I liked BVG's style of defense but obviously it is too complex for college players so he will be gone. Still I don't care if you bring in a coach like Barry Alvarez because these kids don't have the skill level of top teams right now. Kelly needs a new coach in soon though, to at least adjust things until he gets a permanent DC.

Hey I said 2 weeks prior to the season started we were screwed, because of the loss of Max and Butler but then we also lost Crawford. I also said we needed to score 30 pts a game to win 10 this year but those losses in a already weak secondary were too much and we will be lucky to win 9 now even if score 35 a game.

Obviously some on here think we have the greatest players ever, which is comical, but when you look at Bama compared to our Irish it is like looking at a JV vs a varsity. Not many of our players on either side of the ball would be starting for Bama, Ohio St., etc.. just a hand full and you're not beating solid programs like that.

Oh well, I didn't have high expectations but I am realistic. I still like Kelly and think he can change things but who knows, maybe we our just screwed. It has been 29 years now without a NC so that says something whether you want to believe it or not.

This defense doesn't lack talent... that's absurd. They lack any form of development, toughness and attention to detail. Many of them are fine athletes... Their leadership is clueless and inept.

Bob Diaco, Barray Alvarez, etc, etc could easily field a competitive defense with what Notre Dame has on its roster.

BVG simply has had a shit plan with his grpup of personnel.

One thing you said is true. BVG sucks.

The rest... please tell me how in the **** you can determine if we've the talent or not.

If I take a 5 star player...and I tell him this is how you tackle...and it's the worst possible for of tackling...pretty soon Mr 5 star looks very pedestrian.

ND's defense features more talent than the majority of teams in the country. Rankings, offer lists and thes eye test confirms that...

They bust coverages all over the place because they don't understand the scheme or how to lineup, trade off , or adjust to looks they haven't practiced six million times. They tackle poorly because they have dreadful fundamentals and they spend the entire game probing, rather than flowing downhill and fitting. They don't understand leverage, or if they do, they've been taught that it's their responsibility to relinquish it at every opportunity. They play off ****ing coverage when they bring no pressure, and they drop d-lineman into zone coverages with telegraphed blitzes from obvious places. Their overload blitzes are comical because they rarely attack the same pressure point and when they do, they don't blitz with any kind of intelligence or idea of where the quarterback is going, rather than where he was pre snap. If I see another field corner bail in coverage or give up leverage when the quarterback is rolling to the field to escape an overload from the weakside, I'm going to puke. Lyght needs to sit in the corner for a timeout, then beg someone to teach him how to coach his corners to balance themselves and when to flip their hips in press coverage, because ND's corners are terribly coached... finally, you cannot run soft, off coverage all game, and match it with delayed zone-blitz schemes. That's football 101. You either drop 7-8 and play blanket coverages with 3-4 pass rushers, or you send 6-7, get up In their face and get ready to turn and run... You can't play soft and cover 1, cut / hold, or cover 3, and send 5 on 5. They'll all get picked up, the receivers will break off their routes and it's pitch-and-catch all day.

For a guy who coached in the NFL BVG's scheme is trash. Any decent high school OC would light him up.

here's the thing with BVG...

Trying to implement a system that takes a ridiculous amount of time to student athletes is impossible to work.

Pros study film 5 hours, practice 2.....

Our players are students for 6 hours, and have about 2.5 hours total time to devote to football.

That alone is why ever since he's been here our players always look confused. A confused player is a tentative player no matter the star rating. If he isn't sure what the **** he's doing he will hesitate.

This is just touching on his idiotic thinking of having a pro scheme.

Fundamentally we're terrible top to bottom. Just horrible. Tackling, coverage, pursuit angles,
LAZY play,
Lastly playing scared. Scared of contact by some, scared to make a mistake as well.

When Texas brought in the heavy qb...everyone in the world knew where he was going. Yet in first and goal from the five our linebackers are a yard deep in the endzone.

6 ****ing yards deep they were starting.
Sooo .....either BVG told them to be there....or they went whoops coach I just couldn't get there in time (scared)...

Regardless it's wrong. Everything about his defense is WRONG. Everything.

He's the worst hire in our history.

As I said, and nobody read, I said in comparison to top programs. If you are going to say we should be playing for a NC every year, although you still must think this is ND from the 60's, then you better have at least a top 20 defense! I think today was a combination though of poor defense and poor offense, there was no way we were winning this season without controlling the ball. In addition you can't turn the ball over, look at Ole Miss.

Regardless, and I say this every year, our secondary is average for even programs in that second tier of FBS teams. When was that last time we had a shut down secondary? I was watching an NFL game last weekend and Rich Gannon was commentating... He said to have a strong defense you need shut down corners and a pass rush and seriously we haven't had those in decades! 2012 was close because we had a strong front 7 but we still didn't have that great secondary, we had enough to make a difference though.

Whatever you can argue with me but 29 years says something. Maybe it is the fact I don't expect us to be a NC team each year while many of you expect that regardless of what the situation may be? We lost a lot of talent this past year from our defense, that was before losing kids to suspension and injury, yet some on here think we have the depth to replace them immediately, that is so ridiculous! Also last years defense wasn't good so how could you expect better? Did we dominate recruiting? I must have missed all those 5 star studs that could be able to come in right away and make a difference.

Without the novel...I kindly disagree....#1...at this point any defensive coach...ANY not named BVG would give us a better chase. Teams have shown the world now how easily you beat ND defense. Run hard nose football because we don't tackle well...throw some deep balls as the receivers very easily and frequently get behind our secondary.

It really has become that simple.

A better chance at what? That is the problem with many on this site, expectations are for a NC regardless of reality! If you're talking about winning an extra game I agree so let's see someone else get in on defense. It still doesn't change the talent level, particularly in that secondary, but maybe you see something else the coaches don't o_O

Well I've not said one time in any of this about winning a national title. Not once. But thank you for the assumptions....

My reference using the word chance ...

Meant a chance to ****ing get a crucial stop at least once in a while. A chance to be defensively competitive. Whether we run the table or not...our defense is embarrassing and a ****ing traffic cone at this point could be coaching our defense given our performance.

I echo again and highly disagree with your ridiculous sentiment that no matter what coach we brought in it won't make a difference.

Give me a pop Warner coach who is a stickler for details about tackling...and I'll show you an improved tackling Notre Dame defense.

That really IS how bad we are.

Our defense at times looks interested in flag football not tackle football.

It's embarrassing.

You know what...I just went back and reread your post.

You can go **** yourself.

How on earth can you tell whether our guys would be starting for the elites or not....when you see a Bama player come up...break down, bend his knees, shoulder in, wrap, lift, drive to the ground.

Because they may have good materiel but little routine things like TACKLING are being reaffirmed by Bama and OSU.
Any good defense really.

How many high star athletes did temple have last year?

We had the all works Jaylon and while a ten tines better athlete than the backer from temple...he absolutely took our entire defense including Jaylon how to tackle properly.

Temple team wide didn't match our athletes...but they sure looked like a much better defensive team.
They were a better defensive team because of one thing...

They TACKLED❕

They tackled properly and we have players playing lazy leaning a shoulder into a body then looking bewildered they didn't go down.

Remember when we had to sub in for a db in that game . They immediately threw a spot pass and he looked like he hasn't tackled since junior high.

comparing Temple to ND shows your ignorance based on schedule alone. It also goes back to my point about expectations and your lame response. Look at your buddies like Pers and others, all think we are supposed to play for a national championship regardless of talent level, development, experience, injuries, etc... You have no clue about football so go learn!

By the way any team in the country can put together decent defenses here and there, the coach at VT was notorious for his stellar defenses but what happened there the past few seasons? I also saw someone mention BC, but they just played VT and gave up 49 so what happened to that coach? Does he suck now? The answer is no but college football is difficult to have great defenses year in and out, but you don't ****ing understand anything so I am not sure why I try and explain. As I said, go learn and come back because you will never be satisfied with any coach at ND... Reminds me of the tools that wanted Holtz out because he wasn't winning more titles. Pathetic!

There is no disputing our defense is bad it's costing us games and it's getting worse not better over time. Go check the point totals in the last 5 games ... I don't care who we are playing giving up 40+ is beyond horrible. In the meantime we have several former ND defenders playing on Sunday.

Stanford and MSU recruit less talented players and have far better defenses. I love the straw man argument about a NC. Who on this board has called for a NC this year. The vast majority just want to beat a top 10 team every now and again. They would like to win 9+ regular season games consistently. They would like to not get embarrassed in every meaningful bowl game.

The NC drivel is the classic strawman argument.
