I recall Texas having some trouble coming out of the gate the last few years. Any reason to believe this is the year the open strong and deal ND a loss in game 1?

I'm a little nervous for two reasons. First, ND doesn't have a great history in game #1 (NW'rn, USF, etc). Second, I believe Strong will get it fixed at Texas. He's a heck of a good coach, but the cupboard was a little bare down there. I'm sure he's looking at this game as a chance to build confidence for his young team.

I think they're a year away. It's still Texas, and there's no shortage or four star players on that roster, but based on how they looked last season, I'd be surprised if they won.

If the players aren't feeling it then it could be a long day. But, what's not to get pumped about as a player (and fan)? National TV, opening day, home game, legendary Texas. Come out of the gate strong and finish.

No reason to believe that.

Their biggest problem is at QB and OL. Neither appears to be improved yet, albeit still a ways to go till Sept. Plus they lost a lot of talent off the defense, which is only reason they won the 6 games they did last year (weakest 6 teams on their schedule). It'll take Strong a few years to replenish the roster. They desperately need better talent at the QB position and its not on the roster yet.

^ yes;
wherever there are weaknesses, Texas's weakness is weaker than ND's
wherever there are strengths, ND's strengths are stronger than Texas's

A Texas win would be a huge upset.

from I remember coach strong had to clean house last spring and kick some players off of a team that wasn't all that great to begin with when he got there so he probably is still trying to get things there in order. give him a couple of years and they'll probably to be able to play with anyone but definetly not this year. remember that there having qb issues right now also but so are our irish I guess

They have not lost their season opener at home or on the road since 1999.

Now mind you they usually play a far more inferior opponent for their opener. But still that is a long time since an opening loss.

who was the poster that each Thurs before a game offerred a detail position by position group analysis?

maybe someone with knowledge of Texas can get something like that going; but I am not sure if even Charlie Strong knows his roster yet!

Charlie Strong is a great coach. He is going to turn Texas around just hope it is not in the season opener.

The Texas QB play last year make our QB's look like R Wilson, T Brady, A Rodgers rolled into one.

Swoopes was never the guy he isn't the athlete of VY and is a worse passer. I think Heard is going to be a disappointment too at least until next year. The expectations on Heard are just unreal but the OL is getting better there and that will help.

This coming season is looking eerily similar to the lead up of the 2011 season. ND is coming off of a disappointing season, there is a lot of pressure on Kelly to win big, there is a QB competition that'll go into August, and the first game of the year is at home against a very capable opponent. Hopefully in year six Kelly has learned from his past mistakes. We don't need to see his face looking purple again.

Most everyone thought ND would pound USF in the lead up to that 2011 season opener. Everyone has talent these days. There isn't one opponent on ND's schedule that we can look past.

Texas is depleted and I think Strong is in over his head. Time will tell. The Irish will win big.

ND -11. Not looking good for UT.

Still hate UT. :)

Re: ND -11. Not looking good for UT.

The reason I started this thread was because this game worries me greatly.

Why?
1.Strong is a great coach, it wont be long before he has his team playing really well.
2.I cannot be conviced that Texas doesnt have some talent.
- They never have to leave the state to get good players.

Here are the unknowns I feel ND has ...
1. The Oline, despite all of their talent, has yet to come out and play at the punishing level we all think they should.
2. NDs defense has to be reforged. The group that started last year looked great, how they ended the year looked bad. What are we going to get this year?
3. A good, but still developing WR corp to go with the QB compitition could lead to great things by midseason.
Playing Texas in this opener has me nervous.

I'll guarantee Texas will be in great shape and ready to play physical vs ND. That Louisville team that beat us last year was basically Strongs team.

Well my friend. I'll take ND in all the games but that doesn't mean they will win them all. Wishing upon a star won't cut it. Things have to go almost perfect to even consider a very successful season, let alone a perfect one. No suspensions. No injuries. No transfers. Inoculated from the turnover and penalty virus. Kids make plays when it counts. BK doesn't get in the way. All this good stuff has to happen because ND has little room for error. Then you have Texas, G Tech, Clemson, Navy, USC, Pitt, BC, and Stanford all with something to say about it. I am really trying to be upbeat about the 2015 season, but...............

ND has struggled mightily with the likes of Navy, North Carolina, Pitt, and Northwestern in recent years. There's no reason to think they can't end up doing the same against Texas.

One thing ND might have going for it is that the QBs have started out on fire in the last couple years (Tommy Rees and Everett Golson). Both looked unstoppable in the openers as I recall. But alas, they both faded terribly as the seasons went on. But, still.

Coach Saban and coach Meyer's are great coaches

At this point coach Strong is a good coach at best

Jack has it correct. Hope for a perfect seadon is being a fan! Expecting it is being delusional.
I have high hopes with the addition of a proven and seemingly autonomous OC; and the addition of Gilmore for the DL. it is hoped the coaching gafaws of recent seasons will not be repeated; no more what was termed "shooting ourselves in the foot"

ND lost 5-6 final regular season games. Improvements have to be on the field- not a message board. No Excuses.
