Yeah all the things fans were told were important were kicked aside pretty quickly by the college presidents.CFB is laughable, inner-state rivalries going by the way side, no more Civil War, no more Apple Cup, is ND SC next?
No more bedlam. College football is losing its identity for $$$$$$$CFB is laughable, inner-state rivalries going by the way side, no more Civil War, no more Apple Cup, is ND SC next?
if espn gets dumped or has other severe $$ issues, it would be a problem for the sec and acc....good timing by the bigten to be exiting their deal with espn....What happens if Disney spins of ESPN. Whole thing could collapse
This. The mega deals could default and then conferences would collapse. What happens if Disney spins of ESPN. Whole thing could collapse
We’re pretty powerful but when it comes to viewership which TV networks focus on, I believe we rank about #6. Ohio State and Michigan still are the top dogs.**** conferences. ND will remain independent for the rest of time.
If they ever enter a conference it will be temperate and on NDs terms. people forget that ND has 20 million fans and more power than ANY other team. When you have 20 million fans, you do what you want.
Brandonization in progress! It seems that the only discussion about these changes concerns football and TV. Even though schools can make more money by going big, the cost of moving non-football teams around the country to play their games will increase and eat away at some of the extra money earned. For climate change enthusiasts, these changes will also increase the carbon footprint of college sports. The world of unintended consequences about these moves is yet to strike.

To put in perspective, last year Clemson @ ND had 3.2M viewers which was the 4th most watched game that day. Ohio State @ Northwestern had 4.7M viewers. We went up against Alabama LSU that night which certainly hurt us as they had 7.5M views.
We are powerful, but we certainly aren’t #1 and there are a few teams that are more valuable.
I do need to point out that we CAN be that powerful. In 2012 we were by far the most watched team as we were undefeated, but this idea we have 20M fans is a bit much. Even in 2012 when we play a home game against a mid opponent, like Wake Forest and we’re 10-0, we still had under 3M viewers.

If we;re being honest, not much longer and it will boil down to the conferences not scheduling us. W're on our way to the Big Ten - like it or notThe rest will go to the big 12. Maybe, OSU and Michigan will have some competition other than themselves.
I do not see Riley staying at USC very long. His star QB heads to the NFL after this year. They were one win away from the playoffs. I If they won either game against Utah who knows what happens.
I do not how long ND can stay independent. The ACC has huge buy outs , but it looks like Clemson and FSU cannot wait to leave
Agreed for sure. Certainly a down year for the Irish and when we’re undefeated, we compete with the top schools of ratings like OSU, Mich, Texas & Bama.Marshall debacle put fans to sleep for the season.
Doubtful … and there are plenty of good teams not in the BIG or SEC and a number of crappy teams that are in the BIG and SEC.If we;re being honest, not much longer and it will boil down to the conferences not scheduling us. W're on our way to the Big Ten - like it or not
Most of the annual Playoff caliber teams will be in those 2 conferences starting in 2024 - plain and simple. If we want in the Playoffs on a consistent basis, we will have to play their members - no way around it. And not only that, but several ACC teams are looking for a way out. We need to start facing reality or we'll end up being a big fish in a very small pondDoubtful … and there are plenty of good teams not in the BIG or SEC and a number of crappy teams that are in the BIG and
I don’t see it the way you do, ND should play its hand with confidence, moves made out of fear are seldom good ones. I do understand your concern though. Most of the annual Playoff caliber teams will be in those 2 conferences starting in 2024 - plain and simple. Jack has said it several times publicly. Maintaining Independence is the goal, as long as the following can be sustainedI don’t see it the way you do, ND should play its hand with confidence, moves made out of fear are seldom good ones. I do understand your concern though.
Exactly! People have been saying ND will be forced into a conference for years. And guess what, it's never happened. ESPN just posted an article that ND has no reason to make any moves for the foreseeable future.Jack has said it several times publicly. Maintaining Independence is the goal, as long as the following can be sustained
1. Access to the playoff (check)
2. TV revenue (from what it looks like NBC is going to pony up)
3. Scheduling (This one could get tricky as conferences continue to consolidate. If they go to conference only scheduling this may hinder being able to schedule quality opponents?
But also keep in mind that we've never seen conferences blowing up - or ready to blow up (ACC) like we're seeing now. This is a whole new and different CF world. As I mentioned, my biggest fear going forward is scheduling top teams as almost all of them will be tied into a huge conference.Exactly! I was hoping we'd join the ACC in full and "save" that conference. But now it's starting to look too late for that, so we may be forced into the Big Ten instead, eventually. If we;re being honest, not much longer and it will boil down to the conferences not scheduling us. There were some on this forum pushing to go all in on the ACC years ago. Imagine had they done that, the predicament ND would be in today. Unable to negotiate their own media rights deal and almost no way out of the ACC agreement.Exactly! People have been saying ND will be forced into a conference for years. If we joined, they could renegotiate that lousy agreement. That's grounds for renegotiation. There were some on this forum pushing to go all in on the ACC years ago. That boils down to a simple question of whether our big game was on NBC or ABC. The Peacock gets about half the ratings of the mouse for college football. That is because for more than a generation we were the only show on that channel. We’re pretty powerful but when it comes to viewership which TV networks focus on, I believe we rank about #6. The game of mousetrap was set in motion by the Universities of Oklahoma and Georgia. They sued the NCAA in 1980s and won back control of tv rights; and were both placed on probation as retaliation. Before that conference realignment was a simple matter handled by athetic directors. After that it became a game of tv rights poker.Have read on Twitter that some fans blame Notre Dame and Texas for all this upheaval. The reason being the ND/NBC deal and the Texas All Long Horn channel. Not at all the current day greed of the Universities and networks.
As said above it would be a different tv deal. They would probably extend it out to 2050 and up the payout. Also ND would have more of a say at the ACC table and could address Clemson/FSU as peers. There were some on this forum pushing to go all in on the ACC years ago. Doesn't come close academically. So why is no one in the admin, or their media mouthpieces, discussing if ND could work in the SEC?
That trope went out the window years ago with your pick of: Nebraska to the BUG, Louisville to the ACC, Utah to the PAC, Texas to the SEC.Doesn't come close academically.
Opposite ends of the academic spectrum..
Many football players in the SEC go there because they can major in the NFL.
Tell that to Father Jenkins, Jack Swarbick, Pete Bevacqua, and the BOT.That trope went out the window years ago with your pick of: Nebraska to the BUG, Louisville to the ACC, Utah to the PAC, Texas to the SEC.
Then we need to bring Stanford and UNC to really stick it to the BUGTell that to Father Jenkins, Jack Swarbick, Pete Bevacqua, and the BOT.
ESPN does not talk about Notre Dame full time to the SEC because they know there is a snowball's chance in hell of that happening.
