Pandora's box would be easier than this mess...

You say you get the logic, but you refuse to accept the reality. And we're just going to have to by fiat restrict those freedoms, as unpleasant as that may be, when the truth is there's no mechanism for that. The NCAA would definitely do that if they could but they can't, and the courts slap them down. This is not what the NCAA wants, but they have no choice. They have to collectively bargain with the players and they don't want to do that, and that's why it's a free for all.
The reality is the inmates are running the asylum.
Collective bargaining will allow for strikes so why would they do that?

Can Jagusah work his way into the lineup?

All good point echo.

I was not a lineman but how difficult is it to move someone from o line to d line ?

We have some really athletic o lineman that play with a nasty streak. To maximize the “team “ potential , Kelly did it with Jerry Tillery why can’t we do it with some of the abundance of o lineman we have. Are we really better off if some guys transfer out. ?

The way it looks is we have too many o lineman and not enough D lineman there’s going to be some guys that are highly rated recruits who are going to go somewhere else to play.
Thoughts ?
Simply doesn’t happen.

Will the three new receivers obtained through the portal

Do you think Fields is a bigger "get" than Mitchell and Collins were?
I do Mike. Collins numbers here are no better than his production at Clemson. Expected more. Mitchell has been a contributor, but not a lead receiver. Fields has the record that suggests he can be our lead receiver next year. Of course, hoping that Faison and others challenge for this.

Seems to me that selective repositioning should still be a viable option for filling positions of need. ND has had some spectacular success with this, and you don’t have to go further back than today’s AA Watts. I’ll be interested to read Echo’s reply here as he is a hell of a lot more qualified than I am. That said, I’ve always believed moving from the DL to the OL was damn near impossible. I still embrace the OLD notion that OL linemen are more disciplined and thoughtful, etc… and DL more aggressive and risk oriented, etc…. So, looking at our OL, two stand out to me as having the kind of size and PERSONALITY traits that could make this kind of position change: Pendleton and Terek. Both are north of 300 lbs, both are sophomores, both look to be bull like strong, both are very aggressive and road grader maulers in high school, etc…. Have no idea if either played any defense in high school, and it takes a hell of a lot more than size and personality traits to play interior DL at ND, but like to think our coaches are constantly thinking about options.

Fields didn't sign with nd without the staff selling him/them on the 25 qb…. Either we have a stud transfer lined up or the staff sold him/them on a qb currently on the team. I just would be a bit surprised rolling out a qb that’s never really played at Miami opening game. So maybe angeli, whom I don’t think is good enough. D will regresss some next year so we need the offense to be improved.
All speculation that adds up to nothing.

I’m not disagreeing with the logic in your statement. I’m all for the free market. But again, no professional athlete can go from team to team year after year. They negotiate and sign a contract. Coaches do the same. So why should college kids , who think they are entitled to be paid , be allowed to go from school to school without restrictions ? Think about applying the same set up to the NFL. Players should be able to go to any team they like or the highest bidder every year. No restrictions. Hey that’s the free market right ? Buffalo pays Allen 15 million for one year. But wait, the Raiders just said play for us and you’ll make 20 million. See where I am going with this ? I know it probably will never happen. But in theory it could. All NFL players have to do is stick together and only sign one year deals if they choose and each year go to the highest bidder.

I’m short. If college players believe they should be paid like professionals , then they should play by the same rules as professionals.

Well if that's true then we'll go with CJ, we don't need Quinn Ewers, nor would he come to ND. That would be a disaster. I think it would. He's not even considered a top NFL prospect anymore, more like a later round pick. CJ probably is ready to start and be a good to great starter, and what happens to Minchey and Angeli we don't know. But if we're going to go back to the portal, at least make it for a badass dual threat, and I don't think there's anyone left, unless we're tampering with somebody.

I'm just hoping there's a a robust open competition, and if CJ wins it then so be it.
I tend to agree, I don't believe a guy who played for Texas the last three years is a program fit the way Hartman and Leonard were (coming from basketball colleges.) I think Ewers is the real deal though, and who needs a dual threat QB when you have J Love?!

All I can go by is Eric and writers on this and other sites who have watched CJ in practice -- all have been unanimous in their praise of CJ. His leadership but mostly, the way he spins it. He seems like the guy. But, and fans are right, all QBs have a learning curve. It would sure be nice if Angeli stuck around to come in when needed. I don't expect that.

Ewers is an NFL level QB -- who has thrown for over 8500 yards and 63 TDs for three years. Ewers becoming Irish would make us (with our elite Offensive Line, RBs and defense) a top three contender for the title next year. Hard not to take a look at him if he is indeed available. Not sure we get through next year's tougher schedule and make the playoffs with an inexperienced QB.

In this case I'll trust the coaches -- I do think the disappointment in 2022 at QB might figure in any decision. We'll see.
