Last year they were favored at home and beat ND.

This year the talking heads are giving them a lot of love because they have so many returning seniors on the team. They will feature 8 senior starters on defense that includes the best DE duo in the country. Their DE Bradley Chubb is a sure fire first round draft pick on a very strong defensive front and is rated by some services as the number one DE in the country.

Their QB has a lot of experience and played at Boise before coming to NCST. Their skilled positions feature a super amount of speed. Don't be surprised if NC State comes to South Bend this year at 6-1 or 7-0 and is a pick em or favored over the Irish.

And remember this game comes right after the USC game. Yeah, it's a home game but it's really tough for any team to get up for a big game following an emotional game against a rival. Anyone predicting an easy win is in for a big surprise. Keep in mind they are used to facing Elko's defense.

Im from Raleigh. Ncsu lives in the past and right now they brag all the time about ND never scoring a TD and being 2-0. Yes they know the defense of Elko, but the biggest change to that defense will be the difference in player ability. Ultimately ND has to tackle and not give up big plays, while also not getting steamrolled through the middle. For the last 20 years ND has not been physical enough to stop big running teams inside or fast enough to stop big plays over the top. I want to see those two areas addressed whether through scheme or recruiting.

Mirer03.......

Speaking of living in the past, this former Lou Holtz team did manage to win the Independence Bowl last year. There is lots of talk by the media pundits about the NCSU defense. What can you tell us about their offense?

NOTE: With the hurricane NCSU did hold ND to only 3 points last year in spite of the fact that ND had a highly mobile QB that was drafted into the NFL. Then they followed that up with a 41-17 win in the Independence Bowl.

Anything can happen in football, but I don't see the point in fretting about a team that was 7-6 last year. Maybe having a lot of seniors back is a bad thing for them. The only reason they beat us last year is because we employed one of the most inane strategies imaginable. I look at it that Elko is familiar with what they do and that gives us a distinct advantage.

Hear, hear! To say it was difficult to imagine the play calling last year is a gross understatement. None the less, NCSU is a formidable team this year and is 2-0 over ND.

umm, what's wrong with the above? (hint: fret....)

Duo, I have often wondered if you're a Louisville or FSU fan? You may even be an independant who just enjoys talking college football. I enjoy going to other team's message boards from time to time.

Think being an FSU fan that you'd be more concerned about the Noles entertaining Louisville at home. After all the Cards destroyed the Noles last year 63-20. Will the Cards be sneaky this year and best FSU at home even after losing their bowl game to LSU?

Will Jimbo's hair plugs survive if the Noles meet up with two or three sneaky teams?

The ACC is ND's little batch.
ND told the ACC, "hey, shut your mouth and listen. We are putting all of our sports in the ACC that we want. The ones you suck at (like Hockey) we will put elsewhere. The football team will NOT join your conference, but we will take one of your bowl slots if we want it each year. And you will pay us for it. And we will keep all the NBC money from home games & take a percentage of ACC money for road games. And you will agree & shut your mouth, because you as an entire conference don't have the pull ND does."
And the ACC stuck their tail between there legs & said, "yes Sir Mr. Notre Dame. And thank you for allowing us to do so."

The reality hurts, doesn't it?

I'd just like to see Notre Dame fans have a little more swagger than to worry about a team that was 7-6 team from last year. If anything, the ridiculous way we lost last year should be motivation for revenge. We're playing at home and the climate and logistics will be substantially different. No offense, but I don't think a bowl loss to a team quarterbacked by Phil Rivers has much relevance.

Verban.....

Re: "I'd just like to see Notre Dame fans have a little more swagger than to worry about a team that was 7-6 team from last year."

It works both ways............by using your exact same logic should Wolfpack fans worry about a team that was 4-8 from last year that they beat 10-3 and have a 2-0 record against? And considering that ND lost their QB for an early out to the NFL and are replacing him with a QB with little or no experience?

Focusing on teams like USC and disregarding teams like NC State is simply a mistake. After all ND was 2-3 vs. the ACC schedule last year.

Are you a gopher for Jim Swofford or something? For crying out loud, you sound like the biggest "yes" man for the ACC that this great country has ever known. An unpaid PR guy for the ACC if you will. You had no problem with ND focusing on Georgia and disregarding Temple. A great policy to live by is to worry about NCST on October 28th. And yes, USC is the bigger challenge for ND than NCST.

Just for Duo.

Three Divisions in the ACC, using Winsipedia since schools debate titles (so might be different from your opinion, I'm just using them for every team).

Guess the ACC Division

13 National Titles
Average 875 wins per team
73% win percentage

7 National Titles
Average 592 Wins per team
55% win percentage

18 National Titles
Average 656 wins per team
56% win percentage

Notre Dame Division
Atlantic Division
Coastal Division

They beat ND last year?

A. Brian Kelly beat ND that day

B. It was played in a freaking hurricane

The game film is deep inside a landfill right now. No one won that game.

Indeed, maybe it does work both ways, but I don't care what NC State players or fans think. Let them come in with their own swagger. I thought you were talking from an ND fan's perspective, and my comment would be that we're more talented, we're at home, and we have the motivation of payback so we should win. Yeah, Kizer is no longer on the team, but I look at it with the view that when he played against NC State he was 9 for 26 for 17 yards, a pick, and 5 sacks. That's replaceable. The new kid has little experience at QB, but he's also a 4-star oozing potential. I'm not disregarding NC State, but I feel real confident about our chances.

Verban,,,,,,,,,

Re: "I'm not disregarding NC State, but I feel real confident about our chances."

Very good. Much more realistic.

Now, if a team like NC State sneaks up and bites you following a huge emotional game like USC you can perhaps understand or deal with it a little better. And that would include other situations like road games against BC, MSU, UNC or even Miami depending on their W/L record when ND plays them.

Right now ND is a big question mark. ND could conceivably win all the games just mentioned but conversely could lose all of them as well. That opinion was born out in the recent Coaches Poll rankings.

Duo, I have often wondered if you're a Louisville or FSU fan? You may even be an independant who just enjoys talking college football. I enjoy going to other team's message boards from time to time.

CFB fan. Me too.

ND must win the first 3 games. AT 3-0 they will be very confident going into East Lansing ( BK has little success there) if they can find a way to win that game and are 4-0 the NC states won't have a chance.

CFB fan. Me too.

You are a Nole fan first and foremost.

...though who are you to tell Irish posters what is realistic and what isn't? Seems like all you want to do is stir the pot!

You don't know jack about how the Irish will perform this season and neither do we. I know I'm excited to see what Elko can do with this defense.

Yeah, the Irish went 4 and 8 last year but three of those games were lost by three points, one by a single point, two by seven points and one by eight points. The only blow out was to SC and that was by 18 (which is still better than being highly ranked and getting blown out 63-20). Yes, the Irish sucked donkeys last year but if a fan wants to be optimistic about ND fortunes against other teams, so what? It's the players and coaches that need to keep their nose to the grind stone and think about one game at a time.

My view hasn't changed. Perhaps I just didn't express it well before. I'm extremely excited and confident about this team. They lost several games in a freakish manner last year (including NC State), and have made some inspired off season changes. The coaches poll means little to me. It's going to be a fun year.

It's not you, it's Duo the Noel fan. He's what our former mod (WAX) would call a hair puller (subtle flamer).

I'm with you. It's going to be a fun year and looking forward to seeing the 2017 Irish football season.

LOL........well put Alice! ( "sucked donkeys"..........bwahahahahahahahahah)

To Duo's credit, he's doing a great job of deftly flying under the radar. If you and several others hadn't challenged his allegiance based on long time familiarity, I never would have known.

Verban..........

It's pretty simple..........talk some football, poke a little fun, try to look at the other side of the coin in a more realistic light, find some humor, enjoy CFB as a whole and enjoy a lot of really good games. And BTW, it's pretty easy to see who has never played sports...........they would be "murdered" in a locker room atmosphere. In the locker room anyone that displays the slightest sensitive spot is sure to be teased about it to the max by the entire team. It's a tough kind of humor for some but really good fun for most. That's where many of the player's nick names originate and there are some real "doozies". Not a good place for the thin skinned or faint of heart. Being drafted into the Army is a lot the same. Enjoy the season, it's a Rivals board! ;)

I've had his scene for a long time. He has had wrong info mixed with slanted agenda info mixed with giving ND the middle finger with a smile. It's obvious. He's not that witty so it's not hard to spot. I don't take his "friendly approach" serious. Especially when he's trying to charm our long time Lady Irish contributor.

Alice and I have talked back and forth for years. I always Treat Alice with respect even when she is giving me the raspberries. We talk on this board and sometimes on other boards. In fact, Alice is better at handling locker room humor than many of the message board posters (most of the time.....:D).

I'm not buying your gentle ribbing with a wink and a nod. It's way too obvious what your doing.

I think there's a great chance N.C State will come into South Bend 7-0 if they get past Louisville.

You really dont understand ncsu is the little brother School of the ACC. They still speak of being a basketball power and a sleeping giant of the ACC in football. Being 2-0 against ND is a huge deal to their fanbase.

Of course, it is. Can you imagine if they went 3-0. OMG, their fan base would be delirious! LOL!

Keep your eyes on number 9.

I feel sorry for duoche. Anyone that scours ND's existence searching for some angle to stir the pot on the team's message board 24/7 must have a pretty pathetic life. Not sure why any of us respond w/ anything substantive. All it does is validate his dumbass posts in his mind. He's a flamer, and not a very good one.

Other boards? Must not have been memorable.

....and please, it's sport's board humor, not locker room humor!

With the amount of time spent here, I'm guessing that Bama doesn't have a free football

I forsee a spanking by the Irish.

Nah, Louisville smacked NC State around without mercy last year.

And remember FSU will play NC State right after the Miami game. Duo had a thread a few weeks back explaining how Miami, as the favorite to win the ACC Coastal Division, will be a formidable opponent this year.

Yeah, it's a home game for FSU but it's really tough for any team to get up for a big game following an emotional game against a rival. Anyone predicting an easy win is in for a big surprise. Keep in mind NC State went into the game as the underdog and nearly beat FSU last year.

All I can say is that I know who I'd be putting my money on if I were to bet on the NC State/FSU game.

The game that I'm looking at is Stanford. In the last 10 years ND has a 4-6 record against them. Coach Kelly is 0-3 against them on the road and 2-5 overall against them. The thing that grabs me is the opponent the week before-Navy. They usually eat our DL lad's knees up in that game. Plus you must adjust from the bone back to a conventual offense. Great planning Jack.

Sure, and I see that, but FSU didn't cover the spread against NC State last year. And the OP, our resident FSU fan, posted that he wouldn't be surprised if NC State came into South Bend 7-0. So clearly he must have his doubts about the FSU-NC State game for the very same reasoning that he suggested the NC State game will be sneaky tough for the Irish.

Personally, I don't think much of the idea that NC State is "sneaky" tough when it comes to the Irish. Given we have yet to beat them, the Irish are more likely to be the "sneaky tough" team in this series this year. Its really just a bunch of silly nonsense. It might be a different story when it comes to FSU.

NC State's a solid team, but a win against them won't be signature win for anybody.

I think if you prodded Duo, he'd tell you that he thinks FSU will win that game. If you think NC State will win, more power to you. I'll even acknowledge your sagacity if that turns out to be the case. Heck, if they beat FSU and then lose to ND, that will boost ND's SOS.
