Recruiting 2026 four-star defender Simeon Caldwell enthusiastic after Notre Dame visit

Notre Dame football hosted 2026 safety/linebacker target Simeon Caldwell on a visit last Saturday, and he left a positive impression on the coaching staff per @Tyler James' visitors intel.

Caldwell reports 18 total offers including Florida State, Georgia, Miami (Fla.), Ohio State, Michigan, Tennessee, Texas and Texas A&M. This was Caldwell's first visit to ND since picking up an offer last month on Pot of Gold Day.

Per Rivals, Caldwell is the No. 106 overall player and No. 7 safety in the 2026 recruiting class. The Irish view him as a safety or linebacker at the college level. From our conversation, I've gathered Caldwell has struck up the closest relationship with defensive coordinator Al Golden thus far in his recruitment.

The 6-foot-1, 180-pound Caldwell attends Jacksonville (Fla.) Bolles and is the son of Las Vegas Raiders defensive run game coordinator/linebackers coach Mike Caldwell.

I connected with Simeon on Monday night to speak about his visit, connection with the staff, interest going forward and more.

On his experience:

"The visit was amazing, it feels like I went on a perfect day," Simeon told Inside ND Sports. "To be able to witness their jersey scrimmage was awesome. I spent some time with [head] coach [Marcus] Freeman and Golden but I would say I spent most of my time with [linebackers] coach [Max] Bullough. I was able to see the intensity of the practice and competitiveness of the players, and campus was very beautiful. Despite Notre Dame being a smaller school, the campus was very big and has lots of historical buildings."

On Freeman and Golden:

"I loved coach Freeman and coach Golden as well as the entire coaching staff. Despite it being my first time meeting them in person, I felt so natural and comfortable talking to them. Being in the team meeting let me see the trust and confidence the coaches have in the players. In my individual meetings, they made it clear I was one of their top priorities in the class and that seeing my body in person, they think I have the ability to play both safety and linebacker."

On how the visit resonated with him after leaving:

"They made sure I left my visit knowing that if I decided to go to school there, I would be getting the best of both worlds in not only top-level football but that I'll also be attending one of the top non-Ivy League schools in the country. Getting on the plane back to Jacksonville was kind of a little disappointing because it felt like the visit was so short ... but that just means I definitely have to make a return trip to South Bend."

As a sophomore, Simeon totaled 137 tackles (93 solo) and 11 for loss. He also had five quarterback hurries, two blocked punts, two interceptions, one sack, one forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

Texas, Florida State, Georgia, Tennessee and Ohio State hosted Simeon on unofficial visits earlier this spring.

Recruiting Rivals Camps Series Charlotte: Rumor Mill with WR commit Elijah Burress

@RivalsFriedman and @John Garcia Jr. published a story today: Rivals Camp Series Charlotte: Recruiting Rumor Mill surrounding WRs and TEs.

Notre Dame WR commit Elijah Burress is discussed in it. But it's all good news for the Irish. Burress "isn’t entertaining many other calls that come in for him." And he's trying to recruit WR Tanook Hines to join him.

Football Update: CB Clarence Lewis commits to transfer to Syracuse

Notre Dame cornerback Clarence Lewis has entered the transfer portal, Inside ND Sports has learned. Because he's a graduate transfer, he doesn't have to wait for the April 16-30 spring transfer portal window to open.

Lewis was working as a starting cornerback in practice this week due to Benjamin Morrison being sidelined with an injury. Though if the Irish were playing in a game without Morrison, I'd expect Jaden Mickey and Christian Gray to be the starters.

Lewis would be a solid depth piece to have, but it's hard to hang onto those these days.

Story:

Update: Lewis committed to Syracuse on Tuesday morning.

Recruiting Intel: How Notre Dame fared with targets who visited Saturday

Notre Dame hosted another crop of visitors last weekend. Here’s what we’re hearing about how the visits went and where the Irish stand with some of the 2025 and 2026 targets who made it campus and one important visit for a 2025 commit.

2025 CB target Trystan Haynes
Given that I put a FutureCast in for Haynes to eventually pick Notre Dame prior to his visit, there were expectations for his visit to go well. While Haynes isn’t wrapping up his recruitment at this stage, I was told by a source that visit was “excellent.” Notre Dame is a place that really appeals to Haynes, which is why his family drove 12 hours on Friday and 12 hours on Sunday to be there Saturday. Oklahoma likely remains the biggest threat for Notre Dame as the home-state school, but he’s had plenty of opportunities to commit to the Sooners at this point. As we previously reported in The Heat Index, Haynes plans to return for an official visit June 14-16.

2025 LB target Madden Faraimo
I can’t stress enough how high Notre Dame’s coaching staff is on Faraimo. I think he’d be the ideal finish to the position for the Irish, even though there are some other highly ranked options in that conversation too. Notre Dame believes it killed the visit and allowed Faraimo to fall in love with Notre Dame again. Faraimo made the visit alongside his mom, which is an important voice in his recruitment. USC is likely the top competition for the California product. If Faraimo can get over the distance hurdle, he may very well end up at Notre Dame.

2025 S commit Ivan Taylor
I wanted to do some digging on Taylor’s visit, because it was his first time back on campus since safeties coach Chris O’Leary left for the LA Chargers. One source told me the visit went “awesome.” Taylor wanted to sit down and talk football the whole time. Apparently he’s doing really well in the classroom back at Winter Garden (Fla.) West Orange. A source told me that ND would love to have a recruit like Taylor at every position.

2026 LB target Simeon Caldwell
I didn’t know Caldwell had made his way to campus until later in the weekend. The Irish offered him on Pot of Gold Day, so he took the visit. He could be a safety or a linebacker at the next level. A source called him a “perfect Notre Dame kid.” He’s the son of Las Vegas Raiders defensive run game coordinator/linebackers coach Mike Caldwell, who spent the last two seasons as the defensive coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars. Look for the Irish to be a player in Simeon’s recruitment moving forward.

2026 DE target Rodney Dunham
Dunham is another recruit that was described as a Notre Dame type of kid. He’s a baseball player as well, so we’ll see how much that plays in his recruitment in the future. We’ll see who else emerges as top competition for him, but I’d expect Notre Dame to be in the mix for this Charlotte area recruit.

2026 DE target Jerimy "JJ" Finch Jr.
You don’t really need anyone to tell you anything about Finch’s interest in Notre Dame. It’s obvious given that he visited Notre Dame twice last week — on Monday and Saturday — and he’s expected to return this weekend for the Blue-Gold Game. Notre Dame’s still getting to know Finch better as he’s a bit on the quieter side, but he’s someone I anticipate the Irish will push for early as long as everything checks out.

2026 CB target Brandon Lockhart
The USC commit made his first visit to Notre Dame, and it seems clear that he’s open to going elsewhere. The Irish aren’t the only ones that are trying to get him to do so. But this visit opened his eyes to what Notre Dame could do for him, I’m told.

2026 CB target RJ Sermons
Sermons is another California product who’s entertaining the idea of leaving the West Coast. Even though his father, Rodney Sermons, played running back at USC, he’s not necessarily a lock to become a Trojan. A source told me that Notre Dame “blew away expectations” for Sermons on his visit.

2026 OL target George Haseotes
I’m not sure Notre Dame’s going to be much a real player in Haseotes’ recruitment. I expect Notre Dame to find other offensive line recruits its likes better, such as recent visitors Gregory Patrick and Ben Nichols.

Recruiting A couple of recruiting notes

I'm running behind on putting my recruiting intel piece from the visitors weekend together. I was waiting to hear back from someone and just did.

The full report might not get finished until after Football Never Sleeps, but here are a couple things I was able to confirm:

2025 DT target Javeon Campbell didn't visit on Saturday. It's looking like Notre Dame's not going to be in the running in that recruitment much longer. He started out as a recruit that Notre Dame offered ahead of others and hoped to get him to camp in the summer. But now he's really blown up with Alabama, Auburn, LSU, Florida, Georgia and Ohio State trying to pull him away from Kentucky.

Notre Dame will need to reevaluate some options if it wants to add another defensive lineman to the class with Damien Shanklin, Darren Ikinnagbon and Campbell all trending away.

2025 OT target Josh Petty has rescheduled his visit to Notre Dame that he originally planned to make last week. The four-star recruit will fly up from Atlanta on Wednesday for a quick visit to see the Irish. We'll have a better sense if Notre Dame can become a real contender for Petty following the visit.

NIL - abuses?

@Tyler James and @Eric Hansen

Several years ago a HS AD friend of mine expressed concerns over NIL and how it would create “dark money” abuses akin to the SMU and SWAC scandals of the 70’s and early 80’s. His biggest issue was that he had no confidence that the NCAA would do anything more than play catchup to the schemers and abusers.

Fast forward to today and the report by the San Francisco Chronicle that Kiki Iriafen had been “receiving offers upward of $700,000 in NIL money throughout the Stanford season from other collectives”.

My question - isn’t there a mechanism in place to protect the student-athletes from this type of “tampering”?

Football Notebook: 'Gunslinger' Kenny Minchey finds comfort in pre-snap reads for ND

“There’s not a window small enough that he doesn’t think he can throw the ball through” Gino Guidugli said of Kenny Minchey. “Gunslinger. He don’t see a pass he don’t like. You like that, but you kind of have to harness that.”

Football What I saw in Notre Dame's scrimmage Saturday in Notre Dame Stadium

Note: Because we actually had so much to watch, I’ll leave the notes on the folks who didn’t participate until the end.

Notre Dame started Saturday’s practice with only three periods before getting underway with its jersey scrimmage. Those periods were mostly focused on special teams. During field goal work, Mitch Jeter made five of his six attempts. He made kicks from 26, 35, 38, 22 and 29 but missed right on a 36-yarder. The Irish also worked on punt coverage.

The scrimmage started with the No. 1 offense going up against the No. 2 defense. Rather than a true scrimmage, the first few rotations through were filled by a set number of plays. So even if the offense went three-and-out to start the series, the chains were reset and the number of plays allotted were finished.

Here’s how the No. 1 offense lined up to start: quarterback Steve Angeli, running back Jeremiyah Love, boundary wide receiver Micah Gilbert, slot wide receiver Jaden Greathouse, field wide receiver Kris Mitchell, tight end Cooper Flanagan, left tackle Charles Jagusah, left guard Pat Coogan, center Ashton Craig, right guard Billy Schrauth and tight tackle Tosh Baker.

No. 2 defense: vyper end Junior Tuihalamaka, defensive tackle Jason Onye, nose tackle Donovan Hinish, field end Joshua Burnham, mike linebacker Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa, will linebacker Jaylen Sneed, rover linebacker Jaiden Ausberry, cornerbacks Chance Tucker and Micah Bell and safeties Luke Talich and Kennedy Urlacher.

The Irish offense didn’t do much in their six plays, which included a false start. Angeli completed two passes to pick up a first down after being backed up to first-and-15. He hit Flanagan for 11 yards and Mitchell for six yards. The series ended with a incomplete pass deep down the field to Gilbert.

Then the No. 1 defense took the field against the No. 2 offense.

No. 1 defense: vyper Jordan Botelho, defensive tackle Rylie Mills, nose tackle Howard Cross III, field end RJ Oben, mike linebacker Drayk Bowen, will linebacker Jack Kiser, nickelback Jordan Clark, cornerbacks Christian Gray and Jaden Mickey and safeties Adon Shuler and Xavier Watts.

No. 2 offense: quarterback Kenny Minchey, running back Jadarian Price, boundary receiver Deion Colzie, slot receiver KK Smith, field receiver Cam Williams, tight end Eli Raridon, left tackle Sullivan Absher, left guard Rocco Spindler, center Sam Pendleton, right guard Ty Chan, right tackle Aamil Wagner.

The defense set the tone in this series with a Clark sack on second down and Sneed sack on third-and-long. Minchey completed a couple of passes to Williams for eight and six yards to end the series.

Last, the third units took the field.

No. 3 offense: quarterback CJ Carr, running back Aneyas Williams, boundary receiver Alex Whitman, slot receiver Jack Polian, field receiver Cam Williams, tight end Jack Larsen, left tackle Ty Chan, left guard Peter Jones, center Joe Otting, right guard Chris Terek and right tackle Anthonie Knapp.

No. 3 defense: vyper Boubacar Traore, nose tackle Sean Sevillano Jr., defensive tackle Cole Mullins, field end Bryce Young, mike linebacker Preston Zinter, will linebacker Kahanu Kia, rover linebacker Jaiden Ausberry, cornerbacks Mickey Brown and Marty Auer and safeties Devyn Ford and Kennedy Urlacher.

The only notable play from the first series with the 3s was a nice stuffed run by Young and Kia.

1 offense vs. 1 defense – Angeli at QB

Then came the first matchup of first-team offense and defense with the offense starting on its own three-yard line. A pair of Price runs set the offense up with a third-and-3, which Angeli converted with a six-yard pass to Flanagan.

Then Angeli seemed to find a groove with a 30-yard completion and 18-yard completion to Greathouse, who was the best receiver for the Irish all day. After a six-yard run by Price, Angeli made a mistake that Mickey took advantage of. He jumped an out route by Mitchell and returned the interception for touchdown of 70-plus yards. Angeli didn’t drive the ball to the outside on the wide side of the field and allowed Mickey to make the play.

2 offense vs. 2 defense – Minchey at QB

Love got a lot of action at running back without a lot of success. Burnham took him down for a tackle for loss on the first play. Love picked up four on the next play. On third-and-6, Tucker broke up a slant thrown to Colzie.

A four-yard gain by Love started the next set of downs, but it became a disaster from there. A low snap by Pendleton led to Love getting stuffed for no go gain. Then a delay of game and false start backed up the Irish even more. Minchey escaped the pocket to throw an incomplete pass on fourth-and-long, but he likely would have been sacked by unblocked pressure from Tuihalamaka.

1 offense vs. 1 defense – Minchey at QB

Clark made it impossible to complete a receiver screen to Greathouse to start the drive. Minchey scrambled for nine yards on second down, but he should have been called for a sack by Mills, who overpowered Baker on a stunt. Payne picked up the third-and-1 on the ground.

Minchey completed a three-yard pass to Flanagan of first down. A deep shot to Gilbert on second down was broken up by Gray. Botelho provided pressure on the play. A 10-yard pass to Smith converted the third down and put the offense at the 17-yard line.

Love ran over Shuler and jumped over him on the ground on his way to a 10-yard gain. That was easily the most impressive run of the day. Minchey ended the drive with a six-yard touchdown run on a RPO play that included a fake to a running back, a fake to a receiver in jet motion and had a tight end option for a pass. Minchey wisely ran it in for the touchdown.

2 offense vs. 2 defense – Carr at QB

Carr really started to impress this drive. He thew a short completion to Love for four yards. He tried to throw deep to Colzie on second down by Tucker was running right with him the whole time. Then on third down, Carr connected with Mitchell on a dig route for a 19-yard completion.

Bowen backed up the offense with a sack of Carr. He came unblocked off the left side of the offense. Then Carr found Cam Williams for a 17-yard touchdown on a post with Tucker trailing him. This might have been the best throw of the day.

Recruiting 2026 DE target Rodney Dunham loves all aspects of first Notre Dame visit

Notre Dame football 2026 defensive end target Rodney Dunham visited campus on Saturday for his first look at the Irish since receiving an offer on Pot of Gold Day.

After striking up a relationship over the phone, Dunham, a four-star recruit out of Charlotte (N.C.) Myers Park, made it a priority to check out Notre Dame and meet its coaching staff after taking visits earlier this spring to Duke and South Carolina.

The 6-foot-5, 210-pound Dunham is ranked as the No. 190 overall player and No. 10 weakside defensive end in the 2026 recruiting class. He reports nine total offers including Duke, Florida State, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia Tech.

I caught up with Dunham on Sunday to discuss his visit, time with the coaching staff, impressions of the program, takeaways from the team scrimmage and more.

On his experience around the coaching staff:

"My impressions of the coaching staff was that they’re honest, good coaches that care about their players," Dunham told Inside ND Sports. "Overall, each coach brought something unique to the table but they all shared a common dedication to the team’s success and the development of their players. Being around them was not only educational but also enjoyable."

On what he saw during the scrimmage:

"I learned that Notre Dame football is high-speed and intense," Dunham said, "I mean, the guys were out there playing like a game. I really enjoyed that out of the program. Yeah ... what stuck out to me was the vyper end, I felt like that was a good concept."

On how ND's coaches concluded his visit:

"The message the coaching staff gave to me was that, 'At Notre Dame, you’ll have a chance of winning a National Championship and earning a world-class degree. Notre Dame also has the most NFL draftees,'" Dunham said. "And so for me, it just felt like Notre Dame seems like a win-win-win situation. There isn’t anything this school doesn’t have to offer."

Dunham said his relationship with Notre Dame is in a great place, along with schools like Duke and North Carolina, entering the summer.

BAS: North Carolina completes 3-game sweep of Irish with 10-3 win

Aidan Haugh threw five shutout innings and Vance Honeycutt went 3-for-5 and homered for the second consecutive game as 13th-ranked North Carolina drubbed Notre Dame, 10-3, Sunday to sweep a three-game ACC baseball series in Chapel Hall, N.C.

The Tar Heels (29-7, 14-4 ACC) outscored the Irish (15-18, 2-16) by a combined 30-5 in sending Notre Dame to its eighth, ninth and 10th successive league defeats.

Some bright spots for the Irish were Brady Gumpf, who 2-for-4, with a double and an RBI, and Esteban Moreno, who doubled twice in four at-bats. Shortstop Jack Penney hit a two-run homer, his seventh long ball of the season.

Rory Fox (1-1) started for the Irish on the mound and took the loss. He went 3 ⅔ innings, giving up eight hits and seven runs, five of which were earned. He walked two and struck out one.

Notre Dame has a pair of midweek non-conference home games — Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. vs. Valparaiso (11-22) and Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. against Purdue-Fort Wayne (13-22) — before welcoming Boston College (19-16, 7-11) in for a three-game ACC series beginning Friday.
