"academic standards" is just self righteous rhetoric that excuses away incompetence/bad leadership at the university. Where were the academic standards during Charlie Weis' top 5 classes/5 star-laden classes?

Bro, you are making my point.

We were able to secure many 5-star #1 prospects at their position/top 5 prospects during the Charlie Weis era while having arguably even more archaic academic requirements and standards.

If we could do it then, why can't we do it now?

Point being: the issue today is not academic standards, its something else.
