Where are all the Riley critics?

RL is the first QB we've had in some time that could pick up the team and carry it during the game. He's done that a few times this year. Funny it's with his legs and not his arm, but he's getting better with his arm. I said before the year started he was the best of the 3 transfer QB's and I still think that's true.
Respect your opinion. Dillon Gabriel is a better QB, IMO.

I get that Leonard's development was delayed because of the surgery, but it's the end of October for God's sake. How long does it take what is essentially a pro quarterback who signed a lucrative ree agent contract to get up to speed?

And yes, he's a good runner and showing himself to be an average passer. That's all well and good until we play a quick and strong defense that neutralizes our offensive line, which has been the case in just about* every big game we've lost for the last 30-plus years. (*Yes, there are exceptions to every rule.)
Do you think this team could maybe win it all if RL could just, rise to the occasion or whatever, heck if he could just be as good a passer as Ian Book it would be like a sea change improvement in our pass game. Heck if we had Ian Book on this team, maybe we could win it this year, since it's kind of wide open. He could probably run just as effectively or better than RL. But he's a good passer so why would we?

Anyway, it makes it more of an adventure this way. If we go 11-1 we'll probably get to host a 1st round game.

Alright man, cool. That's nice you're all validated by RL's improved play. Better than Jack Coan, better than Sam Hartman.. And when the time comes and the need arises he will carry this team on his back! Don't listen to any of these haters saying if we're even losing in the fourth quarter and have to come from behind that we're screwed. On his back!

I think it's more than RL. Our receivers need to improve, and I want to see the day when our offensive line doesn't turn into giant blobs of tapioca pudding when facing a tough defense. I think we remain in that second tier from like #5 to #12 and would be happily proven wrong.

Well it is true that we're not going to be battle-tested like LSU might be, even though I don't think they will make the playoff with the loss to A&M. They'll lose again. But an SEC schedule gets you ready. It probably doesn't matter. This team seems pretty lively right now, able to take on any comer I'd like to think, and put a good foot forward. We just can't have any more injuries.

Garbage.

The OL fared really well at TAM, and that win is proving to be impressive.

He is playing really well! Seems like a great leader.
I'm right here...

He's playing better and he'll need to play even better yet if this season is to go longer than 13 games.

That said there are still throws he can't make. Deep balls are limited to 45 yards and under.
He can't throw against the grain.
(Running to his left and throwing on the run)

Let me know when he hits a player crossing the middle in stride for a huge gain.

He's given me a little optimism and hopefully it continues

Stop with the SEC hysteria.

They refuse to play North the Mason Dixon line post Halloween...

Just like other conferences they have a few teams around the top of the conference who are solid teams and the rest are simply average teans.

That said and it can't be dismissed...
Winning experience on a big stage helps. Georgia can enter the playoff and not piss the bed. They've been there many times as of late.
Bama... the same way.

That definitely helps in a match up during the post season if the opposition doesn't know how to win big or win in a big moment.

23702 posts and still no substance.

What exactly was proven wrong?

Did his draft stock go from practice squad tight end to 7th round QB?
Or are you still going to draft him first round on your Xbox?

He can't throw against the grain.

Sometimes his accuracy is as bad or worse than Wimbush..

And he's got about 45 non wind aided yards in that arm.

Now which part exactly was proven wrong?

He's playing better but for god sake ....
Riley's best day throwing the ball is three yards less than Angelli threw to beat Oregon State.
232 yards for Angelli
229 yards for Riley Leonard

That's hilarious actually.

P.s.

Don't look at the QB ratings

It's even worse

I'd say he is still a strong contender for an NFL practice squad player, nothing more

To be fair Colin Cowherd was talking about the Jets drafting Leonard to back up then replace Rodgers this week on his show. CC not the greatest talent evaluator but I do think he is going to be drafted.

Riley Leonard is the best QB on the ND roster and gives ND the best chance to win football games. He is at ND because he was QB ND had the most trouble defending last season. Angeli is a serviceable back up and spot starter, he did a great job in a meaningless Sun Bowl game, Just like Rees did a great job in 2010 in a meaningless Sun Bowl game.

Neither Rees or Angeli were ever considered long term solutions. Nor will they ever be considered long term solutions or starters. But in the world of the transfer portal and injuries, They are great guys to have on the roster, because in conjuction with a great defense and great running game. They can win some games for you in a pinch.

Holy cow, someone making sense without insulting half of the other people on the board.

That means he is going to be a perennial all pro.
Never happen. Stick to the defensive side of the ball. Your call on BVG being an awesome DC will go down as one of the stupidest posts on this forum, followed closely by Golson5 and RL being first round NFL talent.

I didn’t like it when they brought him into the program and I still don’t like it. I have nothing against him but he is not a great QB. This coaching staff has got to stop bringing in a rental QB and start developing the ones they have as freshman.

What? What was so compelling about that apologia, shall we say, of Riley Leonard? He literally said RL was the QB on our schedule that gave us more trouble than any other and that's why he recruited him and offered him a million dollars. You couldn't find any more gibberish pure rhetoric than that. That is not why ND recruited him, in any way whatsoever. He was merely available, and was thought to be pretty good. Not because we compared him to the other 11 QBs we faced a season ago, and then winnowed the list down, which is just stupid. It's my understanding that RL wanted to transfer and cash in, and ND thought here's someone pretty good we could go with, he's a milk-toast so he'll fit right in at ND. And so they made an offer. The best you could say is since we did play Duke, we got a first-hand look, and he wasn't even that good, about what he is now, effective runner, lousy passer. But apparently good enough, and that's what was available. And that's why he's our QB.

Arknasas' QB is actually pretty intriguing as someone we could have gone after. He was a transfer from Boise. As well as KJ Jefferson, who was a transfer from Arkansas. They're both dual threats too, especially Green. But RL has definitely come through as a good and reliable running QB, and is pretty fun to watch.

Most people think this is probably the last year we bring in a transfer QB for awhile, now that we have several talented young QBs on the roster.

Who? Same guys? Or is it their maturity level, and they were just too young? Because Angeli is in his 3rd year, and is either too young, sucks too much or both. And Minchey and Carr who are both fine prospects, are indeed young, and will be significantly older and more mature in a year one would like to surmise. But still on the young side, and this isn't Bryce Underwood we're talking about with these two, they're just good prospect.

So if Angeli is just not good enough period, and Minchey and Carr are good enough, but will still both be on the young/immature side, why wouldn't we go for another transfer yet again, especially if we make the playoff with our current one. We've done quite nicely with the transfers we already had. Jack Coan led us to 11-1 and what would have been easy playoff qualification in BK's final season. And SH was fine, he wasn't bad at all, we had a shitty OC.

I definitely think would should at least consider another transfer at QB for '25. See who's out there. Unless, and of course this is a real consideration, all of our current QBs transfer in response, literally all three. Or at least two. I guess fans would be fine if Angeli and Minchey left, because everybody wants Carr to take over, and that way he could apprentice one more year.

We did the transfer portal because of previous regimes poor recruiting. With Minchey, Carr Hebert it won't be necessary

It was absolutely necessary the last 2 years

I'd say he is still a strong contender for an NFL practice squad player, nothing more
Not saying you're wrong but as what purpose exactly?
Those practice squad players aren't exactly chopped liver and are emergency type players.

His running is better than his throwing but possesses an injury history.
Moreover his type of running more than not is simply a student body right type of running play. Burl on in there and get the 3 or 4 yards cloud of dust be damned.

His running style is certainly not a recipe for career longevity in the NFL.
He's not as big as Josh Allen...and definitely not as fleet of foot as Jackson.

I don't want to hate on RL. I wish he was all that plus bag o' chip..or whatever the youth says these days...
And he is playing better.

That said his highest yardage totals passing the ball this year are...
229 and 203.
He's only eclipsed the 200 yard mark in 2024 mind you, twice!

His 2022 year at Duke he eclipsed the 200 mark seven times. Three of them being well over 300 yards with one approaching 400. (391)
A slew of games approaching 300 yards.

Frankly I don't care what he does or doesn't do on Sunday.
I'm concerned with him helping us win.
Notuimg more, nothing less.

Yet, you engage with Chaseball regularly, who regurgitates the same stupid comments daily, weekly and monthly, and you keep his troll act alive.

So go figure.

I think we’re in a place now where Golson and 88 are both right. RL has improved. He’s a good runner, but is he elite? We won’t know unless he can do it in a playoff game. His arm has improved, but he needs to do that in a playoff game also. If he doesn’t throw that pick against NIU, he’s undefeated. Same, he can carry the team but we’ll see if he can do it at usc and the postseason.

Overall, I’m glad he’s at ND and I’m excited for the rest of the season.

I think it's possibly a tough call, depending on who's available. And I guess how good the incumbents appear to to progressing. Of course that's my speculation. But I suppose, it's time to let the guys already on the roster have a turn.

other teams bring in freshmen who start and play well as sophomores. IF we cannot it is one of two things: they did not have the talent or we did not have the coaching.

I didn't want another transfer portal qb but RL is playing better as the season moves along and is very tough to defend. I expect this team to get to the playoffs.
