Most big 5 schools are playing crappy opponents in the first half of the season ..

all of those team's strength of schedule will drastically improve over the remaining ~4-5 weeks left in the season ...

being #5 right now means nothing

That's right, but how would you have reacted if ND was 16?

the significance is it indicates the committee has not locked in on conference afiliations; that is why this weeks standing has some meaning. Lose to Stanford and then....

You have to be an idiot not to see that we are just placeholders until the conferences figure things out.
You have been reported. What a pathetic life you must lead to sit there and just come up with login after login just to flame a few people on some obscure college sports board. Seriously there is more to life, get off here and go find it. Best of luck and welcome to my ignore list..... again!

They key part of the OPs statement is "were number 5." WIn out and ND is in. Bama or LSU will drop, the Big 12 will beat up on each other, OSU has to beat MSU and Michigan.

ND beats a good Pitt team, takes care of business against Wake and Bc, and then beats a top ten Stanford, and they will be in.

Awesome position to be in right now.

True but hopefully they will beat up on each other and also LSU plays Alabama Saturday

IF ND runs the table and ends the season on a win AT Stanford, a P5 conference winner with 1 loss is going to have to pull an Ohio State 2014 beat down of their opponent in the conference championship to jump them.

Assuming ND beats Stanford, The Pac 12 is out. If the Big 12 champ has 1 loss, ND has a very good chance of getting in before them. That's all that really needs to happen.

Win out. Big 12 champ with 1 loss. ND is in.

Being #5 right now does NOT mean we just need to win out to be in, even with Bama and LSU playing each other. If any team comes out of the Big 12 November round robin undefeated I guarantee you they end up ahead of us. Right now that team doesn't have the impressive wins, but if they are undefeated at the end of November they will have plenty of them.

All ND needs is one of the top 4 spots. If the big 12 champ is undefeated that elimnates the rest of the conf.

His parents put lead paint in his fruit loops.

You could say the same thing about LSU or Ohio State. Only a couple of tough games up to this point. Being 5th this week is a hell of a lot better than being 17th. For ND & a lot of teams, it is simply Win & You're In.

big 12 will destroy itself. Especially if OU wins out. No chance ou gets in over ND with that loss to Texas. if tcu or Baylor wins out, then they will likely take a spot.

Pac 12 is very likely out if Stanford doesn't win out. A one loss Utah team is not likely to make it.

Ideally Osu drops a game and then beats msu and loses to Michigan. Its very possible the Big ten can get left out this year. Neither MSU or OSU are getting in with a loss as their sos are not good.

lots of football left.

if teams in conferences start being left out of the playoffs a/c of intra conference losses, you can expect a revision to:
the selection committee
the number of teams in the playoffs
and
more intense criticism of ND's status
