How the hell did Stanford lose

Ask Herbie. He called it. 11:00AM central start. Tough for a west coast team. If they played now, Stanford would most likely beat the Wildcats.

Watched the entire game. NU was up for the opener at home and Stanford was sleepwalking. Stanford is one good team. Playing that early did not help but the coaches should have knownnthat.

Those things happen occasionally, especially in openers. Right now they're playing as well as any team in the country. However, I'm a little ticked off that they passed us in the AP Poll last week. Their loss may have been early, but it was still a much worse loss than ours. But obviously, we can settle that issue Nov. 28th.

At this point, given our loss to Clemson, I am glad they are ranked ahead of us and hope they remain there until we can play them.

Shaw and staff out coached themselves. When they went traditional power football they moved the ball at will.

But then as is the case far too often with coaches...they think we have to balance to win automatically...even if cute formations and passing aren't working they will keep beating head against wall.

That start time might not have helped but Stanford using the spread offense they were not in sync yet.....
Again though they moved the ball at will in conventional with fullback leading.
Then just kept going away from it far too much.

Get up on Stanford early...2 TD's plus...force Hogan to throw....blitz and hit him constantly.....don't stop attacking...run the ball down their throat....IRISH WIN.

Figure out a way to stop McCaffrey and Stanford can be beaten. I don't see Hogan beating anyone with just his arm. No one has figured out how to stop McCaffrey yet except the Stanford coaches.

Other than the time change, Fitzgerald is very Holtz like in the aspect he had 10 months to prepare for Stanford. Some coaches have great records in openers and Bowl games because if you give them a month plus to prepare for an opponent they'll beat you. Give them 5 days to prep for an opponent an their a lot more mortal.

What worries me about the Stanford kid is the Irish defense make it a really bad habit of giving up huge plays. Either bad angles, missed assignments, or whiffing on tackles. Sometimes all three on one play. That is right up McCaffrey's wheelhouse.

My main worry by far. It seems our defense is poised to give up 2-3 game changing plays a game. Whether it's against Clemson, USC, or Umass it always happens.

I don't have much confidence in the linebackers to get the job done vs. the Standford run game. I think ND will rely on blitzing and Stanford, being well coached, will rip off some big runs.

Just like OSU last year, they lost very early. If they win out, they will be in the playoff. If they win out excluding ND, they help ND greatly, regardless of the loss to NW.
