The NFL thing is a distraction. Recruiting the top players is ultra competitive especially in the Midwest. The last thing we need is our coach being mentioned each year as a possible NFL candidate. It has to be on the recruits minds also. If Kelly wants to remain at ND then he needs to come out and say it. If he can't then we need to start looking for a successor. Our performance needs to be improved on both sides of the ball and you gotta wonder maybe if the head coach were more focused on his college job than his NFL opportunity that would be a great start. We are literally so close to having an amazing class come in. I would really hate to see a last minute change and the administration should be weighing this too.

Saban and Meyer are also mentioned every year as potential NFL coaches. There are all sorts of Meyer to the Browns rumors out there right now. So maybe we should take it as a positive.

Saban already had a stint in the NFL and is now back in the college game, so recruits probably sense he isn't going back to the NFL any time soon.

Urban and Kelly are another story. Neither has been in the NFL and I've no idea whether either one wants to give it a try.

Agreed, if they don't, they should make it clear so recruits know who they can expect to get.

but no one, absolutely no one, believes either seriously considers the NFL; Kelly has no such image.

No worries. Every recruit knows his history. His ditching an undefeated cinci team pre BCS Sugar Bowl game is unparalleled in the annals of coaching at any level. He then attempted the same stunt the day after our 'bama crushing loss....and went dark for days.... In times of great need he ditches his troops. What a guy!

Just listen to Jaylon's remarks on the day he signed with ND. Go to the 48 second mark. This is a common view.....

I'm not so sure about that, especially as it pertains to Meyer. I do not think that Saban, at his age, has any reason to want to go back to the NFL where he loses the king status he has at Bama to an owner and maybe even a strong GM. But I have no reason to think Meyer might not want his shot at the NFL. Whether he says so or not.

No public statement is ever going to stop all rumors. He can come out and say he's not interested this year, but they're going to come up next year as well (and they may even still come up this year, notwithstanding what he says).

Amen JS, I would say that most players that commit to ND due so because it's ND and they commit to the university, education and experience rather than a coach. Now, BK has taken the recruiting to a new level because of his level of success on the field. Guys who go to OSU/Bama prob commit to the coach (two legends) but that's what makes ND special is the fact that the majority of these guys aren't just here to play football.

Also, if it is BK's aspirations to coach in the NFL, why shouldn't he be able to hear/pursue those dreams? Are you dogging Jaylon, Fuller, CJ, Tuitt, Russell for leaving their team high and dry? No, they are chasing their dream and if BK considers the Giants as a promotion and wants to coach at the pinnacle of his profession then he has every right to entertain the opportunity. See CVG when you enter the workforce, there are these things called promotions. I have left several companies for new opportunities but nobody said I was ditching the team and company.

His "word" isn't worth much....

Saturday NC game presser:

"Coach Saban said he was a college coach after having dipped into the NFL. Is that the same for you? Are you a college coach or has the NFL ever been a desire for you?

COACH BRIAN KELLY: No, and I think when I took the job at Notre Dame, I think I said it was a dream job. But I never went around day to day thinking about being the Notre Dame head coach, because the job that I had in hand was what I was thinking about. And I think that's the same thing with the NFL. I think from my perspective I've got the best job in the country, NFL, college, high school, whatever. I just look at the place that I'm at and thankful for the opportunity that I have.

Days later:

"Like every kid who has ever put on a pair of football cleats, I have had thoughts about being a part of the NFL."

that is why, promoting one of these talented coachs on staff is so advisable.

If anyone took time to read comments by JMcK about Sanford then in addition to being one of college footballs hottest young coaches he resonates with recruits and their families.

cincinati or notre dame. this is nonsense . if you work for a company and get let go you can look for a job but if you have a job you can not look for a job even though its not the best opportunity. you are smarter than this

You cannot promote an assistant with no HC.experience to head coach in a major top 10 program. If you do and they fail you are subject to major criticism. You also set recruiting back lightyears. That's why the Meyers, Harboughs. and Sabans. make the big bucks. Look at Al Golden. He was a big time hyped assistant and had a small stint at Temple. When he went to Miami everyone figured National championship run. Look what happened.

^ play it safe and miss on the next big coach? (meyer?)

"Success is stumbling from failure to failure with no loss of enthusiasm.”

Why would Saban and Meyer go to the pros and take a pay cut and give up their security?

PS. Meyer would still be at Florida if it weren't for the big doners that wanted to have their say in how to run the show and then decided to run Meyer off if they couldn't get their way. Guess 2 NC's wasn't enough for them????

This whole thing ticks me off. There are multiple big time recruits who have us in their top 3 teams. Landing 2 or 3 of them gives us a real shot next year and years afterward. Why the heck would anyone leave a program when you are at the cusp of landing on the top and you have a shot at signing a top 3 recruiting class!

^ that's ok; all of them are speaking highly of Sanford. And, Kelly has assured prospects he is staying.
And you know when a D1 Head football coach gives an assurance, you can take it to the bank!

This seems the glass-half-empty approach; should all decisions be made worrying about the unknown and unpredictable thoughts of high schoolers?

Another thread has discussion of naming a QB starter now; do you think recruits will stress about the future possibility of losing their position to injury if Kelly decides one way or the other?

A major program NEVER worries about the current recruiting class when deciding on a coach. Easier to survive a mediocre recruiting class than a poor coaching hire.

if this class falls...ND will not compete at the top 20 level for 4-6 years

He should have told swarbrick let's sign an NDA and I'll be at ND ready to rumble on Jan 2..... His PC with ND was held on Dec 11. We're talking three weeks which includes the Christmas Holidays. He f'd a lot of folks and left his team in tears. There's a right way to do things..... Find me another coach that pulled a similar stunt.... Good luck with that....

You did not post much when the Irish were winning. Now after a couple of losses you are posting all the time.
You know crap about Football.

Not like Kelly. Every year for the last several the moment our season ends its nfl rumor coach time. Hell our final game game hadn't been played in 12 and he was interviewing with the eagles

If ND did not get one recruit in this cycle they would still be in the top twenty for the next three years

Perse you are bitter old man obsessed with someone and something you know nothing about

your argument does not make sense. lets see Saban was hired at LSU bales on them to Miami and then bales on Miami for rumored problems with ownership and front office to Alabama . RICHT hired at Georgia after a number of years gets fired from Georgia because of admin dissatisfaction . Les Myles gets almost booted because of fan and admin dissatisfaction but because of ESPN pressure was not fired thats OK. Now Kelly leaves Cincinnati at the end of the season and starts his new job before the bowl game you complain. when Weis does not start until after the super bowl and it hurt notre dame in recruiting. this to me is a non issue you seem to cherry pick and then over emphasize it

You are a fraud Bodi -- during our losing streak last year ( due to losing over half our defense ) you threw coach kelly under the bus -- now you chirp your sophomoric bandwagon horseshit

you are a two trick pony

1) hypocrite
2) fraud

Knowledgeable consistent support is a sign of character and intelligence .

Any savvy fan would know exactly what happened to our team last season and held off on the blame game

infantile half wits like you and perse just do the infantile blame dance - characterless behavior

BTW nitwit comparing me to Joseph Stalin and calling me a communist was really impressive -- your from Mississippi I assume Fox News is your news station of choice

You seriously think that if we didn't land any recruit this cycle, and thus had a hole in the Class of 2016, we'd still be in the Top 20 for the next three years?

Decent examples, but none were undefeated and heading into the Sugar Bowl. Plus, getting fired is different than seeking new employment. 12-0 kelly should have handled it better... 9-2 saban too.... weis' NFL calendar time line is significantly different than these other examples....

"Nick Saban immediately regretted his decision to leave Michigan State forLSU in 1999, going as far as placing a teary phone call requesting his job back. It was five-thirty in the morning," Underwood said. "He just said, 'I made a mistake, and I want to come back.' He said he was lonely. He was crying."

No NFL GM who wants to remain employed will seriously consider BK.
BK is going nowhere in '16. But when he does the good news he takes a whole lot of These vulgar D-A ID's with him! For sure.

Those that remain will be the ND fans.

I hope Kelly gets a pro job because Notre Dame will have to shut down its program without him at the helm. Kellys Heroes would probably kill himself if BK leaves. I guess that would be a bonus to Kelly going to pros.
