I don't know how many years you can build your team through the portal. Fla St. was very successful last year utilizing it but you almost have to hit on every player because they're likely short term players. Adding to a solid roster built through recruiting with portal players in specific areas of need is ideal. I just don't think you can do it in large numbers year after year. Hard to establish a culture that way in my opinion.
Lane Kiffin is benefiting from the portal.

What Indiana is doing has been great for college football. The question becomes is this season for them an anomaly or the beginning of something sustainable ? I would definitely lean to the former as their roster certainly isn't built yet for the latter.

Indiana's schedule stinks
and its still considerably better than Notre Dames (edit: actually i take this back .. i just looked up their big10 schedule and they've luckily avoided any team in that conference with a pulse so far)

Also, on another note entirely, there are rumors about Marcus Freeman being poached by the NFL.

He may be a fine coach but IU is NOT going to be an annual power in the B10. 7-8 wins will be their norm.

But isn't that better than what IU normally has done? For many years they would go 2 - 2 or 3 - 1 in non-conference games and then win 1 or 2 in conference. Since 1968, IU has beaten Michigan a total of 3 times (1987, 2020,2024). The last time the Hoosiers beat Ohio State was 1988.
