Football Dellenger: With trick and tears, Notre Dame finally gets over hump in big-time bowl

@42Stauqs put this in the game thread, and we put this on our homepage. I think you'll want to read this Ross Dellenger column, which is tied to everything Marty Biagi has been going through.

NEW ORLEANS — The tears flowed. Marty Biagi couldn’t stop them. He tried, of course. At times, we all try to hold back our emotions but they usually get the best of us.

On Thursday night, as his Notre Dame Fighting Irish won a 12th straight game by beating Georgia to advance to the playoff semifinals, emotions got to Biagi.

And that’s perfectly fine and understandable considering the circumstances.

Biagi, Notre Dame’s special teams coordinator, has endured an inexplicable last 14 days. He became a father to a set of twins a day before the Irish’s first-round playoff win two weeks ago, lost his father the morning after that victory over Indiana, and then had a wife in the hospital until just two days ago.

Then came Thursday in the New Orleans Superdome, when Biagi’s unit accounted for three field goals, a touchdown and pulled off one of the biggest plays in the game — a fourth-quarter trickeration that duped the Georgia Bulldogs into a drive-extending penalty.

For those who know the rules

It was not the correct call. Faison may or may not have been going forward, but that was not what was called. That would be a false start. The call was illegal shift. Evans moved up to the line, but was stopped before Faison went into motion. That is all that needs to happen,. He does not have to be set for 1 sec like they would both need to be if they were in motion at the same time.
I don’t believe that is correct. All players must be set for one second prior to a player entering into motion or shifting.

12 Team CFP

Seeding teams honestly is critical. I posted in the other thread and will share here too - I think it would be fantastic to have all 12 teams play in round 1 with home games for the top 6 seeds. The top two remaining seeds get a bye in round 2. It would create a huge incentive to fight like hell during the regular season for one of the highest seeds.

Also, in general response to the topic of this thread: the expanded playoff has absolutely been a success. It caused some early season games to be less meaningful, but dozens (hundreds maybe?) of mid to late season games suddenly mattered this season where they would have been garbage time in previous years. The inclusion of legit contenders like ND and OSU is great too.
