Buchner done for the year

Well, that's what I figured. And we're in trouble.

And I feel really bad, I like Tyler Buchner a lot, and had every belief that he could become a totally good, standout QB, and you couldn't have asked for a more perfect ND QB, in the tradition of guys like Ian Book and Brady Quinn....

And Drew Pyne, fate has come calling! You are ND's new starting QB!!!!

By the way, where are you hearing this, any links or confirmation?

Okay, no need for any link, I was able to google it....

ND just cannot find itself a legitimate QB, who can play at an AA level and stay healthy.

I'd contact all top 10 2023 QB recruits and tell them. If you can enroll in January, you have a great chance of starting right away.

Carr, even if he reclassified I doubt would be able to enroll in January. I'd keep him in the 24 class.

Somewhere right now is a really good backup QB at another school and he's already making plans. Nobody specifically. But there's someone. I knew from day one Buchner would not make it through the year. He's made of papier mache.

The problem is that the QB you're talking about will need to graduate in December or May, as ND very seldom takes transfers of students still working towards their degree.

I think replacing Tommy Rees post haste is the far better bet than frantically looking for a savior QB. Definitely go ahead and start casting about for an additional QB through the portal, that's what it's there for, but the elephant in the room of this offense is Tommy Rees. In my strongest layman's opinion.

And leave CJ Carr alone, unless it's his idea and he absolutely wants to totally of his own volition to shorten his childhood and skip his sr year in HS, to be handed the reins without even earning it as a 17-year-old kid to take over at QB what will possibly a raging dumpster fire of a program a year from now.

If we need new blood at QB, the way, way, way, way better bet is to aggressively hit the transfer portal, and get the admissions dept to make it happen for us. I'm sure there are plenty of QBs out there who are perfectly academically capable of handling ND, and now's the time for ND to start figuring out how they're going to be more accommodating to undergrad transfers.....

This not good. I realize people are tired of bringing up Kelly. I am too. So this will be the last time I do this. ND is in a bad spot because of poor recruiting at the QB position. Never ever have I seen such a lousy job of getting top notch QBs to commit to ND . It's mind boggling that the Irish cannot get great QBs. ND should never be in this position. A legit difference maker at QB can hide a lot of deficiencies in other areas. This not a knock on Pyne, if in fact he is the starter now. He's a gamer and gives his all. But he is has a limited skill set. ND should have better quality at QB after 12 years of recruiting under Brian Kelly.

The job is open for 2023. Whoever wants it. I get the hesitation from recruits based on what they're seeing, but they have one hell of an opportunity to come in and take this program over and there is little to no competition if they're great. There is close to a 0% chance Tyler Buchner would beat out any of the top 10 2023 QB's.

I often wonder how Jurkovic would be if he were the guy right now.

The QB depth is what separates the elite teams from the good / very good teams. Go check out the Alabama, OSU and USC QB depth charts and who they have coming in future classes. The QBs are willing to stick around and wait for their chance playing for Lincoln Riley, Saban and Day

I have no idea if you watch his limited action last year how you arrived at that conclusion.

Watch Clemson’s freshman. He has a tight spiral and can throw on the run.

TB would hit some impressive throws and then half the time he couldn’t hit water if he fell off a jet ski. A broken clock is right twice a day.

Im not revelling in his injury but this is actually going to help this program Going forward. They get to move on executing a traditional offense and all of the Tommy haters are going to be able critique him in his ability to get Pyne and develop Angeli for the future.

perhaps TB can be cross trained at another position. Kid is an athlete and is tough as nails it just sucks he’s not a good QB.

This was bound to happen with his playing style. Pyne has shown flashes but honestly I think he should have a short leash. I’d like to see what Angeli can do. Not like we’re going anywhere this season anyways.

Please just STFU. Your tail is now firmly nestled between your legs, and we get that. But can you just for once duct-tape your mouth shut with the bizarro-world, ludicrous BK bashing. BK left because he didn't want to deal with fans like you anymore. You ran him out of town, because you're so toxic and perverse, that he finally said life is too short for this. And all BK did was return to the program to genuinely elite, top five program in the nation status. And now that the program is almost instantaneously imploding into dumpster fire status upon his departure, NOW YOU ARE BLAMING THAT ON HIM....

So just effin' stop. You don't have the right to do this, free country or not. You have a duty to your fellow man to not live in such a completely toxic fantasy world. These are not 'opinions', this is just BK haters wildly, vainly taking your last desperate flailing swings at ND's all-tine winningest coach before the program goes up in smoke. Like the ending scene in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre or something....

So hopefully this really is the last time you ever mention his name....

You have to really feel bad for Buchner. Kid lost his jr. year in high school to a knee injury, and then lost his sr yr to Covid school shut down. Now this, after finally getting his chance at ND. Being a dual threat QB has it’s risks, and the best ones know how to avoid getting the big hits. Buchner runs like a running back, and it’s not in his dna to slide or get out of bounds when critical yards are needed. Not sure he deserves the injury prone label, but his style clearly puts him at high risk of injury.

The dilemma for Rees is how to maximize Buchner’s strength while minimizing injury, and these goals are polar opposites given his style. Protecting him by making him a pocket passer is a mistake because that’s his greatest weakness. Personally would have preferred giving him a rolling pocket as Buchner seems to pass better on the move, and running out of bounds after a gain is always an option. All that is moot for the remainder of this season with this injury.

I hope we see Buchner competing for the starting position next year, but not if Rees sticks with the same pocket emphasis. Otherwise, we need to see Angeli or Carr or a transfer.

That’s unfortunate, I feel bad for everyone, but this is the risk you take with a running QB.

Tom Brady didn’t last 23 years in the NFL because he was a running QB.
When your depth at QB is shallow, running your best QB is risky.

But, it is what it is, and it’s time for everyone to step up and put forth their best effort.

I wonder how this will impact the point spread

Go Irish

I hope Buchner enjoys a quick recovery.

He was asked to do too much for a first year starter. It seemed he was getting booed while the rest of the offense wasn't doing all that great.

Lol good one. By the way never ever once did I spew venom at someone on this board like you just did to me. I disagree with many but I respect their opinion or point of view. for the record I never bashed Brian Kelly either. I always said he was a good coach and a so so recruiter. that is my take on him. I am simply pointing out that the QB position is in a precarious spot due to poor recruiting, You disagree ? Fine, I haven no issue with that. I also have no issue with you telling me to STFU. If that makes you feel better have at it. Have a nice rest of your day. Go Irish!!!

Uncalled for. U went over the top. I admit I don’t like Kelly. But poster has valid point. Chill. A lot of your comments are very good. This one u had a bad moment

He does not have a valid point at all. He just wants to keep bashing BK, as do you. And you have no leg to stand on, you never have, and you certainly don't have one now.

You guys are drug-addicted to bashing BK with absolutely no basis or merit whatsoever. Opinions stop being opinions when they become lunacy. And the idea that BK is to blame in any way, for this team's failures thus far, is lunacy.

No matter what, the issue is playbook when it comes to anyone else (existing or transfer). Angeli doesn't know it yet and has been running the Scout team. I don't disagree with anyone who questions the lack of QB depth recruited to ND but we have in the past lived through 2nd and even 3rd stringers playing. No reason to talk about what if's. Let's go, Drew. Your biggest dream/fantasy is here - to firmly be the starting QB.

There's no lack of QB depth. We have four scholarship QBs. And three of them first-choice guys in Buchner, Pyne, and Angeli. All highly recruited. If this coaching staff is so incompetent and incapable that they can't win with any of them, that's on them.....

I never saw anything from TB that made me think he would be better than Book.

Tough break for him (no pun intended) since he probably has lost his chance to prove himself.

Freeman: "We had a good game plan..."

Whatever the offensive & defensive game plan was, Freeman approved it...the buck stops with him.

I cannot think of a bigger drop off between QB recruiting and qb play. Over 12 years we probably had an average of 4.5 stars of recruited talent that didn't play qb or wished they never had {Crist, Hendrix, Golson, Kiel, some other guys, Zaire, Wimbush, Jurkovec, Hart}
The QB depth is what separates the elite teams from the good / very good teams. Go check out the Alabama, OSU and USC QB depth charts and who they have coming in future classes. The QBs are willing to stick around and wait for their chance playing for Lincoln Riley, Saban and Day
They will dress for 1.5 years and hit the portal.

Brutal - watching TB was the primary point of interest for me this year. I'll be playing golf on Saturday's.

well regardless of all things and considerations:
BEST WISHES FOR A FULL SPEEDY RECOVERY FOR TYLER! And-that he returns to go on to win a Heisman

I think that gets a 100% support!

Too bad for Buchner. Well, we get to see what Pyne can do as a starter, and if he falters, Angeli.

Thats too bad for the kid. Hope he heals quick and gets back on the field fully healthy when he's ready.

On another note, least ND now has an excuse for their many losses to come.

Well, we have 2 highly recruited backup QB's.
Pyne 4*...33 offers, including Alabama, USC, Mich, OKL, FLA.
Angeli 4*...23 offers, including Ohio St, Mich, LSU, Stanford

Either one, with a smaller playbook, should be good enough to win
6-8 games this year.
