from Tuesday Notre Dame FB interviews

From the Tuesday night media availability of Notre Dame football coordinators and players, we’ve provided full transcripts of both offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock and defensive coordinator Al Golden.

We also wanted to give you some content from the other interviews. So, here are the greatest hits, or at least the most intriguing quotes, from TE Mitchell Evans, LB Jaiden Ausberry, DT Rylie Mills, RB Jeremiyah Love and special teams coordinator Marty Biagi:

Yeah, that's true. It's not typical to sub a QB out lightly. But we lost. To NIU. And RL is very clearly questionable in his ability to begin with. Raw talent, yes. Rock-solid, reliable ability, not as much. So maybe they should have made a move, in retrospect.

What does this quote say about ND QB play under Freeman?

Two huge names right there making the huge difference.
J.J. McCarthy and Luck could throw the ball down the field if needed.

You can call the 3 yard curl and sit route all gand but at some point if you must go down field with a big pass it mist get done.

Riley can't make that throw no matter the circumstances.

If any team remaining on our schedule goes up by 14 points in the second half it's over. No matter the opponent.

That's a sad but true reality at this point.

Angeli for president!!
CJ Carr may have Luck or McCarthy kind of talent; we don't know yet. But it's doubtful he plays much this year, probably.

Riley Leonard before Notre Dame...

This is the problem with Freeman himself. The empirical numbers and data don't add up when you research his record, stats, etc. I think we all knew he was a long shot when he was hired, but he just FEELS like the right guy for the job with his enthusiasm and love for ND. So you have to place your trust into wishful thinking, that somehow that will translate into a great head coach.
Faith based vs. Fact based!

What does this quote say about ND QB play under Freeman?

I count two head scratching losses there and three poor offensive performances. Parker's offense was inconsistent (at best) against good teams. That may not have been all his fault but he should not have been put in that position.
There's a huge difference between struggling on the road at Louisville (played in ACC championship game) and Clemson (perennial power; always very tough at home), and struggling against a MAC team.

Against MAC caliber teams under Parker, our offense never struggled. We had 580 yds on CMU last year. We also had over 500 yds on teams like Stanford and Pitt as well.

We took care of business against lesser teams.

Leonard’s Shoulder Injury

So if Freeman and Denbrock didn't feel comfortable enough to sub in one of Angeli, Minchey, or Carr after seeing Leonard suffer a signficant injury, can't call run plays and didn't pass well. Then what does that say about the backups? I would hope theyhave the confidence that at least one of them could handle the task of beating NIU. This news isn't making me feel any better.

It's been said and I'll say it again the 2nd and 1 play call was absolutely HORRIBLE

Perhaps you're on the hook for his NIL money?
Or...
Perhaps...
Your passing game expectations are that low?

He's great for Bucknell. IUP.
William and Mary

He sucks for ND ...or any school with post season aspirations.

It’s not my NIL or passing game expectations, I’m just very familiar with Leonard’s body of work and not throwing in the towel off of one game.

Where were you posting all of this stuff in the offseason or at least after the A&M game?

NIU head coach

It’s not. He calls Freeman to talk or whatever. He offers to help Freeman in any way just like Freeman might do. Freeman says, “hey, about that play on…” Hammock says, “yeah so the way we teach it is…”

Now the fact that it’s happening after loss, yes, that’s kind of embarrassing.
ND supposed to be one of the preeminent programs? I can’t even fathom Lou Holtz losing @ Home to a 28/29 point dog then being told by the opposing coach they can help. Also giving a pep talk. Another tell tale sign of ND Football 2024

I wonder if a #5 ranked OSU, Bama, UGA,

To be fair, RL looked way better than this when he was at Duke. Now he’s not sure of what he wants to do – he has opportunities to run, but he doesn’t run and he slow with his decision-making and somehow his arm strength seems to have gone away, which is really weird.

All I ever heard was Brian Kelly made quarterbacks, but now we have an experience quarterback to look much better and on top of all that we hired an offensive coordinator who orchestrated a historic offense last year.

I was at the ND/Duke game last year. Leonard was the leading rusher in the game for Duke (18 att-88 yds), but he did not stretch the field throwing the ball.

Here was his passing stat line:
12-27
134 yards (67 of those yards were to one receiver)
1 TD
1 INT

He never had a great arm to begin with. If ND wanted a portal QB, should have heavily pursued Kyle McCord or Cam Ward.

It's been said and I'll say it again the 2nd and 1 play call was absolutely HORRIBLE

I'll never give into that's the best time to take a shot. B effing S! You haven't established a downfield passing game all year and you obviously can't stop NIU's running attack consistently. Get the 1st down and continue to bleed the clock for a tuddy or a field goal.

I swear no matter who calls plays for ND gets struck by the BK sickness.
If we didn't have a QB with a noodle arm, he hits him in stride for a huge gain or maybe even a TD.

Leonard’s Shoulder Injury

When I'm wrong I admit it. I predicted Riley would last 4 games before getting hurt. It only took him a game and a half, I stand corrected. Without his running ability, he is a below average QB. His passing is mediocre at best.
You said if he was running he would be out. He was passing when he got hurt. Edit: might have gotten hurt earlier but most seem to think getting spun around and slammed is what got him…that was a passing play.

Disagree........ Poorly coached and communicated. This is where talking in the head set to Riley should have helped out.

"It's 2nd and 1, if it's not there look to your check down option" ....... That's the type of info you reinforce during the week and right before the play. A coach isn't going to say "don't throw a pick or don't underthrow it".

The fact that riley made the decision to throw it and threw it that short, lets anyone know it was poorly coached and prepared. Probably because we hardly throw downfield in practice. He threw a line drive, that pass is NEVER a line drive. So again, preparation that was clearly a disaster last week.
How do you know that exact quote wasn’t said into Riley’s headset pre snap? Not forcing it in that situation should be common sense for a qb with as much experience as Riley.

It's been said and I'll say it again the 2nd and 1 play call was absolutely HORRIBLE

If Riley Leonard was hurt, and could not run. The fact Freeman left him in the game, makes him SOLEY responsible for this loss. Riley Leonard with no ability to run, is far and away the worst QB on the roster. The reason ND has had 3 of these horrific losses in 2 seasons and 3 games is, because this Head Coach is clueless. A deep shot on 2nd & 1 is a fine call, but throwing the ball deep with a busted QB is coaching malpractice of the highest order.
I know, all you gotta do is take him out, and put him back in when he's better, vs Purdue, vs whoever. You don't have to permanently switch to Angeli. The point being, as you seem to allude to, there would be no need or call for any loyalty to, of all people, this newcomer, this transfer QB, as if his presence is some specific reflection on you, and so you're going to be loath to ever take him out. When of course such hesitation could be easily to the detriment of the team.

That's pure psychologizing on my part, but good god, I sure hope that's not where MF finds himself. You have to be strong enough as a HC, in the brave new world of free transfers and NIL money, to make a big investment and bring in a sought-after QB, but still be willing to bench him as needed for the good of the team, and by extension yourself, if the circumstances dictate, in this case merely a minor injury. And permanently or indefinitely if need be. And not let it feel as if it's your failure and let it cloud your judgement or affect your leadership.
