I am not convinced. If Kelly should be winning 11 games by year 6, then Holtz would have been expected to do the same especially being able to recruit up to 10 more quality players. Just the fact of the 85 scholarship limit has resulted in more parity in college football so I am not convinced Kelly could be expected to have the results that Holtz did. Also remember Kelly's record at Notre Dame is better than Holtz's record in the 85 scholarship era. It seems to me that most fans do not note this when they consider their expectations of Kelly.
That's the thing. Outside of a year that every bounce went Manti Teo's way, Brian Kelly never wins 10+ games in a season. The talent has been there every season since he got here and he continues to bungle games and did so again versus Clemson.

I love this team and have so much fun whenever I'm on campus. I just think Kelly is a jerk and has cost ND many games since arriving at ND. Last time I checked this is still America.

D_Master: Great Post. Unfortunately some fans here have extremely unrealistic expectations. As I add on to your terrific post. Just the dumb comments that we should win every game by 14 or more especially to team like temple. Or the play calling is terrible so we need a new coach or Kelly is a mediocre coach and our record is usually 9-5. You hit out of the park Notre Dame is not an easy job we need to recruit nationally unlike other programs. The same people that wanted Holtz fired are on this board they just have different names but they have the same arguments. We are surrounded by idiots.
It's astonishing the number of people here who post under multiple screen names. Most sites have rules that you can only post under one screen name. Here, posting under multiple screen names is an everyday occurrence.
Look at yourself you certainly sound like one in this post. Why are you imposing your own standard of what's reasonable expectation on others. Team like temple? Temple has won like 1 game against top 10 teams in 60 years i think they are like 1-101-1. When you say team like temple i thought you were talking about Alabama.
We are very lucky that Russel made a play on the ball otherwise that's a touchdown on last play and we are sitting here with 2nd loss today. We were also lucky that hail merry pass on last gasp effort against Virgina worked there's your almost 3rd loss. Teams that are good they don't barely get by on last play of the game. You'll find out how good we are if we somehow make a backdoor entry to playoffs and play someone elite.
Wow, talk about the classic straw man argument. How many people have called for Kelly to be fired? Not many, if any at all. That said Kelly or any coach is not above criticism. No Kelly is not perfect. Yes he's better than the last 3 guys, but then so would hundreds of other coaches so that's not feather in his cap. Criticizing the coach does not equal wanting him fired.
Kelly has certainly elevated the program but I think it's completely fair to say that there have been grievous errors kept this team from winning 10+ games in at least a couple of seasons. He certainly has done well so far but I also think he could have done better.
To question somebody being a fan because they criticize Kelly is preposterous. I could easily counter (being devils advocate) that if you don't criticize Kelly then you are not a true ND fan because you are supporting mediocrity. Any true ND fans wants ND to be among the best in CFB. Winning 8 games a year certainly doesn't put us among the elite so you clearly can't be an ND fan if you support that.
How about we all accept that people have different opinions respect that without call them names because they don't see things your way.

To Paraphrase Coach Holtz: There are 3 games your team will play out of their minds and 3 games that they will be awful in and the rest will be somewhere in-between. Your only hope is when they play awful the talent wins the day. Right now The /irish only played 1 great game and that was against texas, We have played mediocre or awful so far in the rest of the games, I am a glass half full guy I gotta believe we have 2 great games before the bowl games begin. You my friend whine about the irish not winning the way you perceive it should be . Honestly, you have to ask yourself this. Does the coaching staff prepare the players for each game properly? Do we have the talent to compete in case the team is not focused? Do the players buy in? i believe in all cases the answer is yes. The win matters yes I would like to my saturday to be more relaxed and the Irish win easily but I will take the win, To get another coaching staff in here that does not how to deal with Notre Dame expectations would be a disaster. So enjoy the ride
