Coach Kelly has the ball rolling at South Bend. More and more talent is coming in and the Irish are playing EXCITING football !!
The days of 3 or 5 years and out for ND head coaches are over. There is stability in south Bend and a National Championship will be coming soon. Because we have a lot of great defensive recruits coming to ND and plenty of veterans like Rochelle, Trumbetti. Morgan, Jaron Jones etcetera ! The offense will still be explosive !

Don't listen to the Moron, Perse !! Coach Sanford is not an upgrade in the slightest over Kelly as Head Coach !

Next year is a super easy schedule and we have the two toughest teams we play at Home!! Stanford and Michigan State and they will both be losing their experienced quarterbacks !!

Next year you will all be singing the praises of Coach Brian Kelly just as you did this year !!

Listen and Follow Malik Zaire and Dishone Kizer and Brandon Wimbush!! Those three guys are winners and are a lot smarter than most of us !! The light is going to click on for one of our great QBs and they will make the team unstoppable !!

So we lost a meaningless bowl game to Ohio State !! Get over it !! It is time to move on !!

Go Irish !!

Thanks Bodi...was turning out all this nonsense about replacing Kelly that has been dominating this board this week. The dead period ends in a few days and hope we are taking recruiting news and speculation rather than this crap.

I totally agree that it is highly unlikely that Kelly will be anywhere else but at ND next season. As a matter of fact i believe it would be a blow to the program should he leave at this point. That said the bowl game wasn't meaningless as a win would have been Kelly's biggest victory at ND and the teams first win in a major bowl in two decades.

Well..............I was having coffee with Brian Kelly this morning and he offhandedly commented that he agreed with Bodi....., that the bowl game was totally meaningless and he planned to just............well............get over it and move on. ;)

Finally a thread that makes sense to me. I was taught as a boy that a man's word is his bond and a handshake meant something. I know this is a new age of disposable contracts with buyout clauses. I will believe Coach Kelly is leaving when he starts talking to other teams. Jack's already said if it happens again then ND would find a new coach. I strongly believe that Coach Kelly is here for the long haul. Why?
1. His wife loves ND. She's doing such good things in the ND community through the Kelly Care Foundation. Things that would be more difficult outside the college community. There's an old saying, "If mama's not happen then nobody's happy.
2. The kids are reported to love the fact their dad is the coach at ND.
3. Mom, Dad, and brothers and their family love ND. I've read that Mom and Dad have attended every home game since 2010.
4. Coach Kelly has his dream job. He's coaching the team that he's followed since childhood.
5. He has brought the team a long way since the 6-6 record in the 2009 season.
6. Talented roster that's getting stronger with each new recruiting class.
7. Most importantly, he has a strong working relationship with the administration and Jack Swarbrick. He seems happy with his job and keeps saying that he wants to be here. There will always be those who chose not to believe him, and that's their right to say so.

I do believe Jack has that short list of Coaches for that rainy day.

Good post, Ara. I would like to add that Coach Kelly did his best coaching to keep the team in the playoff hunt with all the devastating injuries to important players this year. Notre Dame is getting another great recruiting class to help with depth. Clemson with Dabo is getting better and better. At first everyone thought Clemson was a joke as far as they could not win a big game (Clemsoning they called it) But now Clemson is playing for a National Championship with a very solid team. Coach Kelly will get us there. Patience.

Not much to argue about except stating ND lost a meaningless bowl game. That game was not meaningless at all. ND hasn't won a major bowl game in 23 years. It was a chance to finally end that streak and do it against probably one of the Top 3 teams in the country.

Personally I would like to see Kelly start winning double digits consistently before we say everything is running like a well oiled machine. This was though probably the best coaching job of his life with all the injuries and such, especially when you lose your starting QB who you game planned with since the bowl win against LSU. Which BTW, would you consider that bowl win against a top SEC team a meaningless win?

Easily the best post in this thread and I completely agree. The program is certainly is good shape right now but it's hardly great. As you point out the 2 key pieces missing are 1) winning a major bowl game and 2) consistently winning 10+ games a season.

Now that he has he's roster in good shape, I expect that too. It's been along time since ND's roster has been this talented. We still have defensive problems that must addressed this winter. They aren't going to be answered by simply adding more players. It's a problem when the defenders don't understand the plays called, and where they're suppose to be after year two. Football is a read and react game, if you have to think then you appear slower because you hesitate and doubt. You move slower when there's self doubt. You must fly to the ball. Insanity is defined as doing the same thing exactly that failed and expecting a different result.

You said "now that he has the roster in good shape" why did it take 6 years? Weis was a great recruiter and left a boatload of talent, including defensive talent like Teo, Harrison Smith and Ian Williams. Programs that attract less talent like Stanford and MSU were able to build quicker and win bigger in shorter period. Why are ND fans afraid to hold Kelly accountable?

Weis' classes had some star power at the top every year, but as far as overall recruiting Kelly is much more adept. That's why we have the depth we have now, which is better than at any time since the Holtz era. Give Weis credit though, he proved that ND could still attract the top level kid, which was in doubt when he came in in 2005 after the virtual NCAA probation that was Ty Willingham. Kelly 100% benefited from that.

Those taking issue with Bodi's reference to the Fiesta as meaningless, just understand that Bodi has consistently said all these bowl games are meaningless exhibition games, other than the playoff games. There is nothing Bowl specific about his comment, other than his opinion that the current playoff structure has rendered the so called Major Bowls meaningless other than the two hosting the playoff semi. He expressed this opinion BEFORE ND lost.

Every ND fan wants this to be true. We can get there, but imo it will take an epiphany, philosophical changes and coaching changes. The Offense has to develop an effective/dominant jumbo package. ('bama has placed 2 d linemen in the backfield with Henry.) The offense also has to be more smash mouth/physical oriented among other things. (Adams is a stud) Our TEs need to emerge. The D needs to be simplified with a similar dominant physical mind set. Improvement in Red Zone efficiency will help across the board.

We have excellent kickers and Sanders has enough speed and shiftiness that if we can create space....
There's a ton of work to be done. The opening game versus Texas was our best all round effort last year. We need to play like that week to week. We beat them to a pulp.... imo The last time we looked that solid was oklahoma '12....

Some stats over the last 5 years.... outside of the 2012 scoring D and total D there's not much to write home about in these areas.... We'll need a leap in '16 to compete for the title....

You must do more that recruit talent. You must develop the younger talent to take the place of the older players. There's a reason he went 3-9, 7-6, and 6-6 the last three years at ND. I've never failed to give Coach Weis credit for his tireless recruiting efforts. He proved Davie and Willingham wrong about recruiting at ND. Player development is the key to any successful program.

The cabinet certainly wasn't full at QB. Weis left Coach Kelly with Dayne Crist coming of a knee injury, early enrolled Tommy Reis, freshman Andrew Hendrick and walk on Nate Montana. Luke Massa was brought in later by Kelly. It's to bad Jimmy Clausen followed Weis' advise and went early to the NFL. His game experience, mobility, and accuracy would have worked well in Coach Kelly's offense. It would have given Dayne a year to learn the offense better, maybe gain some game experience, and his knee to get stronger. Golden Tate possibly a canidate for the Heisman. We will never know doe sure.
I usually don't disagree with you Ara but on this I do.
Kelly's offense is most dangerous with a true mobile QB. Golson I would NOT consider to be mobile. So IMO he hasn't had a true mobile QB until Malik. That ended quickly but Kizer came in and certainly was mobile enough. Clausen is not mobile. We know Rees....Again part of his woes were the fact he couldn't move more than a three step drop back. Golson could have been more active with his legs but chose not to. Also every time he did run it was an adventure on us keeping possession.

Not until this did he really have his proto type QB. Both Kizer and Zaire. Wimbush too....but one of them are transferring mark my words.

Golson had the physical part of being mobile, he just didn't have the mindset. He ran reluctantly, especially after developing fumble-itis. Kizer and Wimbush run aggressively, you can tell they are looking for the opportunity.

Golson seemed shell shocked.... PTkD

FIESTA: I believe OSU is one of the three best teams in the country. And I think they beat both teams playing for the natty. By the way, without all the injuries, I believe ND has the talent to play with all four (I'd put Stanford in there) of those teams. Have to say the variable for me is BVG's defense which just doesn't seem to get a bang for it's buck. I also don't see him camping out in his car to recruit five star hs players.

We will win ten games next year. Even with losing like 8-9 players to the NFL draft. But, like the rest of you, I am frustrated by not winning the big, big one (I believe beating USC and Michigan again which Kelly has done, and beating OKLAHOMA at their place with a Freshman QB, and beating an SEC power, LSU with a freshman QB all represent big wins) but I want the big one.

Kelly will get us there!

As dire as Jaylon Smith's knee injury seemed when he was carted off the field at the Fiesta Bowl, there was optimism that the Notre Dame linebacker will make a full recovery after a Thursday surgery to assess and repair the damage.

Smith tore the ACL and LCL in his left knee against Ohio State on Jan. 1, but the procedure to repair the ligaments "went about as well as it possibly could have," a source with knowledge of the situation told SI.

"What we do know is there's going to be a full recovery," the source said. "The repair is solid, and he's very optimistic. We're optimistic. And Jaylon is ready to get going with his rehab."

The repair of the ACL and LCL "couldn't have gone better," per the source. Though clearly significant, the ligament damage was the lesser of the concerns for the All-America performer thought to be a lock for a first-round NFL draft selection.

There were reports of possible nerve damage within the knee, which would have loomed much larger for Smith's immediate future. But the source offered a positive report about that after the surgery.

"The nerve was healthy and in great condition," the source said.

The 6'2", 240-pound Smith finished his junior season at Notre Dame with a team-best 114 tackles and ranked third on the Fighting Irish with nine tackles for loss. His decision regarding an early departure to the NFL draft is expected in the coming days, before the Jan. 18 deadline to declare.

Totally agree cgvr. We need to commit to physicality on both sides of the ball. The elite teams have it, and we need to work on it.

Well, kelly's latest is "culture beats scheme". We've lost our "cultural" way and continue to meander. Here's how we used to run stuff.... I've posted this 2 + minute video before. Watch FR Luther Bradley knock AA Senior Lynn Swann out of his helmet then shove him when he goes to retrieve it as they cross paths.... Southern Cal is the defending National Champs and here's the respect our FR gave them. Priceless....

PS Upperclassmen Fanning (88) gave him a little extra post play too... We have to return to that bad ass take no prisoners mentality. 'bama was loaded with it in the pregame tunnel vs us... We had no response....

Good for him....

the selfish part of me wishes he would come back.

The realist part of me says go go go. Ever since the NFL put a rookie cap in place so to speak there really isn't as big of a difference between top pick and middle and so on.

The days of the insane Sam Bradford guaranteed money before taking snap 1 in the NFL are over.

If that were still in play then possibly Jaylon may come back to rise back up the board as it could mean 10, 20, 30, or even more million in contract.

No longer so I would suspect he would be moving on.

Along with Jaylon moving on can we get BVG to move the **** on as well.

Look at his footnote. 12-0 in 2016. When there's another 3-4 losses next year he would say so what we lost 3-4 meaningless games.

Why do you have to use "you idiots"? Why can't you just say what you have to say without calling people names? It's ugly and not necessary.

You guys are getting to serious. Lighten up..
Randall fought out of Frazier's in Philly. My buddy's first day there Joe puts him in with Tex. My friend was 160-170. He steps in and immediately starts trying to belt him in the balls. Cobb, "easy cowboy, I ain't gonna hurt you." They have been great friends since that day.
Randall and my buddy hung out with a Jersey heavyweight lifting champ and another guy that was an umpteenth degree blackbelt 6'5" 260 who would go to the Himalayas by himself. We hung out at a handful of world kickboxing championships. Randall never won it, but fought for titles.
One day after a night of too much Tequilla he was in the ring at Frazier's with Marvis Frazier. Randall owned the ring at the time. Anyway, Marvis got the better of Randall during the sparring session. .....much to Joe's delight. Joe thought Marvis had turned a corner. The next day after a.good night's sleep Randall shows up and.Marvis is.in the ring talking sh**. Joe asks if he wants to go again. Randall gets in the ring and starts immediately beating Marvis to a pulp. Joe screaming frantically at the carnage, "easy Randall he's.just a kid...he's.just a kid." Randall, "shit Joe, yesterday you brought him in here and he was a man."
At one of Randall's world championship fights I hung out with Georgie Benton. I asked him about my buddy turning pro. He said, "he's my bad boy. He doesn't want to go pro. He's a roofer." At the time he was beating the crap out of guys like Mike the body snatcher McCallum......
That crew of 4 guys coming down a boardwalk was like something out of the old west.....

Here's a good article linked below. The bow and arrow story is different from what I was told. Apparently another student was shooting bottle rockets at folks in the quad at Abilene Christian. Randall shot a ,couple of flaming arrows at him. When he was sent to the Dean the Dean said, "Randall you could have killed him." "Dean, I had visions of putting one right through his heart." I.doubt he was attired the way the article says. This crew was off the charts hysterical. Randall knocking out Earnie Shavers was pretty cool....

You didn't hurt my feelings; you make yourself small when you talk like that to another.

I like you IG but you should know me by now. Why all of a sudden are you getting annoyed at me? I have been calling people Idiots ever since I have been on this board. You should know its all in fun. I have been called an idiot plenty of times here.. It is just a football message board.
Anyway, You are one of the better posters on this board and I will not badger you anymore.

I appreciate your posts on here as well. And, I should probably be the last person on here calling people out considering my posts three or four years ago. I had such a foul mouth that I got put in the penalty box for a few weeks

I'm glad that I woke up and started trying to be more respectful of others' opinions (and made use of the ignore feature). You're a class guy and above it IMO

Actually the use of the word idiots would be mild in describing some on this forum . We come on this board and watch our team nearly go undefeated with a depleted roster and some numb nuts are calling out coach Kelly for " not winning the big one " whatever the hell that means . Or suggesting that our 32 yr old QB coach should take over for Kelly . So idiots would be an appropriate use of the word and in some cases the use of that word would be being kind .

Whomever would want Brian Kelly gone would be classified as an idiot. ND is as physical as any team in the country. Sometimes you suffer injuries, don't play well or the other team plays better, it does not mean you're not physical.

As a general rule fans are morons. But lately NFL Front Offices and University's have acted like morons firing really good coaches

Thankfully the ND Administration leaves yhe moronic conversations about Brian Kelly to its fan base. And our handful of resident "mixed nuts" do a great job of reinforcing the "fans are idiots" theory.

I started this to just merely discuss a possible replacement. In light of every God NFL job available Kelly always seems tied to it some how some way.
I'm not excusing the behavior is some but I do have to tell ya....
The fan base is over due for a dominant team again. A championship has eluded this team now longer than ever and counting.

People want a title yesterday.

In 6 years time Kelly hasn't won the biggest of games.

The disturbing thing to me is not just throwing out there blindly he can't win the big one but rather the big ones every one sieaks of ..we are actually competitive and possibly could win. Its extra hard on winning those when you spot the other team 14 points in every big game.

Why are the other teams amped up starting the games with energy and emotion yet every single one we start flat and lifeless.

Are we scared? Timid? Over whelmed because we have no confidence to be in that environment?
There are some amazing things Kelly has done to bring us back to relevance..but big game energy is NOT one of them.

P.s.
Notre Dame will never get an upset victory playing flat. When it comes to possibly having an edge from excitement...chip on the shoulder we always allow the other team to have that..not us.

This is a problem

"Flat' "Chip on your shoulder" "Excitement " these are all cute buzz words created by fans and the media.

And why is it only the games that ,ND loses are classified as big? ND went 12-0 in 2012. But the ONLY big game was Alabama? Wins over Michigan, Miami, Stanford and USC were nothing right?

But Stanford was a big game this year right? How could a regular season game versus Stanford in 2015 be big? But not in 2012?

Simple, because as general rule fans are dopes.

Rivalry games are bigger when both teams rankings are high. Let me give you an example.

Beating # 1 southern cal is greatly more significant than beating not ranked southern cal.

If it's your suggestion that the 2005 southern cal game is equal to the ones under kelly's tenure you may want to study up on the use of the word "dope". That game had National Championship implications for both sides.

southern cal has not been to a major bowl since the end of the 2008 season....

kelly's caught them at a vulnerable time for them and has gone a solid 4-2. (The 2014 game was a disaster, but gave us the emergence of Zaire).

I haven't seen one person on this board say that the '12 Stanford game wasn't a big win.

You sunshine pumpers love setting up straw men.

As many of you pipe off about kelly's player development skills the reality check is that to date he has a lower yearly average of NFL picks than 3 of the last 4 regimes and barely out paced weis....
