Notre Dame men's basketball and head coach Micah Shrewsberry added shooting guard Julian Roper II from the transfer portal Tuesday evening. Roper joins the Irish after spending his first two seasons at Northwestern.

The 6-foot-3, 180-pound guard appeared in 44 games across two seasons and made 15 starts in 2021-22 as a true freshman. He holds career averages of 4.1 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.0 assists per game. He shot 42% from the 3-point line last season, a career-high.

As a sophomore, Roper was limited to 15 games after suffering an ankle injury against Wisconsin Jan. 23 and re-aggravating the injury Feb.2 against Michigan. He went on to miss the remainder of the regular season, Big Ten tournament and NCAA Tournament.

Roper was rated as a three-star recruit in the 2021 recruiting class. He was ranked as the No. 33 shooting guard and the No. 142 overall player in the class. He played at Detriot (Mich) St. Mary's and held 13 offers including Alabama, Illinois, Ohio State and Wisconsin before committing to Northwestern in May 2020.

BAS: Irish edge Western Michigan, 2-1, ahead of key ACC series with No. 8 Virginia

Brady Gumpf’s seventh-inning sacrifice fly scored pinch runner Brooks Coetzee with the tie-breaking run as Notre Dame edged visiting Western Michigan, 2-1, Wednesday in a non-conference college baseball game.

Sophomore righty Ricky Reeth picked up his first career victory with four innings of hitless relief for the Irish (20-15). He allowed a walk and struck out five.
Including the two innings Justin Moore pitched prior to Reeth’s appearance, the Notre Dame bullpen has strung together 14 ⅓ consecutive scoreless innings dating back to Sunday’s 6-4 loss at Clemson.

Western Michigan (10-24) scored its only run Wednesday off freshman starter David Lally Jr. Four Broncos pitchers limited the Irish to five hits, but Notre Dame drew seven walks and were hit by a pitch four times.

TJ Williams had a double among his two hits. Third baseman Jack Penney scored on a wild pitch for ND’s other run.

Next up for the Irish is a three-game series at Eck Stadium with eighth-ranked Virginia (32-6, 12-6 ACC), beginning Friday at 6 p.m. EDT. The Cavaliers lead the nation in batting average (.342) and doubles per game (2.82), ranked fifth in both on-base percentage (.411) and scoring (9.6), and are fourth in ERA (3.27).

Football OL Caleb Johnson officially enters transfer portal

Junior-to-be offensive tackle Caleb Johnson officially entered the transfer portal Wednesday, Inside ND Sports confirmed.

Johnson has not been practicing with Notre Dame this spring. Being the third offensive tackle in a class with Joe Alt and Blake Fisher turned out to be a tough break for Johnson.

We wrote about Johnson earlier this spring when he left the team:

Recruiting Visiting today

In addition to 2024 DE target Cole Mullins, who @Charleston Bowles wrote about here, 2025 DE target Gabe Kaminski is also on campus today. Kaminski received his Notre Dame offer on Pot of Gold Day in March.

Kaminski attends the same high school that sent CB Julian Love to Notre Dame: La Grange Park (Ill.) Nazareth Academy

Football Why Lorenzo Styles was ready for the challenge of playing cornerback at ND

Wide receiver Lorenzo Styles didn't approach a potential position switch to cornerback with trepidation. With only one full practice under his belt, he's not flinching.

“If I’m being honest, it felt like riding a bike a little bit,” Styles said. “I was out there today and felt really good, really confident. I don’t fully grasp the defense yet, just because I’ve only been in like one or two meetings. So that was a little bit hard for me. Then there’s definitely some technical things [to work on].

“Already playing in the college game, I’m already caught up with the pace of the game and the speed of it. I felt good today.”

Football Media schedule for spring football

Notre Dame shared with us the media schedule for spring football, which begins March 22 and ends April 22 with the Blue-Gold Game. We'll have the opportunity to watch the first five periods of three practices and one full practice, which is the same amount we had access to last spring.

It's not an enlightening amount of practice viewing, but we do get a lot of access to players and coaches. We'll get Marcus Freeman twice leading up to the Blue-Gold Game, offensive coordinator Gerad Parker and defensive coordinator Al Golden twice, every position coach once and players from each position group.

Here's what the schedule looks like:

3/22 - Freeman (First five periods of practice)
3/24 - Pro Day
3/25 - Parker and TEs (First five periods)

3/29 - Golden and LBs
3/31 - Gino Guidugli and QBs
4/1 - Marty Biagi and specialists (Full practice)*
*Biagi's name wasn't on the schedule, but we know that's who the ST coordinator will be.

4/4 - Chris O'Leary and S
4/6 - Deland McCullough and RBs

4/12 - Al Washington and DL (Full practice)
4/14 - Joe Rudolph and OL
4/15 - Freeman, Parker and Golden

4/18 - Mike Mickens and CBs
4/19 - Chansi Stuckey and WRs
4/21 - Blue-Gold Game

Football Lorenzo Styles on trying out at cornerback

I'll have a story on Styles later with comments from cornerbacks coach Mike Mickens as well, but I thought I'd get this transcript to you ASAP.

LORENZO STYLES

What’s it been like playing on the other side of the ball?

“It’s been great. I really got to have a full practice today. Talked to coach Freeman about doing what’s best for the team. I feel really comfortable back there. I have a background and stuff. It feels good.”

What went into that conversation and process?

“Coach Freeman and all the coaches made the compliment like, ‘Hey, you can be a great DB,’ but it was really the decision was up to me. I felt like I could really help the team there, be a great player there, so that’s what it really came down to.”

Is this something that you’d like to be full-time?

“I’m a football player. So if they want me to go catch some passes, I’ll go catch some passes and make some plays. If they want me to go lock some people down, I can go do that too. I feel pretty confident in both.”

What went into why you felt you could do this?

“I’m a great a football player. I even think being on the offensive side will help me play defensive back. Coach Freeman and them were just saying some things like, ‘Hey, I think you’d be great back there.’ If that will help the team, I’m going to go back there and try it out.”

Are you still planning to go both ways in the Blue-Gold Game?

“That’s the plan they have for me.”

Was there a moment you knew you wanted to do this?

“I don’t really know if there was anything specific. It all goes back to I love playing football. I’m a great football player. That can be on offense or defense, special teams, whatever that may be. Anyway I can make an impact. Being able to play both ways or focusing on either, I can have an impact on the game.”

What’s it like covering your friends at wide receiver?

“It’s fun. I’ve been in the meetings with them. I know what they’re thinking a little bit. I have an idea of what the offense is trying to do. So it makes it a little bit easier on me. I love going against those guys. We have some great players at wideout. It’s fun going against them in practice.”

Do you know any of their tendencies or tells?

“I do know, but I don’t know if I can say that right now.”

How helpful has Cam Hart been as someone who made the transition before?

“Cam’s one of my good friends, so I’ve talked to him about it. He talked a little bit about his transition. I took that into account for me. It really came down to what was in my heart, and what I wanted to do. I wasn’t really letting everyone else’s view shape what I’m going to do.”

Did drops become a mental challenge for you last season?

“I just had a little bit of a mental challenge, but I definitely got past that. I’ve been making plays all spring ball. I feel real confident gaining trust with the quarterback when I was playing receiver, gaining my trust back with the coaches. I feel really good.”

Did you get your feet down for that catch on the sideline in the video the other day?

“Of course I got my feet down. Yes sir.”

Have you talked to your brother about the move?

“He’s definitely excited. Him and my dad are defensive minds, defensive guys. I grew up really in a defensive family. They love to see me on that side of the ball for sure.”

What about your skill set makes you suited to play corner?

“Athletically, I feel like I’m a pretty gifted athlete. It’s just the technical skills. Growing up, I had that defensive background. I’ve had some defensive coaches. Being honest, when I came into college, I really didn’t have a receivers coach who I worked on that much. So that was a big transition for me when I first came here, just to get to the point where I’m at now. This transition is actually going to a lot less, because I grew up doing that a lot of the time.”

Did some of those high school skills come back to you quickly?

“If I’m being honest, it felt like riding a bike a little bit. I was out there today and felt really good, really confident. I don’t fully grasp the defense yet, just because I’ve only been in like one or two meetings. So that was a little bit hard for me. Then there’s definitely some technical things [to work on]. Already playing in the college game, I’m already caught up with the pace of the game and the speed of it. I felt good today.”

How were colleges recruiting you? As a WR? As a CB? As an ATH?

“Pretty much athlete. A lot of schools were saying I could go there and really play either way.”

And you wanted to play wide receiver?

“Yeah. It was more so my choice. I was a little bit — I wanted to catch touchdowns. But on defense, if you get an interception and take it to the house, you can score touchdowns too.”

Did you miss this in the last couple years?

“I really do like the defensive side, because it’s a different mindset. It’s more aggressive, a little bit more chaos. On offense, you have to be a little bit more calm and relaxed. At DB, you do as well, but I like to get in the action a little bit. I like it a lot.”

What’s the relationship like with coach Mickens?

“He’s a great coach. Even before, like when I was playing receiver, I was asking him, ‘What do the DBs think here when I do this type of release or do these different types of things?’ So we already had that relationship. Now it’s just transferring to a defensive mind.”

How much has your one-on-one work given you a confidence boost despite not knowing the defense?

“I don’t really know that much. I can go line up in front of someone if I have to go put hands on him. I already knew I could kind of do that. But it’s more so doing different things like actually playing the game.”

Does Benjamin Morrison’s quick success show you that you can make an impact in your first year at the position?

“I don’t necessarily think it’s Benjamin’s success. He’s a great football player. But it’s more so my skill set, knowing what I’m capable of doing and having confidence in myself to go out there and do it.”

Do you talk trash to the receivers now?

“I chirp a little bit, but I try to go about my business. I’m still just trying to get better. I’m looking to the sideline to make sure I get the call right now. I’m making sure I’m still locked in on everything and learning everything.”

Do you know what the first practice you did some cornerback reps?

“I’m not really sure.”

Recruiting 2024 DE target Cole Mullins speaks on Notre Dame before visit Wednesday

I caught up with 2024 defensive end target Cole Mullins before he plans to visit Notre Dame Wednesday. The 6-foot-4, 240-pound recruit is listed as an outside linebacker by Rivals but is being recruited as a defensive end by the Irish and defensive line coach Al Washington.

"Me and my family are extremely excited," Mullins told Inside ND Sports. "I am looking forward to meeting with all of the coaches and watching the team practice. I can tell Coach Wash cares about his players. He knows a lot about football and is really easy to communicate with."

Growing up, Mullins said he remembers watching the Irish and seeing Notre Dame Stadium full of energy.

"It means a lot to have the opportunity to play for Notre Dame," Mullins said. "The history and support the school and program have make it special."

As a junior, the Notre Dame target recorded 58 tackles and six sacks for Hoschton (Ga). Mill Creek last season. Mullins said he likes to impose his physicality in the trenches and lead his defense by example.

He hasn't been assigned a star rating or ranking by Rivals. Mullins reports 20 total offers including Duke, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Notre Dame, North Carolina, USC and Wake Forest. He visited Duke April 1-2 and also visited the Blue Devils in January.

BAS: Martinez, Irish power past Valparaiso

Vinny Martinez went 3-for-4 with two solo home runs, and DM Jefferson drove in two runs in a four-run first inning as Notre Dame beat visiting Valparaiso, 7-3, Tuesday in a non-conference college baseball game at Eck Stadium.

TJ Williams, Carter Putz and Jack Penney contributed two hits each for ND.

The Irish (19-15) got seven shutout innings from their bullpen after the Beacons (14-15) chased starter Caden Spivey after two innings. Relievers Sammy Cooper (3-1), Carter Bosch and Ryan Lynch collectively gave up two hits and a walk while striking out nine.

Next up for Notre Dame is a home non-conference matchup with Western Michigan (10-23), Wednesday at 6 p.m. EDT.

Recruiting Notes on 2025 TE target Nate Roberts

I spoke with 2025 tight end target Nate Roberts following his visit last weekend. It was his first trip to Notre Dame since landing an offer on ND’s annual Pot of Gold Day recruiting event, March 17.

Roberts made it clear where he stands on the Irish and their history of developing tight ends.

“I think they are Tight End U,” Roberts told Inside ND Sports. “The tight end culture at Notre Dame is something else. I just love what they do with the tight ends and their offense, and I think I fit really well.”

The 6-foot-4, 225-pound Notre Dame target is a four-star recruit and ranked by Rivals as the No. 5 tight end in the 2025 recruiting class. Roberts hauled in 33 receptions, 705 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns for Washington (Okla.) High in 2022.

Roberts said he enjoyed head coach Marcus Freeman's speech to the Irish in their team meeting Saturday morning. He also spent time learning what offensive coordinator/tight ends coach Gerad Parker expects out of the tight end in his offensive scheme.

Roberts holds 19 offers including Georgia, Miami, Michigan, Notre Dame, Oklahoma and Penn State. He plans to visit with Parker and special teams coach Marty Biagi at his school sometime this spring. He is scheduling a trip to return to Notre Dame June 4 for camp.

“After that, we're going to see how I feel about Notre Dame and just go on from there,” Roberts said. “But I definitely want to get back up to South Bend as quickly as possible I'm in love with South Bend.”
