Seriously some of you people are ridiculous. Kelly is not perfect but what is he supposed to do? Actually since some of you think you should be the coach instead, what would you be doing with the QB's he has been dealt since he has been at ND? Golson was the best QB he has had to this point and it seems like he has done a decent job. Who knows how Zaire would have done but Kizer is showing why he was 3rd on the depth chart in April. He has average accuracy, runs well, and up until this game was making decent decisions with the ball but he isn't Joe Montana like Bodizephax claimed following the Virginia game. Thankfully he has talent around him or we wouldn't be 7-1 right now.

Furthermore people keep talking about how much talent Kelly has but that is only partly true. If you go over the past 4 years we have lost many players, some who would have been starting and making an impact, to transferring and others who committed and then changed their minds. Our recruiting classes have all been ranked higher than should have if you look at the players we recruited and who actually stayed at ND, oh and don't forget about the suspensions and injuries as well.

Sorry but Kelly has been a good coach and if we can get a stud QB (maybe Kizer becomes that guy), an above average secondary, and some pass rushers we would be a top team. Regardless we are 7-1 with a narrow loss to Clemson on the road. We have 3 tough road games left but we have a shot at being 11-1, yet I can still imagine some on here will cry about Kelly as coach.

A little excessive consider you are speaking toward faceless words don't you think?

No sir, I'm tired of the baseless attacks on a good coach. Kelly is not perfect but he is not Ty or Weis. Fans were calling for Holtz head now he is infallible. This fan base is insufferable, and I despise many people from the ND fan base. I love Notre Dame but I truly despise the clueless arrogant fans. I have more anger at the arrogant ND fans than when ND fails on the field..

This is exhibit A. Ohhh he is here 6 years so he should automatically win 11 games. We have lost 1 game this season to the #3 team in the nation, yet this guy is sooooo angry. We beat USC and an undefeated team tonight. We are in great position to have a matchup against Stanford for a chance to go to the playoffs.

This chump is mad though. clueless dbags like this is exactly what I am talking about.

You are clueless because you are ignoring the fact that we have lost only 1 game this year and are still in contention for the playoffs. You are running averages of past years while ignoring the fact that we are still in the hunt for the playoffs.

You sir are a pessimist and I pity you for it. What makes you a Dbag is your bold font that ND should win 11 games. There is no certainty in college football, it is very competitive. Look at Alabama losing to Ole Miss. scUM giving the game away to MSU. Stanford losing to Northwestern. Any week in college football there is an upset.

It is a very competitive sport. There is no guarantee in this game. The sooner you stop being arrogant and actually evaluate the opponent the we are playing the less dissapointed you will be.

Bottom line is ND has 1 loss and still has a chance for the playoffs. No need to be calling for Kelly's head when we are still in contention. That is just ignorant.

And you are a Dbag for not noting that Bama has won 3 Championships in last 5 years. (Bama wins 12-14 games almost every year. We win 9). Dbag read again I said I would be happy with 11-1. I'm glad we are 7-1 this year but like I said BK didn't join just this year so DBag don't cherry pick and show his 7-1 record but ignore his 8-5 records. Look at his tenure in its entirety Dbag. by the way DBag it was Caps not bold letters.

You are not bringing up any thing new with your BS comments like its competitive sport no shi8. Its competitive for everyone. LSU, Bama, Oklahoma, Ohio State, Oregon consistently perform year in and year out we just come up with excuses each year and always look forward to next year. (we are too young, too many injuries, competition is too tough blah blah).

Now watch you run with well Oregon already has X amount of losses this year. The point is look at their last 8-10 year record and look at our record. Every deserves a mulligan in a rebuilding year etc but we are always in rebuilding phase). I hope we go 11-1 and even if we somehow limp our way into playoffs watch us get blown out like 2012. Its not being pessimist its being realist because this is what we are for last 20 years.

Lastly DBag don't make up shi8 about calling for BK's head.. show me where I called for his head? You hear what you want to hear it seems. So i guess only ignorant person here is you. When you show me anywhere i called for his head I will own up to it. Dbag i said he is a major upgrade from last 3 coaches but he is no Nick Saban or Urban Meyer. I say this with great degree of disappointment because given his history in coaching i really thought he would elevate himself to the level of those great coaches

Wow man you need to take a breather on college football. You have already relegated us to losing. Seriously just stop watching. You can't handle college football and will be much happier for it.

You can whine and bitch about the 8-5 records all you want. The 12-0 record stands out to me above all that pessimism. Even though we lost we still were in the championship game. All your negative BS will never take away from that.

We beat LSU last year, Oregon has never made a championship game, we went 1-1 against Oklahoma. Keep trying to make ND under Kelly to be a train wreck. It isn't .

Lets just ignore all the positives and focus on the negatives. That is why you are a Dbag.

Man are you really that dumb?

Do you know Oregon made championship game just last year and lost to Ohio state?
They also were in another one about 3-4 years back and lost a close one to Auburn?

They also won multiple BCS bowls (at least 3 if i recall correctly)... while our biggest claim to fame in last 20+ years is a blow out loss to Bama in NCG or a bowl win to 8-5 LSU team last year. Like i stated before i am glad that we are 7-1 this year. But the way Op started the thread he made it seem like when people complain its without a reason which is just not the case. We had a last play miracle win against UVA and narrow escape today against temple. Teams in the past who perform like this to inferior competition usually get blown out against quality teams around new year.

I would like BK to have multiple sustained years of 10-11 wins before i anoint him as best thing ever. Not just one 10+ win season in 5 years.

I concede your point about Oregon. I guess I blacked that out since I have been drinking tonight since the Gator game. With that said I will bow out for now. My main point is there is still hope for this season to make the playoffs. Have a good night man. Time for me to go to bed.

I hope we make playoffs and beat someone like Bama/LSU when they are at their best (like 12-1 or so). At that point we would have completed our 22 year circle back to where we belong (on the top).

I'll take an 11 win season every year even if it meant we had to lateral 8 times in the closing seconds to win each of the 11 games. Wasn't it Lou who said at ND they don't want you to just win, they want you to win big? That's an unfairly high expectation to have on any team. Even the best teams have close calls against mediocre competition. Look at Ohio State this year!

do you honestly believe bama and nd have an even playing field when it comes the ability to recruit talent ?

see I think nd is now at the point where they can compete with anyone at any time. it's been a long long time since they've been there. you play the games and see what happens. this assumption that nd deserves or belongs at the top is silly. the landscape of college football has changed dramatically in the last 20 years for many reasons. nd went through a bad stretch of bad hires. anyone who expected Kelly to be meyer or saban were silly to start with. those guys are all time greats. last time I checked only Rockne and leahy fall into that category and maybe ara. Kelly has righted the ship. the program is in the best position its been in since the early 90's. they can line up with anyone. they have lost a dominant nose tackle. their top two running backs, their starting dynamic QB and a have had a host of other injuries. they are 7-1 with the only loss being a close one on the road to a team ranked in the top 5. would I like them to win them all ? of course but I live in the real world. one can either focus on the positive or focus on the negative . as billy joel said " it's a matter of choice ".

I have been trying to learn this year to post less in the heat of the game when it appears my neck muscles involuntarily constrict and cut off the oxygen flow to my brain. That has helped.

I can find lots of things to complain about, including the fact that I don't like the spread as practiced by ND, despite the number of big plays we have. Our defense has not been good for forever, and so on.

But I still enjoy watching the games, and a quick rundown the list of games played yesterday shows there were plenty of close calls, including Stanford and Michigan.

I didn't think Temple's defense would be able to keep up with us, but they were incredibly well coached.

Very relieved after last night..

rivals50 does not understand coaching recruiting, 18-22 year olds and that other teams have good programs, We are not Alabama we will never be able to get kid out high school who can't read. Notre Dame will be in the mix roughly every 3 years

some folks have unrealistic expectations.

Great posts... some people really do have unrealistic expectations as well as a lack of knowledge when it comes to football. I think a lot of fans still act like we are in the 40's, 50's, or 60's when ND dominated but the sport has evolved. Recruiting to me is the largest factor because we just can't compete with the top programs which have lower requirements. Of course coaching is a key as well but as I originally pointed out, I think Kelly has done a very good job with the players he has been dealt. If we can land that special QB, something that has eluded our program for a while, we would have a very strong NC contender. Maybe Kizer or Malik becomes that player but we don't know yet. I already see posts about how Wimbush should be playing lol, it is absolutely ridiculous.

Anyway let's keep a positive outlook and hope for the best. If we can finish out the season with at least 10 wins it will be great, obviously hoping for 11 but we have tough road games coming up, as well as get 1-2 of the 5 star recruits who have visited then it will be a solid season.

so what should be reasonable expectation in year 6 if not 11-1? 8-5? 9-4?
So, in other words, any coach at a school that long should be going 11-1 or thereabouts every year? Good luck with that, no matter what school. Even Alabama and Ohio State fans cannot expect to be in the playoffs every single year.

You should surely have that as a goal, but it's just not a reasonable expectation given injuries, terrible ACC officials reviewing plays, etc.

whats reasonable is to expect your team to be able to compete with anyone. that's where nd is in my opinion. you play your best and hope to win. the other team does have some say in the matter.

Kelly should be fired! He should wins these games by 5 TDs. What a disgrace! Am I in the " some people who have unrealistic expectations crowd " ? (This is sarcasm). For those who think I'm being serious.

Not every year but not once every 5 years either. Should win 10+ games maybe for 3 years and a rebuilding year one year and so on ... with some BCS type bowls participation/wins every 2-3 years.. Wining 10+ games one season and going 8-5 for four years can't be described as a great success like some here want us to believe. ND has had an average performance in last 5 years they were performing below average before then.

Alabama has been in playoffs pretty much ever year/NC game.. They have had just 12 losses in last 8 years.

Ohio state would be playing for NC/playoffs pretty much every year. They couldn't participate one year because of sanctions. Ohio State is 46-3 under Meyer.

Here's a difference, JT Barret gets a 1 game suspension fir DUI. At ND, 1989, Michael Stonebreaker, lost an entire year for driving on campus without a license. There's the difference.

No one is imposing these rules on ND. So don't use them as an excuse.

Based on the fact that he has had

0 BCS type bowl victories
0 NC's
just 1 10+ win season in 5 years
.69% winning percentage for first 5 years

I would say that BK's first 5 year performance is average but some here claim he is a top 5 coach better than guys who have had multiple NC appearances / wins Like Les Miles and Bob Stoops and many more BCS participation/wins.

He is an upgrade over last few coaches for sure and no one is saying he should be fired but i just don't understand how can we claim him to be a top 5 coach with numbers above.

Yeah, to hell with trying to do things the right way. Let's be a football factory like everyone else.

While ND isn't perfect, it at least tries to do the right thing. If you don't understand that this is what makes ND unique, then you haven't a clue what ND is about. Therefore, you should pull for another school that is little more than a semi-pro team that doesn't care about the concept of "student-athlete" or graduating players (e.g, Alabama, Ohio State, LSU, etc...). Such a program seems like it would be more to your liking and ethical standards.

Holtz was 9-3 in his sixth year despite still being in the era of 95 scholarships and having the recruiting advantage from his earlier seasons. Did you belittle Holtz for not continuing his run?

Didn't Stonebreaker break his leg and injure his passenger in a drunken driving accident early in 1989? I believe he was suspended as well, but I don't think it was something as simple as driving on campus without a license.

The reality is if Holtz were coach today, he'd be crucified on this site--and I know I'd be one of those complaining about him.

I believe if coach Kelly had coach Holtz accomplishments from year 1 -6 rivals would not of made such a comment.

ND pays BK less than half of the coaches in the FBS. Harbaugh is making more than six times as much as BK. Who do you propose ND to bring in that can get the Irish into the NC game in the first three years and have a legit shot eight games into the season just three years later? BK makes less money than the coach at IU.

Do you go shopping at Ford and demand a Porsche? There are likely 60+ teams in the country that would trade their higher paid coach for BK.

What I find pathetic is posters on here poisoning the well against other posters. As if someone were to disagree then they are not true Notre Dame fans. That is ridiculous and arrogant.

My thoughts in a completely rational and sober mind:
coaching at ND involves so much more than just on the field performance. At ND you dont have 50+ D1 talented recruits in state. And 1/2 the ones that are want to leave the state cause its boring ol' Indiana. These coaches have to recruit from coast to coast, a strain that no other coach in America has. Do other coaches recruit nationally? Absolutely they do, but most of the best programs if you look, are located in areas that are recruiting hot beds (ie the southest, California, Ohio, Texas, etc) so they poach A FEW targets nationally. They dont require national recruiting to stay relevant. And also, lets be honest, I laugh when someone acts like we should dominate like Bama. Bama had like 3 #1 recruiting class in a row, we are usually between 7-14 with a top 5 every few yrs or so. They probably have 15 5* recruits on their roster, we have like 5. We have good talent, but i wouldnt say we have top tier talent.

Also add in the academic pressures that these kids go through that we never see. The showtime series is giving a glimpse at it, as its different to hear "this week was midterms week" in the pregame, vs seeing KVR in the library in the wee hrs of the night studying after going to a meeting. We'd like these kids to be machines but they're not, they're humans that can succumb to all the pressures they face, not the least of which is a fanbase that complains when they're WINNING games. I wonder how many people on here went to college or remember what it was like. Let alone know what its like at a rigorous school like ND. Midterms week would suck for me and I wasnt going to ND, and top that off w/ you have to also coach/play against your biggest rival that week.

I think its kinda humerous that we're debating this considering when the team wasnt decimated by injuries last year we were 7-2 and once we got some guys back for the bowl game we beat LSU. I mean seriously, did you really think we were going to beat USC last year having to play a 3rd string DB and a Safety that was 1 of the "frozen 5" that sat out half the season? I have no idea what would've happened had we stayed healthy, but to act like well he went 8-5 again last year is again having ridiculous standards. No coach would've done well being dealt that deck. If you look with a healthy team last year and another team this year thats been hit w/ injuries, BK has a 15-3 (see i can make numbers say what i want too). Truth is, this is the same debate we had in the 90's, oh Holtz sucks lets get that Northwestern coach. And for 14 years we wandered in the desert w/ a few mirages to think "we're back". Fire BK or hope he leaves and what "proven coach" worth a lick will come here? In '09 i was here and people couldnt fire CW fast enough to hire Kelly b/c of what he was doing at Cinncy. It would be the same thing again, a hot mid level coach. At some point you have to say maybe its not the coaches, its the institution.
