I used Rudy as an example, but I was going back even further to a time when pro football was "small time" without the big money and big TV coverage. As a kid
growing up in the 1930's and 40's , and even going into the 50’s, Football fans were " College football Fans " There were some pro teams, but the college teams got " all " the coverage in the media, mostly radio and newspapers, and later TV.
Pro players got very little money. I taught school with two old Steeler players
who played for Art Rooney. if they needed a few extra dollars, they would get a loan from Art Rooney. No big money in those days.
In short, Colleges recruited students first and athletes second. Notre Dame had a large pool of Catholic Schools whose students and parents were
the Sub Alum of Notre Dame. They lived and died ND football. An offer from ND
was a dream come true !

Colleges are all trying to recruit from the same pool of top athletes. Those top athletes " all " have high hopes of playing professional sports. To " most " of those kids, the schools have to sell themselves to the kids. these kids are treated like " super stars " and switch from school to school and " change Hats "
and commitments at the last second.

Face it.... Golson is a Graduate and he is eager to enter the workplace, just like any other ND diploma holder, he has an offer right out of College. Jimbo is no Dumbo, so,,, like he said they "negotiated". Now,,, I am not saying there is any payola involved, but many called EG a "mercenary", right? Nothing about him moving on to his next thing is a snub of his Alma Mater.
He just wants a shot at the big bucks and FSU was his best option to get the good look and play on a team that has about the same odds as the Irish, to be in the final four. Obviously the youngsters do not have the same kind of feeling about their opponents as we observers do. "We" saw the infamous PiC CaLL and other FSU conduct as reason to hate ! But, none of the players ever echoed those sentiments and when Golson decided he could use a "Fresh Start" he looked at the CFB landscape objectively & without prejudice. His lack of emotion caused many of US to boil with it.
