Kizer going forward.

Continually, I thought we read that he was very good with the long ball this Spring, but not accurate with the shorter throws. He was no slouch coming out of high school and a good commit. Throwing the winning TD with 12 seconds has to help his confidence and the confidence of his teammates in him. Golson taking snaps this past Spring looms huge. I thought we had a chance to overcome the loss of Jones and Folston, but adding Zaire to this list is probably too much. Next man in is a true Freshman. Scary.
Unrelated, I was really disappointed in the soft play of our corners, particularly Luke.

Thanks Irish Mike --

Tex - Kelly mentioned in the post game that our secondary play w the ball in the air was putrid . Also just like last yr and the yr before the OL performance @ nut cracking time is not there . I don't know if this is scheme related or culture related ( the will to move people out of the box ) 0-10 on 3rd downs 4 of which were 3rd and 2 or less ....and the last one 3rd and 1 at midfield holding a 5 pt lead w 4 min left is UNACCEPTABLE - UNACCEPTABLE !!! Not getting a 4th and 1 in 2 nd qtr let UVA back in the game .

If ND picks up those two conversions GAME IS OVER !!

A bit off subject but I am now left to assume that everyone that sings the praises of our "vaunted " OL are simply going by recruiting rankings and not by game to game evaluation . I am not saying they are bad I simply am not going to heap praise on this unit until they help us win games at nut cracking time . The OL cost us the game last yr vs Louisville . Should have cost us the game yesterday - unacceptable !!

With high level OL play we are up 21-0 and if we convert 4th and 1 in 2nd qtr UVA is toast - finished . ND came out with a terrific game plan moving the ball at will outside the 20 yd line then our MOJO imploded - as a group the staff and players have to do some real soul searching to determine what is behind this groups inability to move the pile in short yardage situations .

Also Luke - Russell - Redfiled - Schumate better start playing the damn ball in the air --watching our secondary play yesterday made me vomit . These are high level athletes - play like it !! Play the god damn ball !!

With having to protect Kizer having the QB running the ball regularly is not an option -- short passes will get KIzer into a rhythm and give him much needed confidence . If Jones is as good as advertised I say he needs to be on the field . Hunter and Robinson need to be targets in short passing situations as well. This will keep defenses off balance and take pressure off of Fuller . If ND can establish a rhythm w short passes this will also also open things up for Procise on the ground

I'm a huge Kelly guy but I want to remind coach that Robinson - Hunter and Alize Jones are part of the offense too .

On a positive note Kizer was 8-12 yesterday at a time when Va KNEW he was passing . Zaire was 7-18 .. Kizer might be OK . As you stated Tex that TD to Fuller was money and can only help this kids Mojo ..BTW if Kizer is legit Kelly will be facing another HUGE QB controversy in the spring .

The experts always say that teams improve from week one to week two. It's interesting that we actually played worse from week one to week two. How can that be?

Its a head scratcher. I'd say that Texas's offense was just that horrible, but Texas put up 42 against Rice last night. Different QB, but same OL.

In a very difficult situation he came up big. Let's give the kid a chance. So far, so good.

I read during camp that Kizer had some days where he was better than Zaire . Passing the ball yesterday he did.

I saw some clips of Kizer running the ball in H.S .,,,nothing flashy but he looked very athletic . He made some nice plays on the game winning drive

yep; he can see the field more easily. He has leadership qualities, athletic, a good arm ... the offense is in good hands with Him and Wimbush!

Prayers for both DK and the Defense (that the players can overome poor coaching applications)

I tell you what. He didn't look scared out there. He is by all accounts a smart kid and hard worker. He isn't a Kiel or a Bryant. He waited for his turn and now he wants to perform for his teammates...as he did yesterday.

I agree. While Zaire had had a lot more reps in practice, he only had three starts. Its not like Kizer needs to replace a three year starter and returning Heisman winner. And even with the hype around Zaire, Kelly has been saying that we didn't need Zaire to be the reason we won, he just needed to to not be the reason we lost. The same is true for Kizer - He's still got a strong supporting cast, much of which was under utilized for most of the game last week. We don't need him to be great, we just need him to be good.

When I was talking about different QB same OL I was referring to Texas. They posted 42 points yesterday. Different QB, but same OL that we manhandled last week. It leaves me scratching my head about this week's defensive performance.

Kizer played better than Zaire did yesterday - passing the ball it wasn't even close ( 7 - 18 vs 8-12 ) and completed by far BY FAR given the circumstances arguably the best pass I can ever remember an ND QB making
  • 15 seconds left
  • pass rush in his face
  • off back foot
  • 50 yd strike to Fuller for game winning score
Trumps any pass I can ever remember an ND qb making . I read earlier today that it's the first time in Notre Dame history that a QB made a game winning TD pass of that length in the last minute of a game .

I'd prefer if we went to a more conservative offense now that we have a freshman at QB. Kizer played great in leading the comeback win yesterday, but he's still a freshman. We have the OL to turn this team into a power running team instead, so let's do it. And use Luatua as the blocking fullback.

Kizer did come up big; he gave us a glimpse of ND past! When the Irish seemed to come up with incredible effort or heroes week upon week. Most ND fans had bypassed him in the QB discussion, He is an impressive young man in many respects. Gotta be a Kizer fan!
