2022 football schedule finally released

“Wisconsin and Purdue were both quality wins.

Not a lot of folks would agree with you.”

We get it, the wins against 8-4 Wisconsin & Purdue mean zilch but the wins against 8-4 Arkansas & Texas a&m are meaningful. Just another example of preferential treatment given to mediocre sec teams as if they’re some gauntlet. Wisconsin & Purdue are just as good as those two mentioned, but the cfp needs to prop up Georgia’s (or any other sec team w/ 1 loss for that matter) schedule.

Having our bye in week 5 might haunt us by the end of the season. Most teams are trying to slot the bye in week 7, 8, or 9. Hopefully we keep developing quality backups so we aren't gassed by the time we get to USC.

That's the first thing I noticed, 8 straight to close the season. The schedule was tricky, if they put Boston College @ home Oct 1st, and have the bye where the Syracuse game is (Oct 29th) they would have wound up with three straight road games to close the season (at Navy, at Syracuse, at USC). The Shamrock Series game actually hurts them IMO next year from a scheduling perspective.

Even worse was at times this year, Florida, Texas and Auburn were considered quality wins until Florida and Texas fell apart and Auburn ended up 6-6. I would say wins over two 8-4 teams are quality wins.

Right, and they're not because you say they aren't, got it

See how that works?

Not just me. The pollsters didn't think so either. That's why neither Wisconsin nor Purdue was ranked in the final AP or Coaches' polls. It's really not that hard to figure out.

Apparently for you it is but I'm done trying to explain it.

The only explanation you have provided is that you think they are quality teams. It's great that you think that, but you are in the minority, as evidenced by the fact that both teams were unranked at the end of the season. Sorry, but your opinion carries no weight with me.

Really dislike playing three teams from California.…and UNLV….and BYU in the same season. That’s a hell of a lot West exposure and two long traveling away games.
AGREE !

Too much time zone travel.

Did you not see what happened this year? We were left out of the playoffs in large part due to our schedule. Because we do not play in a conference championship game, we need to play a tough schedule.
We were left off because Cincinnati beat us and Cincinnati went undefeated, not because of our schedule.

we were ranked behind Cincinnat, Alabama, Georgia and Michigan

the committee got it right

I had the exact same thoughts. I personally would have preferred to bite the bullet on having 3 straight road games at the end of the year. It was probably never going to happen, though. Among other reasons, I'm sure Clemson really pushed the ACC not to allow us a bye week before playing them.

My entire point is that, because we are not playing a conference championship game, we need to play a tougher schedule. We have seen that going 11-1 against a mediocre schedule doesn't cut it.
Comparing our schedule to Alabama's is a futile endeavor. Notre Dame needs to be concerned with its own schedule, not with Alabama's schedule.
"we need to play a tougher schedule."

Many will agree with you to a large degree -- Where ND gets "hamstrung" in scheduling "tough" opponents is;

The ACC commitment (on average, 5 games a year)
The "BIG 3" that ND won't give up on (Navy, Stanford, USC)

That leaves 4 open spots a year (on average -- could be less if we play 6 ACC schools) -- with the TOUGH opponents probably in their own conferences (B10 typically does not play OOC opponents after September as an example) -- finding spots for them, and them having availability has to be really difficult. I would tell you to spend a day in Jack's shoes relative to scheduling and see how he has to balance it all out.

The schedule also needs to be balanced out so that travel is minimized (to the degree it can be), there is not a stretch of 4-5 TOUGH opponents (that wears on the guys having to play at a high level against a team who probably had a breather before ND) that just guts ND -- and, last, but not least, the academic responsibilities as well. Overall, when you compare schedules to the other national TOUGH guys, it is comparable. Where ND gets blasted is the CCG data point -- we do not play that 13th game --

What is your suggestion?

Notre Dame probably did not want to have the final home game for seniors against Clemson and Clemson probably did make that push.

My first suggestion is that we scrap the Shamrock Series games. Having one-offs in pro stadiums necessarily makes one less home and home feasible.

This year’s shamrock series was part of a home and home.

My biggest gripe is playing Marshall and UNLV in the same season. I recognize that we play OSU, Clemson and USC, but playing two schools of the caliber of Marshall and UNLV is a mistake, IMO.
I would agree...if the OSU, Clem, USC mistake (at the time) had not been made. However, its interesting how all three of the tough-on-paper schools just finished their worst seasons in a long time. Feeling mildly confident.

Swapping out Cincy, Wisconsin and Virginia for Ohio State, BYU and Clemson looks like a tougher row to hoe. And USC, with Riley, should be better. Much tougher group than what OU will face. Good luck to the new coach. He may need some.

We play 4 non Power 5 teams, one of which is BYU who is independent and about as good as your average Power 5 team. Navy has been decent over the last 15 years. I don’t see much of an issue with the schedule. OSU and Clemson offsets any issues, IMO.

That is a CFP schedule. You could be playing 2, top 4 teams. Nobody plays that level unless you in the CFO. That is one tough schedule. If you add UGA or Bama it is a CFP.

This is my dream schedule of opponents.
1. Saginaw Valley State.
2. Alabama.
3. West Alabama.
4. Ohio State.
5. Ohio.
6. Michigan.
7. Eastern Michigan.
8. Texas A & M
9. Texas :D (See what I did there)
10. Georgia
11. Georgia State.
12. Oklahoma.

*** 13th game everyone is clamoring for----New York Jets.

There was a time in the not so recent past Stanford, FSU, and USC were playing big-time football. I am sure no one envisioned all of those programs being in the toilet for 2021.

Maybe no one envisioned it. But it happened. And it could happen again.

The easy schedule almost got us into the playoffs. Maybe if we make it even easier we would have got in. The Clemson model.
Making a schedule tougher makes it harder to get in.

*** Don't get me wrong, I would like tougher schedules but it doesn't make it easier to get in the playoffs.
