The state of the ND defensive line

That's incorrect. You said we haven't recruited it well. You didn't say we haven't recruited it an elite level

I agree if you are changing it to elite. If you say we have recruited it well that's just wrong

Traore was a composite 4 star top 250 player not a 3 star. Cross was a composite 4 star player. You are giving out bad information

Young Mills Cross Rubio Traore Botelho Thomas Vernon Houstan Burnham Junior were all composite 4 stars out of high school

How many teams have 11 4 stars on their DL throughout the country. Not too many. Some hit some didn't. Some 3 stars are better than others.

But this notion we don't recruit well across the DL is just wrong
Dude, are you hear to have a discussion (it is a discussion board) or are you here to argue about arbitrary things? We are not comparing ND to Pitt… the goal is to win a title, so in comparison to the Georgias and Ohio States of the world, it’s definitely not all that well.

UGA and OSU both have 8 top 100 d linemen. ND has 2, 3 if you include Burnham (one is out for the year). OSU and UGA both have multiple 5 stars (3-4 each, maybe more… we have zero). There has always been a gap between ND and the elite of the elite when it comes to D line recruiting. This isn’t worth arguing over brother.

Why isn't MFs success netting more blue chip interest?

I noticed ND is now a 2 point underdog to UGA.

If ND had top 5 talent, instead of back end top 10 talent, they would probably be a 5 point favorite with a far higher likelihood to win this game.

I like how several of the posters in this thread understand how the talent rankings work and what they represent but are now disregarding the information/evidence and playing make believe in their heads that ND has 5 star talent on the field lol

ND has 3 & 4 star talent that has been maximized with great player development and great scheme but its the lack of high 4 & 5 star talent that is still capping this program's upside.

Imagine NDs coaching staff with OSUs roster/talent for example

OSUs roster has 14 five-stars and another 10+ top 100 prospects on it for example (that means 25 of their 80+ scholarship players are top 100 consensus talent with more than half of that being 5-star talent)

Imagine what Marcus Freeman/ this coaching staff could do with that much talent?
Only one thing to say to you...Merry Christmas please go spend time with your loved ones and make some memories.

Notre Dame Win versus Indiana (Top four pivotal plays) !!!!!

Notre Dame Nation:

I re-watched the Indiana vs. Notre Dame college football playoff game and was curious what you think was the top four pivotal plays of the game. Mine are as follows:

1. Xavier Watts - Interception
2. Jeremiyah Love - 98-yard touchdown run
3. The fake field goal attempt - Freeman punked Cignetti into calling a timeout (the smile that said - I got you) was priceless. "Cignetti eats crow for all of that smack talk!"
4. The recovery by Jordan Faison, when Mitchell Evans fumbled

Honorable Mention: Jordan Faison's 44-yard reception.

Go Irish!!!
To claim what was said in #3 is laughable.

If Tenn played in the SEC…

Maybe I'm too cynical, but I don't trust Saban on this. Remember Auburn and Cam Newton? I don't think it's any different at Alabama. The SEC did this at scale, produced academically empty degrees, paid big money, and ensured athletes could forgo academics and student life.

Again, I'll always believe they went after USC, who did it better than they could. Pete Carroll's the SEC killer. Reggie Bush can't have rims, but Newton and Auburn can be exonerated?

The bandaid has been ripped off. Like I said, the blue bloods now can openly bid and pay for players. Good luck to many SEC teams trying to outbid USC, Ohio State, Penn State, Texas, TAMU, even Notre Dame, schools with richer alumni. Alabama, Georgia, and Florida will hang, having money, not sure about the rest.

Poetic justice.
I agree and feel the way you do

The state of the ND defensive line

I have zero problem with anything written here.

Notre Dame, especially relative to the OL, doesn’t recruit the DL all that well.

Does Notre Dame do a lousy job recruiting the DL? No. It’s satisfactory to good. That’s it.

That said, ND does a damn good job developing the DL talent they do get.
They recruit the DL at a top 12 level. One of the better in the country

Your comment is inaccurate

Starters Traore, Botelho and Mills out. Cross hobbled with an ankle injury and Jason Onye, with high upside, is also out. For us to be in this spot with these losses is something to behold. Depth however is becoming a huge concern and one more injury might sink this ship.

ND hasn’t recruited the defensive line all that well, but we do have some potential. Rubio isn’t the pass rusher Mills is but is a formidable replacement. Cross and Hinish are agile but I worry about their stoutness versus the run.

I expect we continue to see a rotation at end between Burnham, Junior, Young and Oben. We are slightly undersized but experienced here and Young has potential for that game changing strip sack. This group is solid yet unspectacular. Oben has been invisible all year and I’m unsure if that is a good thing because he is playing within the system or he is just average.

Can someone please provide an update on Brennan Vernon? I thought he’d be a game wrecker by now but I’m starting to think he may be a bust based on pretty much zero buzz around him. Mukam and Sevillano are big bodies but are young and I doubt they are ready for Georgia. Mullins is still a kid and I’m not even sure we have anyone behind him?

Who are we predicting to back up Rubio? He will need rest and I worry about the drop off.

If you can't read then you would say I twisted his words.

Try reading again without being a douche

We haven’t… ND has done a solid job but has lacked getting elite talent. What they have done is develop talent. Cross, Traore and Hinish were three stars who have outperformed their recruiting ranking.

Mills, Rubio, Young and Botelho are four stars who have delivered as expected or exceeded expectations. Junior and Burnham weren’t even recruited as defensive linemen.

They have done a good, not great job. The only blue chips are Young, Rubio and Mills.

Good stuff, I agree w a lot of it.

But if evaluate a unit by how many guys have delivered as starters/impact contributors, not by how many were 4* or 5* or 3*
