The two-time defending national champion Notre Dame men’s lacrosse team got another rude wakeup call on Saturday.
No. 7 Syracuse did the dishonors at the JMA Wireless Dome, roaring back from an early 3-0 deficit to the fifth-ranked Irish to post their sixth straight victory, a convincing 14-9 triumph.
The 14 goals are the most allowed this season for Notre Dame (5-3), which got outshot 43-33 and lost 16 of 23 draws. The Orange (9-2) broke a seven-game series losing streak to ND as they tuned up for a showdown next weekend against No. 1 Cornell on Long Island.
Joey Spallina had four goals and an assist to lead Syracuse, which scored nine straight goals after falling behind early. Pat Kavanagh led the Irish attack with two goals and two assists. Devon McLane added two goals, while Jake Taylor and Matt Jeffery each contributed a goal and an assist.
The Irish came into the matchup as the nation’s most efficient offensive team but scored on just 39.3% of their possessions against the Orange.
