My Two Cents- Clemson 2020

This game, like so many other ND games, closely resembled my love life; so many good ones that just slipped away. Except… this one didn’t. Your Fighting Irish just won their biggest game in 27 years with this battle that turned out to be everything we expected and quite a bit more. Did anybody see that coming? Yeah, quite a few people did, in fact. This team is really good and just getting better. I don’t care who was out for Clemson, ND had a few players out too and they had a hard pause to practice/training during the year that Clemson didn’t have. Clemson has more depth on their team with higher rated players and draft classes over the past several years. The best ND starters were better than the best Clemson starters. Period. I learned that @thomasna is really the nom de plume for Brian Kelly after reviewing his game plan (https://notredame.forums.rivals.com/threads/how-to-attack-venables-defense.159461/). Look at that at tell me that wasn’t exactly what happened in this game. Thanks for the insight coach! There were so many great moments and great posts I’ll do my best to capture what I saw/read, but while this may be a highlight of ND football, it is by no means the pinnacle. That is yet to come.

Uiagalelei/Lawrence- Stop. Don’t even get started with the “If Lawrence was playing things would have been different” BS. He was the Lawrence of his class. He had more experience that Lawrence did when he stepped in as Clemson QB and led them to a NC. He shredded the ND secondary for 439 yards and 2 TDs. Those 439 yards were the most against any ND defense… ever… topping Carson Palmer’s 425 in 2002. I call that a Two-fer… we win a game and a USC record gets broken. No this game wouldn’t have been altered one bit by the QB. This was decided by the @alperry grunts on both lines, and the absolute domination of the Clemson ground game by ND. Although not a true running play, the Jack Lamb takedown of Etienne after the 2nd ND FG epitomized how dominant ND was against Clemson’s ball carriers.

It Was Over When- Skowronek dropped the ball on 4th and 7 with 2:10 left in the game. I knew it was over then. I’ve seen this movie before. Another close game had slipped away. Except… it didn’t. A great defense and a timely timeout gave ND the Irish a chance to put it back it the hands of a money QB, a dominant O-line, and an overlooked former QB turned receiver who has been making noise lately to send this game into OT. I’ll do my best to tie these thoughts together in the next few paragraphs.

Brian Kelly- We’ve seen a lot of BK incarnations over the years, but THIS was the one we thought we were getting in 2009 and, I say this very honestly, he still hasn’t peaked. His timeout at 2:06 in the 4th was brilliant and gave the D a chance to get the ball back, and they delivered. The man has evolved and become a better coach. Very few people in any profession have that ability. This was BK from a talk show a couple of months ago (Using quotes but basically paraphrasing some parts): “Consistently, double digit wins puts you, then, in a position where you can recruit at the highest level… You have to break through and win one of those games… I had a similar situation in the other programs I’ve been at… but we finally broke through. And we’ll break through at ND.” You broke through, Coach. You got the signature win. The best is yet to come. (Rivals competitor. PM me for source).

Defense- Ladies and Gentlemen, ND has a defense. Finally. I know I’ve said it before but this is your proof in a big game. Sure they gave up a lot of passing yds, but they came up with big plays and contained the run all game. Big plays and big players. Geek Stat: Etienne’s 28 yds rushing were his lowest since Alabama held him to 22 yds in the 2017 NC as a true freshman and his 1.6 ypc were his lowest. Ever. By .8 ypc (previous low was 2.4 in a win against VT as a freshman). They call that dominant where I come from. Their work in the 2nd OT was as good a D as you’re ever gonna see.

Davis- Mentioned this last week but check out @patrickengel’s story on him https://notredame.rivals.com/news/a...t-home-and-notre-dame-is-better-because-of-it It’s a damn-near positive foreshadowing of how important this guy is/was. His 4thQ play “after it was over” was incredible and we don’t win the game without him. @thomasna, I mean BK, calling that long pass to Davis with a minute left was a game changer.

It was Over When, Part 2- Clemson gets the ball on the 1st possession of the OT and scores 2 plays in. I’ve seen this movie before. Again. I knew it was over. Again. Except… it wasn’t. Look back on the D and see the next paragraph.

Book- Let me leave this to a better poster than me:
He led the team 91 yards downfield with under two minutes to go, against one of the best teams in the country, with one of the two best defensive coordinators in the country (yeah, I'm biased). And then he led them to two TD's in OT. In that span of time, he made decisions and he made plays that rank with the best clutch performances I've seen from an ND QB going back to Terry Hanratty. Not saying it was the best -- that would be impossible to categorize, and my rear view mirror looks like the bottom of a whiskey tumbler for some of those games, but certainly among the best. He was like a prize fighter who couldn't be knocked out.

Think back to that last minute of play in the 4thQ, ND down by 7 and you just new this was gonna be yet another “moral victory.” Every receiver, Davis included, is well covered. Book is under pressure, rolls to his right and forward. The defender on Davis comes out of coverage and rushes toward Book. Book sees the opening and throws a strike to Davis for the TD. I’ve been looking back on a lot of Book throws over the last year and he consistently puts the ball where only his guys can get it or it’s incomplete. The guy is just a winner. More succinctly,
For all the disbelievers? Bite me.
If you want to see how great he performed in this game, check this out: Login to view embedded media
Skowronek- I had to come back to him to finish my thoughts, right? He absolutely clawed his way to a 1st down in the 2ndQ. Sure he missed 3rd and 7 (absolutely should have been PI) and dropped 4th and 7 in what I thought would be the end. Then he missed a couple in the OT frames before coming up big for 10 yards in the final OT to set up a TD. Redemption sure, but I love when a a guy who wasn’t a ND guy (NW grad transfer) becomes a ND guy and part of the lore. Train of thought complete. Other thoughts ahead:

Officiating- I’ve never seen worse officiating. Ever. Two plays and one incident come to mind. 6:06 of the 2ndQ how was that not PI and then at 2:15 of the 4thQ there is a PI flag on the pass to Skowronek and it doesn’t stick. I was listening on the radio at that point and those announcers said Swinney should have received an Unsportsmanlike Conduct penalty yet neither penalty materialized. Disgusting.

JOK/Hayes- Huge plays from NFL caliber, 1st round D players changed this game. You saw the fumble retuned for a TD and the 2ndOT sacks. Nothing I can say can do justice to those plays.

Tremble- 2 big 3rd and 4 receptions in the 1stQ to get the team rolling and blew up the D on a block when Williams scored the tying TD. He’s just a bad man.

McKinley- BK was right. This guy is a big time receiver. That high point reception around 11:00 in the 1st and the long reception in the 3rdQ were as good a catches as you’ll see in CFB. Throw in a big catch on the tying drive and this guy is an all star.

Mayer- A couple of mis-steps to be sure, (dropped TD pass and off-sides), but this kid is a big time talent. 5-67 including a big 15 yarder in the 1st OT, and he’s a true freshman.

Shayne Sinon- I ripped his last week and I saw him get burned on an easy pass in the 2ndQ but this was the game where he showed what he can be and I was impressed- 4 tackles to include one for a loss and he was everywhere during the game.
Simon came out and played like we hoped he could, picked a great game for a coming out party...

Warts- Nothing's perfect. Some terrible penalties and questionable play calling. Getting away from the run in the 2nd half was ill-advised. Here are a few other good points:
Offside on 4th and inside the 1: FG instead of TD
Dropped pass by tight end in the end zone: FG instead of TD
Touchback after coughing the ball up inside the five: Would be TD

Dabo even said at halftime, Clemson was lucky to be down by only 10.

Post-Game Post of the Game- All encompassing really, covering the conditioning level and the way this game was won in the trenches. So well said: “Body by Balis:”
Man do our guys seem fresh at the end of a game. Our OL is just mailing and wearing everyone down. DL rotation is on point too.
My post game conversation with @cheta41 was centered around how we seemed to wear Clemson down. God, how things have changed. We used to be the ones worn down at the end.

Around the Horn- CBS Sports Bryant McFadden said ND played “bully ball” with Clemson. Tom Luginbill said ND beat Clemson in the trenches (true) and that Clemson was athletically superior to ND (he watched a different game than I did). EJ Manuel said ND commanded the line of scrimmage on both sides. Heather Dinich says BK has far more credibility. I say ND is 30-3 in their last 33 games.

Moving On- 27 years ago the Irish defeated the #1 team in the country. At home. And then played BC. Let’s learn from history and not repeat it. At least this one is on the road!

Stay healthy folks.

Recruiting Rivals100 Visitor In December...

Evanston (Ill.) High class of 2022 linebacker Sebastian Cheeks just reached out to me to let me know that he's planning to visit Notre Dame for the weekend of Dec. 5 when the Irish hosts Syracuse for its next home game.

I feel like a broken record because I say this so much, but I have to mention that he can't see the coaching staff due to the dead period. He hasn't been to Notre Dame in a year, so he's looking forward to getting around campus. He may be with some other ND commits as well.

ND's 1st Down Play Calling & Efficiency

As many have pointed out, one of the many great things about Sat night's victory over Clemson was that we did so without playing a perfect game. We played very well, of course, but we can all point to some areas where improvement is possible going forward.

To this end, throughout the game, my friends and I were talking about our 1st down play calling, and more importantly, what felt like a very inefficient performance. I decided to go back and track the numbers from the game, and I think they confirm our views (though admittedly having never done this before, I do not have the relative context to know for sure).

Here are some play call stats:
1st Down Plays Run: 36
Q1 - 8 1st Down Plays: 5 run / 3 pass
Q2 - 9 1st Down Plays: 5 run / 4 pass
Q3 - 4 1st Down Plays: 3 run / 1 pass
Q4 - 10 1st Down Plays: 3 run / 7 pass
OT (combined) - 5 1st Down Plays: 4 run / 1 pass
Run Plays: 20 (56%) -
15 to a RB (Kyren (13) / Tyree (2))
5 to Book
Pass Plays: 16 (44%) - 10 Complete / 2 Incomplete / 2 Throwaways / 2 Sacks
9 to a WR (McKinely (4) / Davis (4) / Skoronek (1))
2 to a TE (Wright (1) / Mayer (1))
1 to a RB (Kyren Williams (1))

And more importantly, performance stats:
Number of Negative Yard Plays: 8 (22%)
Number of No Gain Plays: 7 (19%)
Number of 1-3 Yard Plays: 6 (17%)
Number of 4-9 Yard Plays: 8 (22%)
Number of 10+ Yard Plays: 7 (19%)
Average Yard per 1st Down Play: 6.9 yds
Weighted higher as it includes a 65yd run, a 45yd pass, and a 53yd pass
Median Yard per 1st Down Play: 1.5 yds
Red Zone 1st Down Plays: 6
Average Yard per 1st Down Play in Red Zone: 1.5 yds
Number of No Gain or Negative Yard Plays in Red Zone: 2 (1 Run / 1 Incomplete Pass)
Number of 1-3 Yard Plays in Red Zone: 3 (3 Runs)
Number of 4+ Yard Plays in Red Zone: 1 (1 Pass)

Taking in all those numbers, it seems to me that gaining 3yds or less on 1st down 58% of the time isn't good. Especially when you consider the strength of our OL/running game. And more specifically, gaining no yards or losing yards on 41% of 1st downs seems completely unacceptable. Even if the incomplete passes are removed, there were still 11 plays (31%) of 1st downs where we went nowhere or backwards.

I'm not using this post to suggest alternative play calls myself, but rather just to share my findings and highlight an area where I think some improvement would be impactful. I put this right up there with the need to improve our red zone efficiency.

I'm sure some of you have already rewatched the game. I did too. My thoughts:

Recruiting Detailing A New FutureCast Pick For Notre Dame

Here are some breakfast nuggets for your Tuesday...

*** I've had Honolulu Punahou class of 2021 linebacker Kahuna Kia on my radar for a potential FutureCast pick ever since the Irish offered him Sept. 1, and following his weekend visit in South Bend, I've put in that pick. His final four schools is Notre Dame, Stanford, UCLA and Utah; he visited Utah and Notre Dame last week and will be at UCLA and Stanford in the coming days. This recruitment is not over by any stretch with his trips this week, but I just have a hard time seeing his California visits topping the experience he had in South Bend for the weekend Notre Dame beat Clemson.

*** Stanford and UCLA don't concern me. Utah does though. It's the safer choice. His father played football there, he has family in Utah, and it's easier to travel to. But again, his two and a half day experience in Notre Dame went very well, despite the fact he couldn't see the coaches or tour the facilities. The weather being gorgeous certainly helped; Kia felt like home in South Bend. His connection with former Punahou teammate and current Irish linebacker Marist Liufau could go a long ways here too.

*** I'm expecting Kia to make a commitment by the end of this month, and I believe Notre Dame has put itself in great position to land his pledge. Defensive coordinator Clark Lea, defensive analyst Nick Lezynski and recruiting coordinator Brian Polian have all done a nice job in this recruitment. Kia does plan to take an LDS Mission Trip after high school, but he's been clear that he'll take his mission on the timeline that best fits what the coaching staff wants. In Notre Dame's case, he'd enroll at Notre Dame for his freshman year, take his trip and come back.

Recruiting Lucky Charms: More 2021 Notre Dame Football Recruiting Scoop

Here are tonight's Lucky Charms...

*** Notre Dame recently offered 2021 running back Byron Cardwell, a 6-0, 200-pound back out of San Diego (Calif.) Samuel Morse, on Monday. We caught up with Cardwell’s head coach, Tracy McNair, who spoke highly of Notre Dame, saying that he and Cardwell both ‘grew up on the movie Rudy’ and that Notre Dame is a special place. He expects the Irish to be a contender for his player’s pledge.

*** It appears Notre Dame is actively looking to add a second running back in the 2021 class with this offer and its pursuit of West Bloomfield (Mich.) High’s Donovan Edwards. We’ve also reported that Montvale (N.J.) St. Joseph’s Audric Estime is very much on Notre Dame’s radar, and we feel that the Irish have a strong chance to flip him. Look for Estime to visit Notre Dame in early December. Going back to Cardwell, he told us on Tuesday evening that he’s not looking to sign with a school in December. He’s hoping visits open up and he can take a trip to South Bend as well, but even if they don’t, he’s still looking to get to Notre Dame.

*** Valrico (Fla.) Bloomingdale defensive back Philip Riley is probably the most popular name on our message board right now. The latest we’re told is that Notre Dame’s potential flip of Riley from USC is still in the works but nothing is imminent at this time. I’ve heard from a couple of people on the west coast (where Riley is from and of course USC is located) that said Riley is still going strong with his Trojans’ pledge, but I just don’t buy it. This smells a lot like his first flip from the Irish to USC, but I will not predict anything with Riley. We’ll just have to wait and see what he does.

*** As I reported last night in Lucky Charms, Notre Dame had a Zoom call with Highlands Springs (Va.) High defensive lineman and Oklahoma pledge Kelvin Gilliam last night. He’s very much listening to the Irish’s pitch and I’m told the conversation went well. Gilliam and his parents wanted to know why the offer came late in the process, and the Irish explained that they had transfers along the defensive line. Gilliam is very up front with Oklahoma about everything going on, which helps the Sooners’ staff stay out ahead of a potential flip. My gut says Gilliam remains with Oklahoma, but don’t be surprised if he holds off until February to make a decision.

*** We don’t believe Notre Dame has completely given up yet, but the Irish staff isn’t making much progress with Indianapolis (Ind.) North Central 2021 athlete Theran Johnson. He committed to Northwestern in May and appears completely locked in with the Wildcats. Notre Dame offered him in September, and it looked promising at first, but Johnson just never was that interested in the Irish. Respect to him for staying with his commitment.

Daelin Hayes Solo Sack

Are there any good high resolution photos floating around showing the moment he jumped up on DJ’s back? Would love to find one if someone knows about it.

It was at that moment that I finally thought “holy shit we’re actually going to win this thing.” Having had my heart stomped on so many times the last 20 years or so...

It was great to share that moment with Goat Jr. Like most 16-year-olds, it’s rare that he spends an entire three hours with the old guy. But last night he did.

Go Irish

November 11: This Day In Notre Dame History

The Irish are 11-5-1, with the most recent a 41-8 loss at Miami in 2017 when the Irish were 8-1, No. 3 in the CFP poll and on the cusp of a playoff bid, just like now:

Bronze Medal, 1972: The Townsend brothers shine in a hard fought 21-7 Notre Dame win at Air Force. Defensive back Mike intercepts a single game school record three passes (he would lead the nation this year with 10), while top receiver Willie catches a 23-yard pass to set up the game's first score and nabs a 13-yard touchdown pass from Tom Clements to provide a 14-0 halftime lead, which would proved to be the winning tally. The Townsends also are members of second-year head coach Digger Phelps' basketball team after football season.

Silver Medal, 1978: The first meeting ever between Notre Dame and Tennessee is also the final home game for ND's senior captains Joe Montana, Bob Golic and Jerome Heavens, the school's all-time leading rusher, who helped propel a national title a year earlier. After trailing 7-6 at halftime, a blocked punt by freshman Bob Crable sets up the Irish for the go-ahead score in a 31-14 win, the seventh straight against the nation's No. 1 schedule that is placing more emphasis on playing SEC or southern-based teams such as Alabama (1976 and 1980), Ole Miss (1977 and 1985), LSU (1981, 1984-86), South Carolina (1976, 1979), Clemson (1977 and 1979) and Tennessee (1978-79).

Gold Medal, 1989: In one of the greatest mismatches in Notre Dame Stadium history, the No. 1-ranked and reigning national champion Irish roll to a 59-6 victory over SMU, which is in its first season of coming off the NCAA "death penalty" for repeated violations. More pertinent is that this is Notre Dame's 22nd consecutive victory — breaking the school record 21 from 1946-48 that ended with a tie. It also was Senior Day, honoring Lou Holtz's first recruited class with the Irish that is led by QB Tony Rice. Later, Holtz, who told his players not to score at the end to show some mercy, is accused of "point shaving" because the Irish were favored by 53.5.

OT: That La Russa hiring is just looking better and better

Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic wrote an article today chronicling Tony La Russa being charged with a DUI last winter. He said the White Sox was aware of this before they hired La Russa. He also confirmed what we all expected; that this hire was solely a decision by White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf:

The White Sox were aware of the Hall of Fame manager’s arrest in February before hiring him, team spokesman Scott Reifert said. Reinsdorf, hellbent on making up for his mistake of firing La Russa in 1986, went ahead anyway, turning the La Russa Express into a runaway train. White Sox officials told rival executives they stood by helplessly as the train blew past, unable to stop their owner from bringing his longtime friend back into the organization.

On his radio show this morning, David Kaplan said that White Sox executives Kenny Williams and Rick Hahn were blindsided by the La Russa hire. This was a decision made by Jerry Reinsdorf with no input from anyone else.

La Russa is a known control freak. It will be real interesting to see the conflict and disorder in the White Sox organization going forward.
