And why the delay? Unless its Nick Saban why havent we heard anything?

South Florida: Charlie Strong is in Tampa today to talk with USF officials, according to 247Sports, which adds that Willie Taggart has contacted Strong about the Oregon defensive coordinator job.

Ouch!

We have been asking that for a long time now and we are no closer to knowing. Elston is the only consistent answer but he just does not strike me as a DC. He has been around the longest on BKs staff. He has done a great job as recruiting coordinator. I don't want him moving from that and I don't think you can do both jobs.

He said earlier in the week that he would start the process on Thursday after finishing off his recruiting efforts. I would hope that ND can get somebody with a higher ceiling than Coach Elston. I really liked the way Temple played defense under their DC. I want somebody with a real fire in their belly and wants to recruit too.

I wish I could remember the list of 5 names from an article that discussed this. Strong's name was in there, Elston, I think a DC from Wake Forest, I think one from Oklahoma ..

Since Kelly stated that the DC will have more control on who he hires and recruits, signs appear that Kelly will be going outside to look.

Venables leaving Clemson for ND? Hahahaha we could only dream. Clemson is an easier job, with just as much upside and they'learned compensate him plenty to stay.

Love your thinking man, but I highly doubt it. After being the DC at Oklahoma and Clemson, my guess is that Venables' next job is as someone's HC.

Mike Elko would be a great hire from Wake Forest. Dave Arranda from LSU would be a homerun, but I highly doubt ND will give him substantial enough raise and a guaranteed contract unattached to Brian Kelly to steal him away. Jimmy Lake from Washington would be another good hire, but again, ND would have to pony up some cash to have him leave his current situation. Bob Shoop is a good one at Tennessee. Not sure he'd leave the SEC for ND though. Phil Parker at Iowa isn't a sexy name, but like Elko, his defenses are quietly productive... A lot of names out there.

Aranda just signed a three year deal/extension at LSU.

Kelso, I think that article had Strong and Wilcox from Wisconsin and Snow from Temple and Pelini and the Washington Defensive coordinator among a few others. What intrigued me was the reference to Wisconsin being known for underpaying their coordinators and assistants, and the suggestion that Wilcox might be recruitable.

Wilcox is the Homerun thats out there. Strong may go to USF. If Kelly wants to keep his job and coach at ND beyond 2017. That is the hire that could seriously erase his offensive flaws. Everywhere he's been his defenses have been tough!

Elko is another that i like, but Wilcox is young and has ties to the SEC and the west coast. Kelly needs to throw the bank at him! The $ is not an issue according to the report. BVG was the highest paid assistant outside of the SEC so....

Go get em!

Where is this article? I have a very hard time believing that BVG was the highest paid non-Sec assistant.

I'm not going to post every article i find, just to appease every poster. It came across my news feed on FB from 24/7. In all honesty rather than question my post perhaps you could do some digging? I also posted a thread that states as much if you care to search?

Damn man I was just asking about the article. Saying you saw it on 247 would have been enough. Be a little more mad on the Internet

I think the article said BVG was the 9th highest paid DC PERIOD. Don't remember the reference to the SEC but that doesn't' mean it wasn't stated. The article was on front page of this website, but probably restricted to paid subscribers.

you have to recruit studs on defense .. it's that simple. upfront ND is a POS at DE . They bring nothing as pass rushers. this coaching staff is a fraud in recruiting / player development. DC ? They need a HC that can recruit more than WR's . BVG did not recruit that useless coach should have been fired 2 years ago case closed... BK waited way too long... close the book on this staff once and for all. why not hire the North Dakota state staff ... 5 time champions ? bet div 1 teams over and over .... no mention of this staff to fix the ND mess? I don't want to hear it is FBS ... BK claim started at grand valley state . He just name d players like Kizer and Mcglinchey as captains lol...they may go pro .. sounds like a desperate plea for them to return. Fire this guy.

Great post here! Kelly will screw up the hire just like he did with BVG. Kelly is a bore and a lame coach. Can you imagine him saying that "he"ll take care of Jimmy Johnson in a fight" like Lou said to the team before the Miami game? Not a chance. Kelly's a lame duck coach and anyone who thinks otherwise is kidding themselves. Hire the entire ND State staff. Same initials and better than this train wreck.

I see what you mean about Justin Wilcox. Here's his profile:

Tex -- THANKS! That was it.

Lou could say anything he wanted to, but as for reality what difference did that make? As if he really wanted to fight Jimmy Johnson?

If the ND State staff was really that good, don't you think some other big-time program would have hired them by now?

By the time we are finished, we may end up with Joe Kines or Joe Lee Dunn.

He was the 9th highest paid assistant in the country, and the highest paid ones are almost always in the SEC, so it's very believable.

Of course he didn't want to fight Jimmy but it was a motivational ploy that worked and let the team know he was in their corner.

Wilcox was terrible at SC but has been great everywhere else. Will T, of course is the new Oregon coach so take him off the list.

I know that, but the poster whom I was responding to made it sound as though Lou was some sort of tough guy that Kelly isn't.

Well Strong is out but most of us expected that.

What do folks here think about Phil Snow? He is 60. He has a ton of DC experience. Coached LBs in the pros and mostly DBs in college. His HC just went to Waco Texas and he may not want to go although Ruhle was a protege of his once besides being his HC.

He might want to stay in the Midwest/Rust belt area. He was the DC at Eastern Michigan before Temple I believe. His skill set and experience would be perfect.

not juvenile at all. It's reality . Van Gorder did not recruit well and new DC has his hands full. Is my comment too harsh for you ? The defense has been a mess way too long . BK needed to make a change 2 years ago. That is not the truth ? Who is BK going to hire ? Does any really good DC want tong that BK may be on his way out ? Either the players are not good or the coaching staff has done a poor job in player development. That is a fact. I use the ND state staff as an example of a solid together that has won big. So my point is instead of having BK try to find a savior on the defense why not just start fresh with a new HC ? What is so wrong with my opinion?

Ndcap. The only thing wrong with your quote is it's the truth and many of these posters don't know enough about football to know better. Their defense of a lost cause is a true head scratcher.

Yeah I read the article. I still don't know how its more believable. ND is not known for paying its assistants at a top tier level, at least they used not to be known for doing that. Surprised he got paid that much without a pedigree as a top level DC.

It comes down to what the competition is. He had a good stint at UGA as DC, not so good at Auburn. But he was also an NFL vet, so you had to contend with that competition too. IMHO, he belongs in the NFL. He doesn't really like to recruit, and he needs more than 20 hours a week to get his defense mastered.
