Why does it seem like "hosting a playoff game" is the ultimate goal at ND these days?

Isn't the goal to win an NC?

ND has been ranked 5th-7th before ... (in fact they've been ranked three times in the top 4 under BK in the FBS postseason)

the goal shouldn't be to "host a playoff game" but to win the playoff.

Just kind of getting tired of the "hosting" rhetoric that seems to be going around ND nation right now.

I can see it now

"2024 was successful bro, we hosted a playoff game"

you get nothing for hosting a playoff game or winning the first 3 rounds in the playoff.

you think the top dogs in the BIG10 and SEC are hyping up "the chance to host a playoff game" ? no .. they got their minds dead set on bringing home a national title victory to their fans.

Why does it seem like you are a complete loser, and not a real Notre Dame fan?

Why do teams in conferences have a goal of winning the conference championship. Shouldn't the goal be NC's?

its fans like you that perpetuate the mediocrity at Notre Dame.

ND is the big bad wolf of college football ... when did it become acceptable to be the perpetual underdog/Cinderella program of college football ?

So answer the question, why is the goal of Alabama, OSU, Oregon, Clemson, Georgia, insert any conference team to win their conference? Shouldn't it be to win NC's?

If any of those programs outside of Clemson won their conference but didnt win an NC or at least get to the playoff final .. all of those fan bases would be pissed off/feel let down .. hell it might even cost coaches on their staff their job ... it would be enough to get those programs to expand their talent budget and bring in some more stars to get them over the top.

At ND the local media people are already setting the expectations for its fans "hey we hosted a playoff game...what else do you want you entitle ND fan!?" and fans like you lap it up.

I'm looking forward to hosting for the following reasons:

1. I'll be at the game. Can't wait to take it in.
2. We should be able to protect home field and advance to Rd 2
3. Recruits will attend,
4. If we play an SEC Team or Miami....I think they'll have a hard time playing in snow and cold temps.

1 game at a time Chase. Secure home field for Rd 1, and go from there.

Dude, get a life. There are far more important things in life than college football. I want ND to win a National Championship, but I have zero control over the team, the athletic department and the school itself. You post on here like a 12 year old. When I was 12 I'd get pissed if my teams didn't do well, now there are far more better things to enjoy in life than to get frustrated over something you have zero control over.

Give me proof.

Who specifically is saying that a home game is the ultimate goal for this team?

You're manufacturing this narrative.

I dont really have any specific links or resources on this one.

I follow a lot of ND outlets on x/twitter. I listen to a lot of podcasts. And everybody is talking up "hosting a playoff game" as this ultimate achievement at Notre Dame or something. Its talked about as if it would define a successful season. I think Notre Dame/ND PR/ND insiders are trying to set this expectation/narrative.

"Hey we might not be bama/georgia/osu/texas/oregon/etc. (the new modern powers in college football) but we hosted a playoff game this season!"

My instinctive response when i hear this rhetoric is an eye roll so hard that my eye balls feel like theyre going to come out of their socket.

At ND its no longer about recruiting the best talent from coast to coast in the top football states, developing consensus all americans, winning heisman trophies, graduating first round talent to the NFL in bunches, and competing for the most prestigious hardware the sport has to offer.

Modern ND is about scooping up the tier 1s castoffs/rejects/Plan Bs & Cs (on the cheap because of "ideals" and "values"™), watering down the schedule vs crap teams in the ACC & G5, finishing the season with the most hollow 10+ win season possible, "hosting a playoff game", and then happily getting smoked by a modern power in college football that is actually investing in a top tier product.

But hey, I hear the girls fencing team is top notch at ND these days

You are the only person I'm aware of that has said that. Most folks understand that making the CFP is the most important step. If you don't do that nothing else matters. It's incremental. Your goal is to take outlandish, generally uninformed positions here. You're due for a fresh set of downs no ?

Another idiotic post. You are the only one saying it is ND's goal to host a playoff game. It's like you make up stories to fit your narrative. This is a terrible post even by your incredibly low standards.

You don’t seem to understand the problem with getting ahead of yourself instead of taking one step at a time

There is a progression to winning the NC

It starts with the season, Then hosting a playoff game, and then moving on to the NC

I do not expect Notre Dame to win a title in 2024. I hope they do. Winning 4 straight games is IMO unrealistic for this particular team.

The expectation for this fan is to make the playoff and win a game.

Because it would be awesome, rather than playing on the road. And yes, it is the ultimate goal. ND does not want, and has no interest in actually winning a national championship. Let's be clear. They just want to host playoff games, that's it. Everything is geared towards that goal. It's plastered all over the football facilities, this mantra, this very specific objective, so there's no mistake. A championship is neither here nor there, not really concerned about that at all. We just want to host a 1st round playoff game. Every season, every year the program sets that as its ultimate and annual and perennial goal. If we do win a championship that would be fine, but that would simply make it easier to achieve our real goal of hosting 1st round playoff games in future seasons, on account of the enhanced prestige and improved recruiting.

I consume a lot of ND football related content from the local ND insiders. Read a lot of ND related commentary from fans online. It seems like a lot of people are talking about "hosting a playoff game" as if this would be some major accomplishment in and of itself.

The goal is to win a national title at Notre Dame! As an independent there is literally nothing else. Its national title or bust. Every year ND doesn't win a national title, the season is a literal failure/waste.

The last 35 years are a literal non factor in the history of ND Football. This entire time period will be a completely overlooked blur/non factor in the annuls of ND football. NOTHING has been achieved. Why do I feel like the only ND fan left on the planet that gives a sh!t about this?

Where is the ND fans & ND brass sense of ambition ? Everybody just seems so lethargic and resigned to playing 2nd fiddle to the programs that are actually relevant in the national championship discussion in college football. And this "hosting a playoff game" rhetoric is driving me crazy. F hosting a playoff game. We're here to win the entire thing!

This program is a revenue leader in the sport. This program has every institutional advantage you can possibly think of as a program with more eyeballs on it than almost any other in the entire sport. We are not some indie band, we're the Fn Beatles! Why won't the administration of this football program start acting like it!?

This i understand.

My point isn't to say "hosting a playoff game is worthless and we should want to be the away team in the playoffs"

My point is that there seems to be a lot of rhetoric/expectation setting going on out there (and even around here) that if ND hosts a playoff game, it would be a goal in and of itself that fans should be satisfied with (regardless of the rest of the performance that takes place in the playoffs). THIS is the rhetoric that im speaking to in this topic.

You're a fool. In order to win a championship, you need to first make the playoffs. It's really not that difficult to comprehend. Are you really that stupid?

I really like this take. We have collectively as a fan base accepted mediocrity.

........And? I mean what's the alternative? We're fans. What control do we REALLY have over how good the team is. You either stop watching, or you accept it. I really don't think the people in decision making positions need the fans to tell them whether or not the team is good. It's a weird way to even look at it anyway as the overwhelming majority of fans of ANY sports team "accept" what they are, regardless of the results on the playing field because to most people, that's all it is. It's just a hobby to take up free time and the results are what they are. And the hardcore fans aren't happy either way; either the team is losing and they're upset or the team is winning and they're upset because they're not winning by enough.

I've certainly accepted "mediocrity" with football at Notre Dame, and why? Because that's what they've been for a loooooong time now. Mediocre with some legitimately good seasons sprinkled in here and there. But a real chance to win the championship? That's not what Notre Dame has consistently been for a very long time now and if someone wanted to be really critical of Notre Dame football you can go even further back and say they've won 4 National Championships in the last 74 years, 3 of those 4 in or before 1977. They're not a modern powerhouse program. They're just not. But hey, they're a "name". So yippee and all.

Anyone on this board that was alive the last time they won a championship is AT LEAST 36 years old. But the expectation is to win championships? In what reality? Even if you're a consistently good team, it's REALLY hard to win a championship. In any sport. And Notre Dame is not a "consistently good team" in this new era of college football where there's a ton of parity and they're not the only team on national television every week.

I'm not saying they can't win a championship. They can. But the days of them living up to the expectations that a # of you here put on them....I don't know man. I just don't know what reality you're seeing. Because those days are long gone. They're not just another name to you because you love Notre Dame, and whatever. That's fine. But what the hell do 18 year olds coming out of high school right now care about the "tradition" and name of Notre Dame when they have to go to their grandfather for it, and even he is getting to the point where it's getting hard to remember.

Making the playoffs is mediocrity? Got it.
notre-dame-national-championships-banner-unsigned-8x10-photo-13866087579714_735x735.jpg

They should change this sign to "Notre Dame Fighting Irish 12-team Playoff Seasons" and "Play Like A 12-team Playoff Team Today"

So they can cash in on these "playoff seasons" while winning 10+ games vs the garden variety schlep in the ACC & G5.

Making the playoffs is mediocrity? Got it.
Focusing the conversation on just getting a home playoff game and not winning all the playoff games plus championship is an indication of how low the entire fan base has their sights set. Like collectively we as a whole don't truly believe ND can win the playoffs, therefore a home playoff game is the best that ND can do in a lot of the fans mind's. There's really no talk of winning that home playoff game if you notice. Getting a home playoff game is considered a successful season at ND. And in reality that is the case. ND has failed more on the big stage in recent memory than have succeeded. So it literally makes sense. But there is really no logical correlation to voicing this and being a lesser fan. It's reality.
