Kelly getting taken to the woodshed

Gangbanging, in this context refers to social media feeding frenzies. Where some poor sap, is caught in some compromising situation or whatever it is, says the wrong thing, is goaded or trolled into making a fool of himself, and everybody piles on. I know it's vulgar but that's the idea. That's the metaphor. And sometimes it gets really wild and vicious. And sometimes people lose their jobs, and get divorced, their personal lives are destroyed in the melee. And that's essentially what happened to BK, all time winningest coach at ND, in case you didn't know. And it was his own fans! And he didn't do anything at all, other than leave ND, and it had been brewing and percolating and festering for years. Before the damn burst, or the volcano erupted, I'll go with the latter. And burst it did, regular twitter-ites were in awe, not even CFB fans, at how vile and sadistic ND fans were being. It lasted several days. BK was trending! And it's been like that ever since.

So you burned that bridge. Or at least your more uncouth and savage brethren did.

I’d argue Brian Kelly burned that bridge and there’s a TON of evidence to support it.

Acting like that poor sap (Brian Kelly) “is caught in some compromising situation or whatever it is, says the wrong thing, is goaded or trolled into making a fool of himself,” is a very naive take. Nobody made Brian Kelly do what he did except himself. His words were also HIS words. He divorced ND willingly and deceptively. Excuse the rest of the family for not liking the lying cheating sleazeball who made it all our fault in a public forum. You may still be in love with him, but that’s not our fault/problem.

Kelly getting taken to the woodshed

Kelly did a very good job at ND but I think many good coaches could’ve done the same. He left like a jackass. That’s my biggest beef. I know that sends the two Kelly lovers over the edge, but it is what it is. That’s how a lot of ND fans think. Maybe I’m wrong but if he handled it better, I think a lot of us wouldn’t have the same ill will towards him. Call me petty but that was an ahole move saying what he said when he left. There was no need to do so. F him!

I'm not sure about doing the same. Everybody since Holtz failed pretty badly. The one thing I have to respect about BK is he restored ND to being a competitive team. As I keep saying, I'm grateful for that.

I actually was relieved he left. He hit his ceiling. I just didn't expect Marcus Freeman to be given the job, as I was skeptical but rolling with it. Obviously the hire worked, I was wrong, and ND is here in the semifinals showing great football.

Again, BK left a decent foundation for MF to take it to the next level.

Lets talk PSU

I need to study this thread and PSU more. I watched several Lion games. Typical BIG type football, textbook, not too much derivation, hard nosed, and usually plays their A game.

Their 2 playoff games convince me they are a legit top 10. I think a healthy ND is a legit top 5 now. But Irish injuries worry me.

For me, a lot will depend on Denbrock and RL. Some play action to open up the run game. I don't know enough to say run game focused down center or edges or option.

I guess this also depends on what works and how to adjust in the game itself?
That would be sweet if we opened up and started passing more aggressively, just to catch them off guard. PSU sold out so blatantly to stop Ashton Jeanty, they didn't try to disguise at all. RL's not a great passer, but he can certainly make throws. He's got a good enough arm.

That would be an awesome way to beat PSU and advance to the final. He doesn't have to pass for 400 yards, but if we could hit a few deep strikes and get a nice 1st half lead, it could go down in Irish lore. Like the chicken soup game or whatnot.

Kelly getting taken to the woodshed

Your hero worship of Brian Kelly is apparently boundless. Like the mythological Icarus, you have flown too close to the sun, and now you are in a free fall, tumbling toward Earth.

Because someone levels a criticism toward Brian Kelly doesn't make them a "hater" or a "gang-banger" or a member of a "mob", or whatever other pejorative you want to throw at them. Kelly is a good coach, even a "totally super successful coach," to use your description. But there is no denying that BK's Notre Dame teams, almost without exception, failed on the big stage. Not only do you refuse to admit that, you are apparently incapable of even seeing it. You have offered a litany of excuses for those failures, except for the obvious one: Kelly just wasn't prepared for the big moment. Was that on his players or on him? Does that make him a bad man or a bad coach? Of course not. But it excludes him from membership in the fraternity of great coaches.

In his own words, Kelly left Notre Dame to go to LSU and compete for national championships. If you don't see the irony in the fact that 3 years later Kelly has a largely middling record of success at LSU--yes, he has won games, but he hasn't come close to competing for a national title--and Marcus Freeman has Notre Dame playing in the CFB semi-finals, there is little hope for you. Take the BK blinders off.

Can somebody provide the relative F+ of ND vs PSU heading into this game.

ND has played back to back top 10 teams in recent weeks and won and TAM, Louisville, USC and Army have maintained top 15-top 30 rankings. At this point (based on NDs playoff performance) the respect/quality of their schedule has definitely increased but OSU is further ahead of the field than they have been at any point this season.

If ND doesn't beat OSU .. and worse if they get ran over by OSU we're back to square one banging our collective heads against the wall about how far away ND still is from winning a national championship (in the same way we were when Alabama ran over ND back in 2012)

This is not to bash ND, but to reinforce the point that we have to close the talent gap so that it increases the upside of the team during head to head games vs teams of OSUs quality (teams that are matching the coaching/player development side of the equation as well as ND is, but also just flat out out-talenting ND on the recruiting trail like OSU is)

Thanks I appreciate it. I respect the fact that you disagree in a constructive way and point out flaws in the logic and otherwise approach with an inquisitive disposition.
ND has won 9 straight vs the top 25. That equals elite. No amount of coaching or smoke & mirrors can produce that record. You gotta have the players with talent to go on that type of streak.

Aren't you precious. F him! That's what you guys always say. if he had just left with a bit more class. I'm pretty sure I can recall you hating on the mofo well before he was gone. So your excuse rings hollow. But I'm going to say you never really wanted to hate the guy, but you couldn't resist the tide of the online mob. It's a well-known phenomenon. Anyway, whatevs. It'd be nice if you could restrain yourself, but I realize that's too much to ask. And for the most part you're pretty tame, and I do appreciate it, one ND fan to another.

Hopefully, if we do win the title, that the BK gloating and bashing won't kick in for at least a few days after. Maybe you'll be so high on vicarious athletic glory that it will bring out your natural magnanimity.
