Notre Dames Ultimate Goal?

Honestly, I think their ultimate goal is to make as much money off of football as possible. I think they are smart enough to realize they have to have a respectable product but it doesn't have to be great.

Then why didn't we join the Big 10 and go for the guaranteed biggest money?

Because a lot of the money we get is from alum who want us to stay independent. So while we might make a couple million more by joining the Big# we would probably lose when you factor in donations.

A lot of good points made in this thread. I agree with those that suggest the number of subway fans will dramatically decline as we age and pass. The Catholic connection to ND among the younger generation is clearly on the decline as we become a more secular nation. The decline of the subway alums ultimately equals the decline of the National brand and appeal of ND on the national stage. It seems to me that the choice ND has to make is pretty straightforward. Either make the hires and changes necessary to compete annually for the NC, or join a conference. If they do the former, a whole new generation of subway alums will emerge, not because of the Catholic or traditional connection, but because they are fans of a dominant perennial winner. Absent this, the import of the subway alum base will diminish, and they will become a regional team by default.

The ultimate goal is to keep improving the school and win as many games as possible. IMO the right coach can win a NC at ND. If Saban left Alabama today and coached in South Bend for ten seasons until retirement, I would bet he would win two NCs.

I'm a South Bend townie. My grades would not allow me to get into ND. So I graduated from Ball State. Many of us townies are getting tired of forking up 150 bucks per ticket to see a bad product. The stadium holds over 80k and townies make up a lot of those numbers. I truly believe benches will start to show soon. The U tickets are going for $50 for a pair around here. Pathetic...

This is nothing new. Since the stadium expanded 20 years ago, tickets for most games have been readily available at far less than face.

I agree with all of this, but I don't think the real problem is academics per say. It's not the HS grades or test scores, but the core courses needed to enter. That is where some special case adjustments need to be constructed. A special program that fills in those HS courses that are lacking with the FY studies. It may take 5 or more years to complete the program, but that pathway to enter is now available.

Don't go. Who is forcing you to?

Wait for it........ There we go some board members complain about what is clearly a declining program and is met with the "don't let the door hit you in the a$$". Reply. The true fans I mean the committed fans care so much that what's going on is truly upsetting them. What other great brand in sports goes out of their way to make it tougher I dare say impossible to succeed. If you are happy with the last 20 years you might be a Notre Dame fan. But, you're not a Notre Dame football fan.
